Post DC BRINGS TONY WONG TO GOTHAM CITY

Press Release

Legendary Hong Kong comics creator Tony Wong teams up with veteran Batman scribe Doug Moench for the original, 4-color hardcover graphic novel BATMAN: HONG KONG, scheduled for June release. This 128-page epic takes Batman from his Gotham City home to the other side of the globe for a truly international adventure.

"Tony's art combines linework, dazzling color and painterly techniques, and he provides everything from layouts to separations," says Group Editor Andy Helfer. "Tony practically invented the comics business in Hong Kong, so we're very pleased to have him on board and working with the tremendously talented Doug Moench on this amazing story."

BATMAN: HONG KONG begins when the Dark Knight discovers a serial killer who uses streaming video to broadcast his vicious executions via the internet. To put a stop to these brutal slayings, Batman travels to Hong Kong, where he gets caught in the middle of a feud between two brothers: one, the head of a local gang of criminals, the other, the chief of police! Now, the Dark Knight's only hope may be Hong Kong's own super-hero, the mysterious Night Dragon.

BATMAN: HONG KONG is a 128-page, 4-color, hardcover graphic novel scheduled to reach comic book stores in June.

Newsarama Note: Wong Yuk-long, known in America as Tony Wong, is the creator/writer/artist of such titles as Weapons of the Gods, The Legendary Couple, and Mega Dragon & Tiger which have been most recently reprinted by ComicsOne.

Wong made his debut in Hong Kong comics when he was 13, with his work first seeing publication in Epoch Comic Weekly. Over the years, Wong created characters such as Little Vagabond, The Son of Ultraman and Solar Lord. Wong’s Jademan Comics virtually monopolized the Hong Kong comics scene for the bulk of the ‘80s, but folded in 1987. After a short stint in jail for a forgery charge, Wong founded Jade Dynasty and began to publish manga again.

Never heard of this guy in my life, but it sounds like it could be pretty cool. It's pretty neat how no matter what the trends are in the industry, no matter who the creators are or where they come from, everyone still wants to take at least one shot at The Dark Knight. I would question DC's decision to put this into hardcover right away, but hey, maybe they know something I don't I'm not going to complain about it, all the more power to 'em.

Tony Wong's comics were printed here in English during the eighties.

Titles like Drunken Fist, I believe Mike Baron was involved in the translated scripting.
