TALKING MARVEL WESTERNS: WESTERN LEGENDS

by Benjamin Ong Pang Kean

Saddle up (again), fanboys!

Writers Jeff Parker, Karl Kesel and Fred Van Lente are going to take you to the days of Marvel’s wild, wild west in July’s Marvel Westerns: Western Legends.

Here’s how the special one-shot was solicited:

MARVEL WESTERNS: WESTERN LEGENDS
Written by Jeff Parker, Karl Kesel and Fred Van Lente, penciled by Tomm Coker, Carmine Di Giandomenico and Homs, cover by Eric Powell.

Three all-new tales of the Mighty Marvel West! Do you remember the Man Called Hurricane? Over a hundred bounty hunters and cowboys looking for revenge do. The "Fastest Man in the West" doesn't have much of a choice but to face them at once. Question is, does he have enough bullets? By Jeff Parker and Tomm Coker.

Red Wolf is a considered superstition by many, but a group of thugs are about to find out how much is fiction and how much is true. Surviving their challenge is another thing all together for Red Wolf. By Karl Kesel and Carmine Di Giandomenico.

Major Brett Saber is known as the Man from Fort Rango, hard-nosed leader of a rag-tag group of frontier soldiers. His unruly men are no match for a deadly band of Indians intent on holding their stronghold, but a mythical man-beast poses a deadlier threat to both sides. By Fred Van Lente and Homs.

Plus: Re-presenting the origin of Rawhide Kid by Jack Kirby.

48 pages, $3.99, in stores on July 19.

We caught up with the trio to discuss their respective takes on the legends of Marvel’s cowboys.

I am so hyped with this new interest in Westerns. Jonah Hex and Loveless have me hooked and the titles that Marvel has coming out look just as good or better. I just hope things do not get sloppy with so many Westerns being introduced at once. Hex and Loveless each have a unique tone. I hope Marvel follows that lead.

I'm very excited to pick this one-shot up and I know it will be great. I wish Joe Queseda would hype Marvel Westerns more though, between Civil War and all the shake-ups in the Marvel Universe, Marvel Westerns has gotten very little press.

I'm getting all of the Marvel Western books for sure, but this looks like the best so far. I'm already a Red Wolf fan.

Thanks for the cowboy comics Joe Q!

The Man Called Hurricane looks really good. The pic posted right above me here is the one that sold me. At first glance it loked almost silly, but the more I look at it the more sinister it looks.

Despite loving the previous works from the creators of the Two Gun Kid, Kid Colt and the Arizona Girl, this is probably the only Marvel Western I will be picking up. The stories just sound too good to pass up.

WOW!!!!

I am really looking foward to Red Wolf and Hurricane. These look so much better than the untold tales of the new universe *booooooring*

I am really hoping that these are good. I hope that the creators play it straight--no irony, that is (NOT a Rawhide Kid allusion!) I think Red Wolf is a character with a lot of potential, and I like that Marvel seems to be embracing its Atlas years. But I hope they have the courage not to undermine the characters or the concepts because they think they are silly. I think Eric Powell is not the best choice, from what I've seen, of a cover artist. I don't care for his rendition of Kid Colt, for instance.

I am eagerly looking forward to these, and I hope that I am not disappointed. Look at what J&J--Palmiotti and Gray--are doing with Jonah Hex. No hybrid genres (monsters, the supernatural), no self-referentiality that takes a reader out of the story. Have faith in the characters, do it to the best of the creators' abilities, and exciting, heroic, and mysterious comics stories will result.

I REALLY want these to be good.

Englehart's take on the Black Rider--setting him in New York--reminds me of the Black Coat, even though it is a century later in setting.

Yes! I dig Coker... the rest of this stuff looks cool too (though I don't like westerns much, I don't mind a couple of one-shots)....

Add one more compliment for the pages from Tomm Coker -- that's some great page design.

I'm looking forward to the Marvel Western projects as well.

Did I miss it, or is Rawhide Kid not appearing in any of these issues?
