DYNAMITE ANNOUNCES BATTLESTAR GALACTICA: ZAREK
With the first issue of the ongoing Battlestar Galactic series hitting this week, Dynamite Entertainment is looking to expand the universe in October with Battlestar Galactica: Zarek #1, focusing on the character from the Sci Fi series as played by Richard Hatch.
Dynamite’s solicitation copy reads:
Written by Brandon Jerwa, Art by Adriano Batista w/Aries Mendosa; Cover art by: Stjepan Sejic (50%) and Adriano Batista w/Dean White (50%)!
$3.50
Just in time for the 2nd half of Season 3 airing on SCI FI Channel in October! Hot on the heels of the best-selling, all-new Battlestar Galactica comic book series from Dynamite Entertainment comes a new Battlestar Galactica mini-series starring Tom Zarek, the loyalty-testing revolutionary played by original series actor Richard Hatch.
Revealing content from Zarek's own novel "The Revolution Within," issue #1 tells the untold origin of Tom Zarek and the Sagittaron colony. Our four issue series shows Tom's beginnings as he grows up in a loving home amidst a slave state and alongside a Cylon work force -- all in the shadow of the First Cylon War. It's through these humble - and tragic - beginnings that he becomes the man we see in Battlestar Galactica today and this is where you'll learn all about him!
Written by Brandon Jerwa in his most poignant and powerful work to date, illustrated by Adriano Batista and featuring stunning and cinematic covers by both Batista and Stjepan Sejic, Battlestar Galactica Zarek #1 is a must-read.

Actually its the first of Season 3 not second. The second half of Season 2 is due on DVD in September.
I like the idea of some miniseries to flesh out the characters and universe but my worry is that they'll contradict what's happening on screen. A character like Zarek isn't integral to the main storyline so I don't see this happening but if they branch out into the main cast it could be a problem. But I would hope Dynamite is coordinating with the producers so there's no conflict.
Brandon is a great writer and I can't wait to see how this goes.

I hope BSG isn't going the Transformers route with market saturation. Remember: always leave them wanting Moore (OK, bad joke).

I'm looking more forward to this than the other one for the reimagined series. Are these going to be miniseries or ongoing series?
I wonder if they could go a similiar route for Pegasus (from the Cylon attack to their meeting Galactica).

Very intrigued by this--I think it's the best kind of tie-in book, exploring the background stories that you know are there, but that couldn't be fully explored in the context of thew show itself.
Maintaining continuity is going to be tricky, though--wonder if this will tie in to the proposed BSG prequel, 'Caprica.'

Wow, that was unexpected, and really neat.
I too hope the continuity stays tight, there's no reason why the show can build off what's established in the comics. If what's in the comics is good.
Of course, if I remember correctly a new series of BSG Novels is a prequel about Commander Adama and Tom Zarak on an old Cylon space station. I didn't much like that idea, as having both these important character meeting before the events of the BSG mini series doesn't make a lot of sense to me.

It's in early pre-production, there won't be anything for a while. There will probibly be more news around the time of BSG Season 4.

Hmmm... maybe a bit on the geeky side, but the design on that cover for the Cylon Raiders is a New BSG design, which was not, AFAIK, encountered by the Colonials until the final war in the miniseries. From the museum replicas seen in the miniseries, the Raiders should look like the Classic BSG Cylon Raider vessel, not the New BSG Cylon Raider...

How about they just focus on getting the two books they've already solicited out on time? How about that? How about rather than throwing a million books together that are only 1/2 good and always late, we get a couple of really good, on-time books.

the cover artists are going to be playing around with new and old Cylons. Figure that there was a mix of both and note that the insides will transition form new to old as the series progresses...

But there wern't both. Current Cylon models are totaly new as off the Genocide of the 12 Colonies.
The First Cylon war was fought with Centurious and Raiders with designs similar to classic BSG. Hell when Zarek was being a terrorist, there wasn't any Cylon presence anyway. The Articals of Colonization were only drafted after the First Cylon War ended, and that's what Zarek fights against.
You can't be messing around with the continuity of the show like that, or the comics won't stand up to the show. THEY HAVE TO BE ACCURATE! DON'T GO ALL WILLY NILLY WITH CANNON!

The story keeps to the cannon, the covers have a little fun with the new and the old, think of them as posters for the movie of Zarek's life that we're telling in the comic, with the movie itself as "pure" as you're screaming for
