GOYER TO WRITE, DIRECT, PRODUCE FLASH MOVIE
Writer, director, and now producer David Goyer isn’t giving up Hollywood versions of superheroes anytime soon. According to variety, the writer/director of Blade: Trinity and writer of Batman Begins will next write, produce, and direct a feature film version of DC’s Flash for Warner Brothers.
While Wally West is the current (and third generation) Flash in DC’s ongoing Flash series (written by Geoff Johns, with art by Howard Porter), the film version will reportedly play a little more with the original version of the character which debuted in 1939. According to reports, the film version will be Jason Peter “Jay” Garrick, who will be in college when he gains his powers. Although – with that, the usual cautions of those outside comics writing about comics apply – that name and version of “Flash” may be the first the Variety writer found.
Goyer is quoted in the trade as saying: "'Flash' is my favorite of the properties. I think the character of the Flash, who moves faster than the speed of light, opens itself up to rich cinematic and story ideas."
The film version of Flash will be the latest other media adaptation of the character, as he can currently be seen in Cartoon Network’s Justice League animated series. Also, and perhaps a little better more forgotten, the character had his own short-lived television series from 1990-1991, starring John Wesley Ship as Barry Allen.

I loved the TV show! Mark Hamil as the Trickster. When I fist saw the headline I wondered if it was going to be Barry or Wally, didn't put Jay into the equation. Love the Flash and think G. Johns (or even M. Waid) should be the "technical advisor" So many great rouges to bring to the screen!!! I have been impressed with the BM:Begins trailer.

I Loved that Series, thought it was hilarious when he ran from his dog, and started to have this eating frenzies.
Hope this movie will be a hit to, but I gotta ask, whatta 'bout costume? Me thinks that what comic-Jay has, is kinda towards the non-costume trend. But still flashy. (No pun...)

One of my favorite episodes of the old Flash TV series was the one where he got a cold. Great, ahead of its time stuff and looking forward to the movie. At this point, I don't think anything can disappoint as much as Catwoman. As long as they at least stay true to the roots of the comic even SLIGHTLY, it will be at least decent. As long as Warner Bros. gives it a budget, ya know. I mean, had Daredevil been given a decent budget it would have had been so much better, look at the Elektra trailers.

Hmmmm...Not quite sure if I like this or not. I think it would be neat to see Flash on the big screen, but with them using some obscure character no one knows about I don't like that. Stay true as possible to the comic please.
These announcements of comic book movies is getting a little tiresome lately. Namor? Magneto? Flash? Iron Man? Just too many movies. The public is going to get really bored with these coming out every year. Take a page from "Who Wants To Be A Millionaire", you stretch it too thin and people will resent it.
Just my 1 and half cents.

It's cool that they are using the cartoon character as a template. At least this way, there won't be yet another manifestation of a comic character that does not correspond to any preceding incarnations (such as the X-Men franchise, Catwoman, etc). People that were not initially comic fans should be able to pick up a comic or watch the show after seeing the movie and recognize it. Of course it would be great for us to make a comic movie true to the comic, but that just doesn't look like it'll ever happen.
I will at least settle for something that brings in new fans.

I'm both elated and disappointed at the same time...
On the one hand, I'm pleased that the Flash is finally getting a shot at the big-screen. With the recent advances in special effects and the growing comic book film genre, going ahead with a FLASH movie seems like a no-brainer.
However, was it really necessary to dump current Flash Wally West in favor of Jay? I'm a huge Jay fan, but tend to associate him with the WW II era and as an older character with the current JSA. Revamping Jay as a young man in 2005 and putting him in some movie version of Wally's costume (provided there is a costume), is going to seem extremely bizarre.
Also, how is this going to affect THE FLASH comic series? If the movie does extremely well, will DC kill off Wally and replace him with a revitalized Jay? And what about JUSTICE LEAGUE UNLIMITED? The various toys and tie-in items show the Flash as Wally West, which has also been confirmed on the animated series.
Obviously, it's not the end of the world here...well, unless David Goyer picks Adam Sandler to play Jay or writes some clunky plotting and dialogue similar to BLADE: TRINITY. Here's hoping Geoff Johns is on Goyer's speed-dial...

Goyer is a fine writer, but as director? Well, let's just say that the vampires weren't the only thing that sucked in Blade Trinity. It may not be fair to judge a director on the one and only film he has done, but if Blade III is any indication, I'm not expecting too much.

I knew this one was coming. Don't know much about Flash do we? Anyway, smart move on Goyer's part finding a clever way to get around the inevitable Barry/Wally argument as to who should be on the big screen. Then again, some people need to do some research....

Jay Garrick (hmmm)
While I love the original I really am not sure that that's the way to go. Considering there's already been some rumor that Ryan Reynolds is Goyer's favorite to play in particular the character of Wally West (and I think that's a pretty good fit, IMO). So, definitely not sold on Variety's report, too soon to tell.

Well, with this announcement only having just been made in today's Variety, it's refreshing to see that some people have already decided that it'll be lousy.

Well he is obscure to me. Sorry I can't read and know everything on every character.
I apologize oh mighty one. If you could please deliver my 20 lashes after dinner as I would like to wince in pain on a full stomach.

No offense, but you knew felt well informed enough to bash the decision to use Jay Garrick as the Flash. Jay Garrick IS the Flash, the FIRST Flash and I can't think of a good enough argument as to who deserves to be on the big screen more than the ORIGINAL. Another way to look at it is, the general public doesn't know either, so who CARES what the big screen Flash's name is?

CATWOMAN gets 4 stars out of 5 (same as SPIDERMAN 2) in FILM REVIEW SPECIAL this month. This special edition reviews all major motion pictures of 2004. CATWOMAN is praised, among other things, for its cinematography and Halle Berry's impersonation of the character. For those who do not know FILM REVIEW, it is one of the most venerable movie magazines worldwide( published in the UK). BLADE3 and THE PUNISHER only got 3 stars out of 5. Plus, DAREDEVIL had a budget of $80m and still it sucked! And what's so special about the ELEKTRA footage anyway? Looks like they tried to save a buck to me!

If you re-read my post I didn't bash the decision. In fact I said it would be neat. To me, I would rather see a character in the film I know. You are right the general public doesn't know about the character either but as someone else pointed out which will help comics more, the original character that isn't around anymore or the one that is still in the comics? I realize that it probably won't help anyone get into comics but for the .01% that it does they may get confused when they go to the comic shop and pick up Flash and it is nothing like the movie.

As far as I'm concerned, any reviewer who gave Catwoman 4 out of 5 stars should have their press pass revoked. This is the only positive review of the movie that I have heard about. I'm afraid one good review isn't going to sway anyone's opinion. It's like the toothpaste commercials where they say that Crest is recommended by 4 out of 5 dentists. No one really cares what the fifth dentist had to say about the product.

Jay is still around, only old...
Smallville had Bart Allen, so name won't be that important
Just pray that Stan Lee's version is not considered. That was lame

If this follows in the footsteps of WB's recent hero movie adaptions, this will SUCK. BAD. Superman 4 bad. Jim Carrey Riddler bad. Hallie Berry bad.

Let's hope it will be better than Blade Trinity.
For Jay Garrick I'm not sure it's a good idea, why not use the actual Flash. At least I hope they will use the actual costume, and not the original one...
