MARVEL ZOMBIES PREQUEL & SEQUEL IN THE WORKS

As briefly mentioned in the news about Marvel and Dynamite’s upcoming Marvel Zombies Vs. The Army of Darkness five-issue limited series, the Marvel zombie-verse is also returning in a May 2007 one-shot by Marvel reuniting the original Marvel Zombies creative team of Robert Kirkman, Sean Phillips, June Chung, and Arthur Suydam.

Entitled Marvel Zombies: Dead Days, according to Kirkman the prequel one-shot, “is like a Marvel event series in 48 pages.”

“It leads right up to the Ultimate Fantastic Four arc that [Mark] Millar and [Greg] Land did that introduces the zombies,” Kirkman explained. “It shows how everything (or a lot of things) went down …who turned who into zombies and how.”

“This prequel occurs concurrently with the Army of Darkness limited series,” the writer continued. “You'll see characters do something in Zombies Vs. AoD that shows how and why they're doing something in the prequel. Both can be read separately with no confusion... but if you read both you'll see how She-Hulk got to the Baxter Building instead of her just showing up - and you'll see Spider-Man go on an adventure with Ash shortly before getting turned into a zombie instead of just seeing him turned into a zombie.

“My prequel starts with Spider-Man swinging at you - bitten. I really jump in with both feet. In Marvel Zombies Vs. Army of Darkness you see Spider-Man bitten. It's things like that.

For those keeping score at home, the official sequence of events goes:

Marvel Zombies Vs. The Army of Darkness & Marvel Zombies: Dead Days (concurrent)

Ultimate Fantastic Four (introduces the Marvel Zombies and explains why the Zombie FF doesn’t appear in the limited series).

Marvel Zombies limited series.

Kirkman also revealed to Newsarama that a full-on “Marvel Zombies 2” sequel limited series is still going to happen. Kirkman expects a launch later in 2007 while they wait for Phillips to find time to illustrate as he’s currently drawing “the excellent Criminal series at ICON.”

“I've already started writing it and it's going to be crazier and grander than the first mini,” the writer exclaimed. “It takes place on a larger scope and it's going to bring in some of Marvel's best space characters that didn't appear in the first mini. Thanos, Gladiator, and others appear - but it's not a cosmic story…

“Figure that one out!”

Talk about milking an idea out... I liked the series, but, is it me or is this Zombie stuff getting a tad old??

Ironically enough, I think this is becoming overkill. Is the demand really there for sequels and prequels to what was a pretty one-note story in the first place? It's reminiscent of what happened with 1602: a well-received and popular miniseries that spawned inferior spin-offs that were made only with $$$ in mind.

whats that sound?

It sounds like my Marvel Zombies #1 first print slowly going up in value...

Lets hope that when this sequel comes out, people arent burned out on zombies.

Personally the only ones I read are ones written by Kirkman... and I just wasnt a big fan of zombies until i read Walking Dead and Marvel ZOmbies

If milking something is giving the public what they want, then I'm all for it. Everybody at my store wanted more when it was done. Making the consumer happy is what it's all about. If you don't like it, don't get it. But there's plenty of people who love it and want more, more, more.

ditto!

ANd for those of you bitching about how the zombie genre has been milked to death, are you new to comics? What idea in comics HASN'T been milked to death, when seen as a huge success?!? Either buy it or don't buy it, no one is putting a gun to your head either way...

I feel the opposite, zombies are something I never get tired of i guess. And honestly as many superhero books as there are dominating the shelf the last thing we can claim is over-saturation of anything else.

More zombie books sounds good. It was a fun series, so more of it isn't a bad idea.

Prequels, though, sound a little convoluted. We already know where the stories are going to end, so it's hard to think that those stories will have a lot of impact. Multiple prequels sounds even more convoluted.

I hope it works out.

Oh yeah, I'm totally ready for this stuff. I just read the Marvel Zombies hardcover and it was really one of the best things I've read in a long time.

One question though is that Marvel Apes thing going to happen, or was that just a joke by Quesada? Becaus I really liked that idea and think that it'd be a very funny book.

I mean, it's not like there are literally hundreds of super hero titles on the racks or anything.

Oh, wait.

But five zombie books is apparently all the genre can take.

the difference here is that Kirkman wrote Marvel Zombies, is going to write the zombie prequel, and is going to write the zombie sequel (as well as being creative consultant on the AOD/MZ crossover)

1602 was written by Neal Gaiman. The rest weren't.

So, it's not really reminiscent of what happened with 1602.

To me, complaining about the oversaturation of the zombie genre is like compliaining about the oversaturation of the superhero genre. Both have valid arguments, but in the end, like with any idea, if there is something new and fresh about it, I'm not going to complain.

I really dig The Walking Dead because its more of a character driven story with zombies than a zombie driven story with characters. I dig Shaun of the Dead because it looks at zombie through the veil of a romantic comedy. Romero's films are great because he takes the zombie formula and changes the locales and situations. 28 Days Later took zombie cinemetography to a new level. The Raimi Evil Dead films put fun first and zombies second. Marvel Zombies was great because it added the superhero element (among other reasons).

Oversaturation only becomes a problem when it begins to cut of the creative flow and we get nothing but re-hash.

I'm really looking forward to the prequels and sequels and crossovers for Marvel Zombies. If nothing else, its nice to see someone really flesh out the world of a zombie apocalypse. Plus, its just plain fun. I just hope that Marvel is smart enough to release a Marvel Zombies vs. Ultimate Fantastic Four trade as a companion to these new stories.
