SONIC X #1

Archie Comic has provided Newsarama with a preview of Sonic X #1, due in stores September 7th.

From Archie’s original announcement of the series:

SONIC’S most recent success, the hit television series SONIC X (which consistently scores #1 in its time slot) has had SONIC fans demanding even more monthly action, adventure and romance from the "Blur Blur" and friends. ARCHIE is X-cited to announce a monthly new SONIC X mini-series, doubling the dose of monthly SONIC comic fun! And kicking off the first of what looks to be several great new projects with SONIC and
SONIC X!

SONIC speedsters are salivating for the stupendous new SONIC X four issue mini-series! All new stories based on the storylines from the hit Saturday morning cartoon SONIC X and featuring all the most popular characters; SONIC along with KNUCKLES, TAILS, AMY, CREAM and CHEESE, ROUGE, CHRIS, TOPAZ and even an appearance by the mysterious SHADOW as well as many more. Things go to the X-treme when SONIC and friends are transplanted and trapped on Earth. With the diabolical DR EGGMAN planning to conquer the planet with his maniacal mechanical robot menaces! Our heroes set off to protect the Earth from EGGMAN and find a way back to their home world.

SONIC X starts off with a boom! When an evil plot by EGGMAN, with sidekicks DECOE and BOCOE putt hundreds in danger attempting to empty the bank vault of all its cash, DR. EGGMAN hopes to gain more bucks for bigger, badder ‘bots! Trapped in the bank are SONIC's friend Chris and his family! Only SONIC can save the day with help from KNUCKLES, AMY, CHEESE AND TAILS! Things go from bad to worse when a strange energy is threatening the entire seaboard, is it a Chaos Emerald? Or is it something much more dangerous? Worst of all the mystery is at the bottom of the ocean, and SONIC canąt swim!

SONIC X is written by Joe Edkin, who is familiar with fun and speed with popular writing stints on Scooby Doo, and cartoon line and resident speedster from the Avengers and X-Men, Quicksilver. Man, Archie really hung onto this license...I remember picking Sonic books up back in the day when I used to get my Archie TMNT books...and from recent flip-throughs of their current Sonic stuff, they seem to have built a pretty nice universe for them.

I never knock Archie stuff. I may not read them anymore, but they got me to where I am today as a comic fan.

Can anybody tell me when Dr Robotnick changed his name to Dr Eggman? When I was a kid Sonic the Hedgehog games, cartoons and comics were my life, but as I grew older obviously I grew out of it. So when did this change happen?

Pretty much all of Archie's (non-digest) comics are $2.25, I think. They're great values.

I don't really like the Archie house style, but I love Sabrina the Teenage Witch, and the fact that it's so cheap just makes it *certain* that I pick it up every month. ^_^

Eggman was his original name in Japan. In the West we like to mess everything up and change the name of things like Eggman to Robotnik.

Like how M. Bison in Street Fighter is actually the called Vega in Japan. They were afraid Mike Tyson would sue for a boxer named M.(Mike) Bison.

I think name switch is something like this.

Balrog > M. Bison
M. Bison> Vega
Vega> Sagat
Sagat> Balrog

Any adults who like Sonic? I hear all this "That looks great.... for my kid" stuff, but anyone here actually buy sonic for themselves?

I mean if it was any other property I'd probably buy it, I just was never a fan of Sonic. I was more of a Nintendo guy.

If there was a Super Mario comic coming out monthly I'd totally be buying it for myself. Or if they continued the Archie TMNT series.

It actually went like this:

M. Bison was renamed Balrog
Balrog was renamed Vega
Sagat stayed Sagat
Vega was renamed M. Bison

How come they haven't done a crossover between Sonic and Speed Racer yet? That's something I'd like to see...

Sonic has the most convulted continuity out of any comic I've seen on the market. I swear, it's easier to be a new reader and get into X-Men than Sonic. They've managed to create their own continuity for 10+ years, and incorporate all the different games' continuities and characters into it, in a manner that makes it very hard for new readers to pick up. My little brother loves Sonic, but he found it hard to get into the comic.

I'll try again with Sonic X for him, but the main title is impossible to get into. I'm not exxaggerating.

Here and there, usually for no particular reason. Now, if there was one of Link and Zelda, that'd be on my standing order.

They did, but it was just way too fast for anyone to see.

I'm looking forward to Sonic X comic. I been reading the regular sonic comic and all it's spinoffs since the start. Weird thing is to my knoledge the anime in japan only had 50 plus episodes that ran up to what aired on fox box this past season. So where does come from? Did 4kids order some new ones from the company that made the first two seasons? Airing episodes never aired in japan or here? Maybe I missed something along the way but I never heard anything on it. Here is another thing but I could have sworn they announced that the Sonic X comic is now ongoing.

Yep. 22 years old here, and Sonic was THE book that got me into comics at age 10. For some, it was Spider-Man, or X-Men, or whatever; for me, it was Sonic. And as such, I stil read it to this day, even though there was a 2-4 year period when the book was mediocre at absolute best (or on many occasions was the worst thing I'd ever bought).

But perservereance paid off - (if you ask me) the past 2 years have been the absolute best in the book's 151 issue run. As for this, hell yeah I'll give it a shot - but considering how grating the cartoon can be a lot of the time (and not just due to the translations and dubbing, either), I do have some trepidation about it.

(No, I'm not a dirty 'furry'.)

I have nothing with Sonic myself otherwise I wouldn't have any problems picking it up regardless if it's a kiddy book or not. I've had Scooby Doo on my pull list for a long time and still think about picking up the title again.

I collect Sonic, though I had to take about a year or two off for financial reasons, but it's been a mainstay since I was a kid. I'll definitely be getting this one.

Personally, I don't think it's as bad as everyone makes it out to be, though there are some odd bits here and there sometimes that are questionable, but no more than other books, I'm sure.

Supermutant> Not sure I understand your question, but if it's what I think it is, the answer is that for some unexplained reason, France got a third season of Sonic X before Japan or the US, and as I hear it, the US gets it this fall on 4Kids.tv.

As for the comic, it's not related to the other Sonic comic at all, save for maybe in the parallel universe sort of way(time will tell if they ever pull that card out of their deck or not). "Ultimate Sonic," I guess might be an apt term, except this one's not a full-bore reboot, as it's actually tied into the TV show, taking place around various episodes.

This looks pretty good so far, cute use of one of the lyrics in the second page. Art looks a little off to me somehow for some reason... it almost evokes a kids' storybook kind of look to me, as compared to the normal style of art, if you know what I mean.

And I love the cover m'man Spaz whipped up for #1, I had to look for his sig to make sure it wasn't a screencap. That guy can do any picture based on a property justice, he makes it look like it's from the original artists. Not a bad thing when handling others' property, IMO.

Story looks amusing so far. A little hard to believe that they don't have money on their parallel Earth, but I like where this is going.

What I meant was that I had never heard of another season and to my knoledge the series ended in japan after second season.
