SAMURAI DETECTIVE #1

Image's Shadowline imprint has provided Newsarama with a ten page preview of this month's Samurai Detective #1 by Manny Trembley and Eric A. Anderson. From our report in June:

Some may know them for the online comic Panda Xpress, and in Stepetmber, more will know the named Manny Trembley and Eric A. Anderson, as their three-issue series Sam Noir: Samurai Detective debuts at Image, under Jim Valentino’s Shadowline imprint.

The series, marking the duo’s first move into print comics blends classic detective fiction with the bushido code of a samurai – along with humor – to produce a unique take on a hybrid genre. “The idea for Sam Noir was created approximately 6 years ago,” Trembley said. “Publishing a comic has been a dream for 15 years and realizing this character in print is a geeky dream come true. This book is my kind of perfect balance between art that I love to make and goofy humor that appeals to me. Telling this story is extremely satisfying, and we’re very proud to be a part of Shadowline!”

The series also marks Shadowline’s first black and white title, which makes it something special, Jim Valentino, Shadowline President said. “We wanted something different for our first black-and-white book and Sam Noir: Samurai Detective definitely is. Gorgeous art mixed with a fun and engaging story that combines several genres in a way never quite seen before.”

I'm most looking forward to this particular read in my buy pile. What a cool concept. Long live black and white comics.

Wow Shadowline has hit an Homerun with this one. Go Team Go!

Make sure you guys tell your retailer to order this one for you. If you miss out you will totally regret it.

And While you are at it check out the wonderful Emissary, Bomb Queen and ShadowHawk as well....Shadowline and Image have something for everyone as Sam Noir and the titles I mentioned show.

Everytime I see new B/W books come out I get excited. I love the medium. Not that I'm gonna do every book from here out in glorious B/W, but there's something about it that appeals to me.

Thanks guys for the comments!!

Eric and I are wrapping up the 3rd issue this weekend.
I'm very excited to have all 3 issues in the can before 1 hits the stands. That'a good feeling.

All that's left now is to see how people react.

I've had fun making it and just to openly pimp Kris Simon (editor) and Jim Valentino (The Man) at Shadowline...they have both been super supportive and really good to us. We've never published a book like this for a major publisher. They definetly were patient and great to work with/for.

That is all.

Asked my shop for this a while back and I can't wait! Two of my favorite story genres mixed together and the art looks gorgeous.

I can't say the dialogue was really great but the art looks good and i'll give this book a chance.

I personally believe black & white books like Samurai Detective bring more to the art of comics than your average Batman and X-Men title. There's so much going on in the art without all the tricks that color comics uses. A creator really has to flex their artistic muscles to show the level of depth and creativity.

Not all black & white comics are better than colored comics, but clearly Samurai Detective is one those. Beautifully rendered and executed. I would recommend this book to any beginner artist, to show what can de done with subtle grace of a brush or pen without relying on full color.

For all those who avoid black & white books, please don't dismiss this as just another low quality title because it has no color.

Nice art

Love the B&W.. the dialogue is pretty hard to get through, though.. Seems pretty forced.
