MEET THE [new] NEW AVENGERS: DAY 6...and 7

While you were probably expecting the sixth of our eight daily profiles of the new New Avengers roster (as of next month’s New Avengers #27), we’re going to throw you a curveball today and give you two – numbers six and seven, including a brand new member and a returning one.

The reason for the double-reveal will become apparent with the first words out of writer Brian Bendis’ mouth….

WHO: Iron Fist (a.k.a. Danny Rand)

WHAT BRIAN BENDIS SAYS: “I'm glad we've put them together as a reveal because...Yes, the ‘Heroes for Hire’ [see below] are back together again. Danny went through a lot during Civil War. He’s got his Rand Corporation and we’re discovering a lot about him in his series by Ed [Brubaker] and Matt [Fraction], and this is the book where you get to see that information effecting the Marvel heroes in his life. This is a really good time to be an Iron Fist fan and a ‘Power Man & Iron Fist’ fan. They are going to achieve a lot in the coming months.

“What I like about the two of them is that they’re best friends but they haven’t been around one another a lot lately, but now they’re back together again. So they have a very mature relationship. They’re both real warriors at heart that have been through a lot together. So having them back together on this team is, I think, very special for us old school fans.

“And it also helps establish the more familial aspect of the team. There is no charter or official reason for them to be together, but they need each other. They’re all with one another because they have to be. There is no one else they can trust. They’re thrown together by fate to be in the Avengers, and now they’re being thrown together again to be in the Avengers post-Civil War.

"Plus, Iron Fist has some interesting backstory with the mysticism and magics of K'un-Lun, which can and will run in direct conflict with Doctor Strange and his magics."

WHO: Luke Cage (a.k.a. Power Man)

WHAT BRIAN BENDIS SAYS: “Luke Cage will now rise to be the leader of the team. He almost had a …hmmm, let’s says a ‘King Arthur’ heaviness in him in New Avengers #22, where he made decisions to fight for what he believes in no matter what the cost to himself or his family. And now here he is having survived the war and kind of being put in position to lead the team to where it needs to go. He is, of all of them, the biggest believer in that what happened to the New Avengers in the first arcs – in the Savage Land, discovering there is something rotten in S.H.I.E.L.D. – is all connected, all the way from House of M, to the Secret Wars, to Civil War … that there has been something pulling at them this whole time, and they’re going to get right back to trying to figure out what it all is and putting it all together.

"There is something so interesting about an unbreakable man who now has such a weakness in having a wife and child that he cares so much for. Jessica can take care of herself, but that little baby ... that poor little baby.

"Plus his relationship with Jessica becomes a real point of pride and angst as their lives as rebels continue."

Thursday features our final of eight profiles of characters from the new New Avengers roster, But not to be cheated out of a day, Friday will feature a special wrap-up on the team in general and feature a few reveals of its own...

Meet the [new] New Avengers: Day 5 – Spider-Woman

Meet the [new] New Avengers: Day 4 – Wolverine

Meet the [new] New Avengers: Day 3 – Doctor Strange

Meet the [new] New Avengers: Day 2 – Ronin

Meet the [new] New Avengers: Day 1 – Echo

Cool, two in one and both of these please me. I'm expecting that the last is Spider-man, then Strange is the surprise and that should really have been saved until last I think.

I was going to do this anyway tomorrow night (really), but I'm going to name my surprise character as Iron Fist giving me...

4 out of 7 Avengers that I called. Pretty respectable I say.

My prediction:
Echo
Spider-man
Captain America
Luke Cage
Falcon
Hercules
Spider-woman
Surprise character = Iron Fist

Confirmed line-up:
Echo
Ronin
Doctor Strange
Wolverine
Spider-woman
Iron Fist
Luke Cage

I love this new line-up. With MIGHTY AVENGERS, Bendis can really fashion a new and unique team over in NEW. Should be a lot of fun.

AWESOME lineup so far!

I bet this whole thing will probably make it sell EVEN BETTER than it already was.

Definitely a fantastic book that deserves all the success it's had for two kickass years!

NICE! But i cant help but feel "street level" will be brought up by haters. I think this will be a very interesting team dynamic.

Luke Cage as leader? Bad-ass

There's something wrong when the "Heroes for Hire" book lacks Cage & Iron Fist, and Avengers has them. What's next, Silver Surfer, Hulk, and Namor joining Doc Strange on NA, then a new Defenders book coming out without them?

And Cage is made the leader because he played the race card so insipidly in his CW crossover issue. Least that confirms Cap's gonna be the one "dying" (if I see one more post on Newsarama spelling it "dyeing" or "dieing", I swear I'm gonna start tossing out Buckys) and returning in the role of Ronin.

Wow so I guess it's either Captain America or Spider-Man.
But Spider-Man quit the team so it's down to Captain American or Hercules or a new member.

I really hope its Hercules since he got major attention in Civil War.
No, it can't be Captain America since Cage is the leader now.

ummm... ohhkay...

I really was hoping for a good lineup, I'm glad to see Cage here, but not feeling the rest... I am assuming then, that Spider-man is not on the team... Oh well...

I am gonna assume that Ronin is Cap, Spider-man is not on the team, and there will be at least one more mutant.

I don't know which AVengers title has me excited...they seem kinda, I dunno....

yawn

That's the biggest lie to cover up that Ronin is Cap!

I love the 70's!

Hmmm...interesting...

I've hated New Avengers previously, but I'm curious to see where this goes.

Awesome lineup. Very cool. Both this and Mighty Avengers look like a lot of fun.

Two assumptions...anti-reg's lose the war based on the preview of Luke getting shot at while trying to buy milk, and the Rand Corporation will be secretly funding the New Avengers, thus replacing the need for Stark.

Yah!!!! Two good choices. Nice to see the original HFH together.

Wait, I'm being forced to change my opinion.

This is terrible, they are not real Avengers. They are not classic Avengers. We demand the originals or nothing else. All hail the ORIGINAL Avengers. Thor, Ant-man, Wasp, Hulk, Iron-man... Everything else is an insult to the Original, Classic, Never to be changed Avengers.

Thank you

just my opinion but Cage isn't fun any more. i miss the old Cage. i wish that the old Cage had been an Avenger a while before becoming Bendis' new golden boy. i hate this new character.
