WEB OF CEBULSKI & YOUNG: SPIDER-CLAN RETURNS THIS MONTH

by Benjamin Ong Pang Kean

The Mangaverse version of Spider-Man first appeared in the Marvel Mangaverse: Spider-Man one-shot in 2002. However, unlike Mangaverse X-Men, this version of Spider-Man was consistent in the spin-off five-issue limited series by Kaare Andrews, Skottie Young and Khary Randolph later that same year.

C.B. Cebulski, then editor of the mini-series, re-teams with Young for the next web-tingling adventure of this version of Spidey in this month’s Spider-Man Family Featuring Spider-Clan #1.

Newsarama.com spoke with both writer and artist for their views on Marvel Mangaverse and Spider-Clan...

Whoa, that is some amazing artwork. Scottie Young's style has really evolved. I'm just a huge fan of exaggerrated art.

In my opinion, Skottie Young has one of the most dynamic and energetic styles in the in the biz. His work just breathes energy. Some may complain about his style being too manga-esque but it works. And to top it off with those great colors...this book is as good as bought.

In that shot of the villian analogues...who's the character in the front?

young is just an incredible artist - i can't see why more people aren't into this guy's stuff. his form and action are so dynamic. his art, along with guys like keron grant and kaare andrews, i think will end up having amazing longevity.

Thumbs up

I don't always like Skottie's art (mainly because I don't think it fits the story or characters) but here it's perfect. He's showing what he can really do and I love it.

Too bad the Spider-Clan story isn't available seperately, as I'm not interested in the re-prints at all and am not too keen about the high price point ;(

These are good stories but at the store I work at we couldn't even give them away. I feel bad but it seems comic fans are always willing to give manga stuff a shot but manga/anime people will not go near the comics in out shop with a ten foot pole. they don't even like the American Tokyopop stuff. I grew up with both and tome there is no difference but I cannot seem o breach the walls the younger fans have put up. The original mangaverse was great but I would show it to kids and they just turned up their collective noses to it. Can anyone suggest a really good way to cross-pollenate this book to non-comic anime fans?

Skottie really knocked this one out the park. Seeing homeboy evolve over the years has been amazing.

Skottie is a great talent.

The only thing stopping him from blowing up is probably the titles he is put on. I love his Marvel work and wish Marvel put him on a title like Livewires or Nextwave. Seriously, where do I have to go to beg Ellis for a Young collaboration on Nextwave?
