UPDATED: MARVEL's CIVIL WAR DELAYED

In information released to comic book retailers Tuesday, Marvel has announced that issue #4 and 5 of their hugely successful Civil War series are being delayed.

Civil War #4 [and all its variant cover editions], originally scheduled to be released tomorrow, is now scheduled for September 20th. Issue #5 and all its variants, originally scheduled for next month, is now scheduled for November 15th.

And because of the nature of the storyline, the delays in the main series will affect the related and tie-in titles, like Civil War: Front Line.

In the announcement, Marvel wrote:

“Over the next few weeks, the Civil War proper title and a few of the tie in books that are closely related to the story in the main book will be shipping later than originally planned. In an attempt to accommodate the creative team of Millar and McNiven and keep the artistic integrity and high standards of the event, we will be shifting the following titles:

CIVIL WAR 4 TURNER VARIANT (JUN061953; $2.99) moves to 9/20

BLACK PANTHER 24 CW January 2007

BLACK PANTHER 25 CW February 2007
CIVIL WAR FRONT LINE 11 February 2007
Also, starting in November some Marvel will be branded as “Casualties of War” -- similar to how they branded titles as “Spider-Man Unmasked” and “Road to Civil War”. Those titles are:

MOON KNIGHT 7

In December

CAPTAIN AMERICA: WINTER SOLDIER SPECIAL
IRON MAN/CAPTAIN AMERICA SPECIAL
MOON KNIGHT 8

In January 2007
BLADE 5
MOON KNIGHT 9
“The need for these shifts came about as the September [for November shipping product] Marvel Previews #37 was going to press and we were not able to make adjustments,” reads Marvel’s explanation to retailers. “The December Marvel Previews will reflect the changes and additions. At this point we do not anticipate further changes to the schedule. We apologize for the inconvenience but feel that this is in the best interest of the quality of the event and for retailers to continue to realize the immense sales for these books. We are announcing these shifts early enough in the hopes that retailers can adjust their buying patterns for the next few months. Also, we hope the addition of a few more key Civil War titles will make up for any lost sales that result from these moves.”

Look for more information regarding these changes as it becomes available.

Update 08.16.06 8:25am - When contacted for comment by Newsarama, writer Mark Millar said: "All I can say is that I'm as surprised by all this as you are. In fact, I only found out about it when I got up this morning and read my email. But you know what? This is a very cool thing for Marvel do to because it would have been so much easier to just go for a cheap fill-in artist instead of pushing back the books. Steve had virtually no lead-time on Civil War and a title with a million characters has proven much tougher than he expected. He and I both assumed a fill-in would be on the cards at some point, but Marvel credit Steve with a huge amount of our book's success and, as a creator, I'm genuinely stunned they spread the project out by another seven weeks to make it work for him. Marvel really took a bullet here. This pushes a lot of cash into the next financial quarter for them and they've really put product over profit here. I absolutely never expected them to work their entire publishing schedule around an art delay, but it's cool that they did and I totally take my hat off to them. Sure, it's horrible when a book we want is a little late, but I can live with a few weeks if it means getting Steve McNiven every issue. Apologies to readers and thanks to many people who were worried this meant I'd got sick again (I'm doing absolutely fine, thanks). This has been the biggest book of the millennium so far and it's clear people are passionate about waiting. But, honestly, it'll be worth it for seven issues of pure McNiven."

BS explanation. Great way to kill the series or at least make people stopped to care. What is wrong with the comic book industry now a day. Get artists that can draw fast and stay on schedule. How hard can that be?

These types of delays are what kill these types of events.

At least by making the tie-ins ship later they are keeping the story cohesive..... and it means Fantastic Four might catch up with it's shipping

Repost -

Gee, when Dan Slott is late on a book, Tom Brevoort goes public and humiliates the guy calling him unprofessional http://forum.newsarama.com/showthread.php?t=80375 but when 'superstars Millar & McNiven are late they get "In an attempt to accommodate the creative team of Millar and McNiven and maintain the artistic integrity..."

I call schenanigans!!!!

Wow - you'd think that for something this integrated into the rest of the marvel line they would have put the whole series in the can or most of it before even launching it. Look at some of those delays! some books more than a couple months delayed because of one series.

It's a great read so far and certainly worth waiting for but if I was just reading the other books I'd be very PO'd at Marvel right now....

This is absolutely disgusting. I would have thought that after last year's debacle with House of M, Marvel could have worked out that they needed to make sure crossover titles shipped on time, especially with something as high profile as Civil War. Disappointing as Infinite Crisis was, at least it only slipped by weeks at a time. I'm very disappointed in Marvel and Civil War as a result of this. The only way I can see this as being acceptable is if it's to do with Millar's health issues. However, as of late he's been fine as far as I'm aware.

A real let-down.

Huh.

Here's the thing: I usually don't care. I make it to the comic book store once a month, so delays usually don't affect me one way or the other. I don't usually notice.

But, man, is this being poorly done.

Your ENTIRE LINE revolves around this story. And while I can imagine the creators probably have their reasons, this is exactly why you stockpile issues in advance.

This is such bad business it's mind blowing.

Hard to believe no one takes this industry seriously.

If there's one way to kill momentum for a huge event like this it's bad delays.

And I still think it cause they're changing the story.

Thumbs down Quesada Strikes Again

Ooops! Looks like Marvel has really caused a SNAFU here. When the Ed in Chief can blow deadlines at will, I guess the other artists are under no real pressure to turn in work on time. And exactly when will Daredevil: Father finish up again. This is a pretty huge delay even Infinite Crisis was not bumped this far. Oh well, maybe Jim Shooter can come in and fix Marvel again soon. He shipped crossovers on time.

52 continues to come out like clockwork, every week, on time.

So you'd prefer that it come out on time but suck or have rushed pages and fill in artists scattered throughout the issue? Good takes time... I'd rather have a delay to maintain quality that regularly scheduled schlock.

interesting theory... maybe it should be posted in the Marvel forum. Could it be because not enough people are seeing the pro side?

How disappointing.
I didn't want to believe it but wow. There is only one Civil War tie-in for the whole of October? Sigh...
I'm really disappointed in Marvel, I did not see this coming.

You really think this is the last of it.

What happens to all the books that stop being tie ins by Nov and move into the aftermath In Dec. Thats every book bu the ones listed above. Do you really think Marvel are going to let these books go out.

At the best the quality of every other Marvel book is going to be affected by rushed rewrites and fill ins. Oh yeah, expect to see the return of the fill ins very soon.

I totally agree. People act like it's their given "right" to have their comics on time. As someone who works to (often tight) deadlines, I know how hard it can be to make sure those deadlines are hit, especially when having to co-ordinate with other people, not to mention the numerous spanners that can get thrown in the work.

In other words, "the writer and artist can't hit their deadlines"...

There always has to be a spin, doesn't there. They can't just come out and say the books are running behind.

Wow... that's just f***ed up.

I don't mind it being a little bit late but a whole month and after that a skip month? That's just poor and unprofessional for the over-hyped product.

Still it beats having fill-in artists (they should've get Steve Epting to draw it and it would've been no problem to let it be finished by Mike Perikins - but with a unique style such as McNiven's...).

No, I'd prefer that, with an event of this magnitude, at least half the series be finished and ready to go so there's a virtual guarantee of it coming out on time. I accept that it takes time to get things ready, but it's just so disappointing that this couldn't have been planned better.

Well, it's a bummer, BUT:

1. This means we'll save a little money... this month at least...

2. Sounds like we're getting a few extra things out of this. "War Crimes" and "Capt. America/Iron Man Special" both sound good...

3. This will allow us to appreciate Eternals, Annihilation, Nextwave, etc., all the more!

Trying to keep it positive...

Really what is the point of booms like BlackCat/Spiderman or Daredevil Father. They arent monthly they arent even quaterly. Kinda defeats the objoect of being a monthly comic book.

That's not the point. A responsible, well run business would have those issues IN THE CAN before they started releasing them. They're going to lose a lot of money because of this.
