ROSS' SUPERMAN & AQUAMAN FIND NEW WORK

It’s widely known that Alex Ross uses real people as the models for the characters he paints. This year has proven to be an outstanding one for two of his main models. Frank Kasy, who has been Alex’s model for Superman since the very beginning, may not have been cast in Bryan Singer’s new movie, but he is starring in another film shooting this year. Dog Jack is the story of an escaped slave who finds aid from a Northern minister, played by Kasy. Kasy is a talented artist who met Ross when they both worked at the Leo Burnett advertising agency. Kasy has done the storyboards for Dog Jack as well as other feature films and television advertisements.

The year also marked the premiere on the Biography Channel of Dead Famous, a show that follows a “sensitive” as he searches for the spirits of celebrities now deceased. The star of the show is Chris Fleming, who has been Alex’s Aquaman model for five years. Dead Famous airs Tuesday nights at 10:00 ET.

“I just thought it was interesting,” said Ross, “that two guys I asked to be models, strictly based upon their appearance, have been finding mainstream success in entertainment.”

Hey Alex Ross, dont sound too full of yourself now.
"“I just thought it was interesting,” said Ross, “that two guys I asked to be models, strictly based upon their appearance, have been finding mainstream success in entertainment.”

This guy is an incredible artist but every time he opens his mouth i hate him. He's a jerk and he's way too full of himself. I guess he can be though.

What? He thinks it's interesting that two guys he asked to be models strictly based on their appearance also has other skills and are in demand enough to find mainstream succes. He's not saying it's because of him, he's not even implying it. In fact, the only thing he says about himself is that he thinks it's interesting, how on earth is that being "full of himself"?

ross is full of himself and you can argue that he should be he has talent. But his work is always been stiff, using models is great and can help you capture a dynamic you can't get without it. But when it comes down to doing seq. art models aren't always the best idea if you look at the new justice book and compared it to his own seq work you can see how bad he is as a seq. artist. What makes justice great is not only his painting talents but the fact that a real seq artist did the drawing and he is only painting over it.

In entertainment right now, it seems to me that a little comic book credential somewhere is hip. If that's true, its a good season for hollywood types to get involved and its also a very good season in entertainment for those already involved in comics.

It wouldn't, if this wasn't isolated. I remember an interview about his paintings for the beginning of Spider-Man 2. He refused to paint the eyes how they appeared in the movie, because they were not like Romita's, and intimated the costume wasn't true to the classic version. He didn't feel this loyalty to the classic version for HIS OWN unused treatment of the costume for the original movie, which was much more different from Romita's than the one actually used. Apparently only he can redesign iconic characters.

Actually, he was asked by the production crew (Raimi, etc) to redesign the Spider costume because at first, they didn't think that the original would work onscreen.

And David T is right. Ross may be a jerk, but nothing he says in the interview comes across as Ross being "full of himself."

i hope this means that he'll get a new Superman model. while i didn't mind in Kingdom Come since it was set in the future, Ross has a tendency to make many of his characters look like chubby people with no muscle tone who're pushing at least 50 years old. his Superman is a prime example of this. everytime he depicts a hero standing there with his chest puffed out, it looks like he's wearing a girdle that's about to pop and expose a fat belly.

Ross only uses models as references to get the pose and lighting correct. The body types and faces Ross comes up with mostly on his own.

hey man, just because Alex Ross has a man-crush on Adam West since childhood is no reason to knock the guy's art like that!

i thought for a second you were ACTUALLY asking for an Aquaman movie to be made!

(full disclosure: i am making fun of Aquaman and jumping on the bandwagon to keep my cool-geek-cred intact, 'cause i'm totally a closet-Aquaman-fan. and if any of you bastards ever bring this up again, i'll deny it )
