BALTIMORE 06: DC - ONE YEAR GREATER

Wrapping up the portion of the Saturday programming, DCU Executive Editor Dan Didio played host to a full room for the “DC: One Year Greater” panel at Baltimore Comic-Con. Panelists for the presentation included: Marv Wolfman, George Perez, Bill Willingham, JG Jones, Mark Waid, Barry Kitson, Bb Wayne, and Jann Jones.

Wanted to move quickly to the question and answer portion, Didio only briefly recapped major highlights of the past year from DC, and immediately opened the floor to questions. (Newsarama Note: as with all DC panels, this one was irreverent, fast-paced, and funny. While the actual quotes of the panelists may not have been captured, their intent has been)

Q: Future plans for Aquaman?

Busiek: Every issue gets better. The setup for Aquaman is hopefully something that will read like a big, sprawling fantasy novel. This is not six issues and everything returns to normal, and it will never fully return to what it was before, but that’s not saying that what you want to see happen won’t happen.

Q: How long will the Dweller of the Deep’s identity be a mystery?

Busiek: I thought we answered it in the first issue – the last panel where we showed that he had a water hand was a giveaway. In the next two issues, anyone who didn’t get it will realize that the previous Aquaman is the Dweller. It’s not meant to be a mystery to the readers, but it is to the characters.

Q: Wonder Woman has never appeared in Batman or Detective can you fix that?

Waid: Like Paul Dini wouldn’t kill to write Wonder Woman and Poison Ivy together.

Q: Will there be a collection of JG Jones’ 52 covers?

Didio pooled the audience, which responded enthusiastically. Didio said that DC is looking into it very seriously as an option after 52 is complete.

Q: Will Elongated Man come back as hero?

Waid: He’s Supernova.

JG Jones: That’s a stretch.

Q: Why didn’t you kill Nightwing in Infinite Crisis?

Waid: Because Geoff Johns and I took turns holding a big club over Dan once we learned he wanted too.

Perez: And speaking for guys who actually earn residuals off of Nightwing, we like him too.

Q: Why was it even considered?

Waid: Yeah Dan, why?

Wayne: And don’t say again, “Because Bob said it would sell.”

Busiek: Have you ever drunk a lot of Scotch? Dan has.

Waid: Yeah, what has he ever done to you?

Didio: We were looking for the big death in Infinite Crisis – the big moment. We were looking for something that would have equal import and merit and weight in this story. One of the things I’ve been proven wrong about is that I had felt that Dick Grayson was a redundant character – Tim Drake had filled his role as Robin, he would never be Batman, so where could he go?

My big fear was that Nightwing would get older than Batman. The thought was that if we removed Dick form the equation that would allow Bruce Wayne to stand alone as Batman, and to firmly establish Tim Drake as Robin. So now – Marv is showing us why we like him, his place in the DC Universe, and more importantly, his potential in the DC Universe.

Q: Where do you see Tim Drake going after OYL – could he one day take over the mantle?

Didio: Mark, what’s Tim’s role in 52?

Waid: He and Dick are partners in 52, and there’s discussion in issue #30 or so on which of them would pick up the mantle, and why, if it ever came to it.

Q: What’s in the future of Jason Todd?

Didio: There’s a big Jason Todd story coming up in Green Arrow which reconciles who he is and what he’s about.

Didio then paused and asked the panel a question – favorite characters in the DCU and why?

Wayne: The Question with the Montoya relationship in 52. I’ve always been a big fan of the Question.

Kitson: I usually refuse to answer these types, but as you’re the boss…(I’m tempted to say Nightwing just to annoy him) probably…generally it’s one of the ones I’m drawing a the time, so at this moment, I would say Supergirl, but on balance, Batman.

Waid: Superman. Come on, who didn’t see that coming? Here’s a guy who can do anything – absolutely anything, and he chooses to do the right thing, and help people.

JG Jones: I agree with Barry – whatever character I’m doing at the time, so soon it will be Barbara Gordon Batgirl.

Willingham: Kirby’s Fourth World stuff, specifically Mr. Miracle. Dan said he might be available by 2010, so who knows. I also like drawing Detective Chimp. You know they named the company after him, right?

Perez: If I have to choose, it would probably be Wonder Woman, because it did so much for my career and it has some of the sexiest fans I could ever imagine.

Waid: I’m changing my answer to Wonder Woman.

Wolfman: After Casey the Cop, easily Superman – always has been since I was five years old and saw the adventures of Superman television show, and Mark’s answer is as good as any I could give.

Busiek: Hal Jordan – he’s the anti-Batman. Batman has everything mapped out seven ways, while Hal will jump off a cliff and figure out how not to die on his way down. Right now, I’d say Superman because I’m writing Superman and having a blast and the ideas are coming fast and furious. For one to write, Kamandi.

Jann Jones: Batman: Here’s a guy who could do anything he wanted and has millions. He could be Paris Hilton, but he chose not to. And he’s hot.

Q: Favorite villain?

Jann Jones: Harley Quinn.

Busiek: The Galactic Golem, just ‘cause he looks so cool.

Wolfman: The Joker.

Perez: The Joker – he’s an incredible character to write, but also really fun to draw. You can go from realistic arc to wild caricature, and never lose sight of the character.

Willingham: Doctor Alpaca. [making reference to the stuffed alpaca Jann Jones was carrying]

JG Jones: Streaky the Supercat – if you saw what he did to my couch… Mr. Miracle’s villains – Granny Goodness, especially.

Waid: It’s a two way tie between Mordred the Merciless and the Composite Superman, because when I was a kid, they were the only two villains that Superman was scared of, which absolutely terrified me.

Kitson: Iron Maiden from THUNDER Agents.

Wayne: The Joker – if you didn’t know it was there – the last scene of Batman Begins – best telegraph of a sequel you didn’t want to miss, ever.

Didio: As for heroes – Metal Men and Adam Strange in a tie. For villain – Two-Face. I was so disappointed when the movie version came out though. I thought that he could hold a movie all on his own.

Busiek: And then, if you cast Tommy Lee Jones as Two Face, he’s ugly on both sides.

Q: When will see the Blackhawks return?

Didio: The one genre we haven’t gotten into deeply yet other than with Joe Kubert’s Sgt. Rock miniseries, are the war books. We’re starting to look at them, and if we do, Blackhawk will be part of that.

Q: Will there be more titles like Jonah Hex coming?

Didio: More Westerns are coming your way.

Busiek: Plus Jonah Hex is joining the legion next month.

Q: George – will you ever do a series run with Batman?

Perez: I love Batman, and would be there if they asked, but in the meantime, the first issue of Brave & Bold has Batman – and I got the draw Batcave and all the classic props, including the giant penny and dinosaur.

Q: Will we possibly see single characters of the JSA getting their own series?

Didio: We’re going to be changing JSA Classified to more of a Showcase style series, and more like the original Power Girl arc featuring individual characters, so if characters break out with fans, we’ll see about launching them into their own series.

Q: Why is the new Terra not in Titans East?

Didio: She’s a new character for us, and we want to tie her in and establish her on her own before mixing her in.

Q: Will we see Diana Price as Wonder Woman and Donna Troy pick up mantle in 52?

Waid: Yes – it’s one of the key pieces we’ve yet to nail down, but it is very important. You’re going to see more and more events in 52 tying in closer to what we’ve seen in the OYL titles as things move into the final half of the series.

Q: Will we see more members joining Shadowpact?

Willingham: Yes and no. We’re going to add at least one to the membership coming up; and there’s also a storyline coming where Shadowpact gets into trouble and can’t go out, so very much like the first issue of Day of Vengeance, the question goes around the bar of “Who wants to be the substitute Shadowpact today?”

Q: Will Mon-el coming back?

Waid: Who’s this Mon-el of who you speak? Interesting…I would say there’s an extraordinary good chance – even before you may expect.

Q: Will Mordru return to the Legion as well?

Waid: Not for a while. He’s one of my favorite villains, and we’re afraid to bring him back and screw it up, and at the same time, we want to stay away from established Legion characters and villains.

Q: With Richard Donner on Action, will we see a General Zod like the one from Superman II?

Busiek: Yes.

Didio then asked the panel another question favorite comic you’re reading right now?

Wayne: 52

Waid: All Star Superman

JG Jones: I’m going to have to punt.

Waid: (whispering) 52

JG Jones: Oh, yeah, 52.

Willingham: All Star Superman.

Perez: I’m not really reading too many comics anymore, because I’ve been immersed in it for so long. It’s not that I don’t enjoy them; I just tend to find other things to do.

Wolfman: Most of the Superman line and Legion.

Busiek: Fables, Usagi Yojimbo.

Jann Jones: Fables. Dan?

Waid: Yeah, boss of us all, show no favoritism…

Didio: Actually it’s 52, because I sit in on all the meetings, and by the time the issue comes out, it isn’t like anything that I thought we talked about or approved, so by the time the issue gets on my desk, it’s all a surprise. Like the upcoming issue – what the hell is a Yeti doing on the cover?

JG Jones: Because I love him!

Q: Will we see George draw Adam Strange?

Perez: Would love to if I get the chance.

Waid: You’re assuming that Adam Strange lives through 52, which is adorable of you.

Q: Will there be another vote to kill Jason Todd again?

Waid: That’s a really cool idea.

Didio: We’re still paying back the $.50 to everyone who wanted him dead, and then we’ll turn it around and do it again [laughs].

Q: Will Manhunter appear in other titles?

Didio: She’s in Birds of Prey #100.

Q: Will we see John Stewart as Green Lantern again?

Perez: I got to draw him on the first page of Brave & Bold #1.

Waid: He’s also in 52 – John and Hal are partners. Geoff and I have talked about putting John back into the limelight as well.

Busiek: I have a big John Stewart story to tell, but I need to talk to Dan about finding a book to put it in.

Didio: We will talk.

Q: Superman was without powers for a year, Clark and Lois are married…is a return of the Superman family forthcoming?

Busiek: Keep reading Action Comics.

Moving to the Lightning Round…

Q: Why can’t Deathstroke kill even one lousy Titan if he’s such a badass?

Busiek: His secret his name is Woundstroke.

Perez: He’s got one eye – it’s a depth perception thing.

Q: Wally West – where’s he at?

Waid: He never writes.

Q: Is that Amazo on that JLA cover?

Didio: Would someone change that picture?

Q: Why is there a Yeti on cover of 52?

JG Jones: (Banging on table) Because Yetis are awesome!

The cover for Justice League of America #5 looks suggestive enough to think what the villain did to them.

Who's that defending Ralph?

Hmmm Perez loves Batman and said he would be there if asked.

I just found the next artist for All Star Batman & Robin AFTER his Brave & The Bold Stint and whenever he finishes Games

I really really like 52. I know it's asking a lot of the creators, but I'd love to have it continue somehow, or at least the format, after 52 is over. I enjoy having a weekly fix of a book that keeps me consistently entertained.

*cough*2000AD*cough* The way they have it set up, its the perfect weekly vehicle for stories.

I'm aslo sad that the Dweller is Aquaman. But from past knowledge of Atlantean magic, I'm pretty sure he will get changed back sooner or later. But I'm enjoying this book, and from their description (and my thoughts as well) the title seems that it would be a better read when collected, hopefully in one large chunk rather than six issue trades.

Why do people continue to blame Miller for the book being late?

Because we can... But I know its as much Lee as Miller... they keep passing the buck back and forth and they're both involved heavily in other media (Lee in video game and Miller in movies). Ultimately it came down to me not wanting to go back and edit my post.

AMAZO

YES! Amazo! I had a feeling they were going to use Red Tornado's body to bring him back!

Could Mark Waid have been hinting Mon-EL is Supernova?

Actually, a figure highly resembling Mon-El was shown on an upcoming Legion issue cover in the last solicitations.

If I had to guess I'd say the new Super Chief is protecting Ralph, because he is coming, you know, but I have no idea.

Hmmm, Mon-El certainly looks like he is going Supernova on that cover, too.
And some strange similarities in appearance...

I still have a feeling Supernova will turn out to be a bad guy anyways, so with
Mon-El's possible appearance in Legion(& what Waid was probably REALLY referring to), it's more than likely Supernova is a poser.
But never rule anything out...

Some great "answers" from the panel:

Didio is a fan of Metal Men and Adam Strange...so..they said yes to a MM mini, and maybe Adam won't be biting the dust. Just probably staying in space (with Animal Man finding religion?).

Kitson: IRON MAIDEN

Busiek: reading Usagi; wanting to write a Kamandi series.

More Western(s): me, I want a Bat Lash mini...with Aragones back in the saddle.

Blackhawwwwkkkkkkkkk.

ok..calm now

No denying that #24 has a very Mon-Elish feel to it, but one of the key points to Lar's character is his 1,000 year stint in the Phanton Zone... so he could still be Supernova AND coming back in the main book...

Hello.

To Dan Didio: Let Lee move into his other projects, fire Miller, and have Johns join Perez on ASB&R so that the flagship title of your All Star Line can finally live up to its name. Come on, Perez clearly stated he would do it!

Quote:
Perez: I love Batman, and would be there if they asked

So ASK him, already, and save ASB&R from Miller! PLEASE!

Be Well...

That's "Accomplished Perfect Physician" to you sir, he didn't spend all those years going to Accomplished Physician school so that you could drop the title off of his name.

Accomplished Perfect Physician is one of the greatest comic book names ever.

Eh, depends on how Metzler handles it; perhaps, even take a page from Justice League in regards to the design (though the cover works against it).
