So, I can't make it to ComicCon this year, but one of my coworkers is going, and I'd like to pick up some original art, but I have no idea who is going to be there or how much they charge. Any advice on that front from anyone ?

At San Diego, I think some of them raise their prices. You can check the website to see whos in Artists Alley too.

What do you think $150 could get me ? A few decent pictures ? ( and thanks for the info by the way, much appreciated ) .

Sure you can. Prices range depending on creators and most charge a decent price depending on their mood, what size book you're having them draw in and basically how you come off.

Just remember that if the person that you want to ABSOLUTELY POSITIVELY get a sketch from is really popular, that you need to get there early on the first day of the con and get on his sketch list early. Especially since you're talking about San Diego (im assuming) and thats going to be ultra-busy.

Some artists are so busy for the weekend with scheduled signings, panels, etc that its difficult for them to please everyone and the only way to guarantee yourself a drawing is to be one of the first few on their list. For example, I was about 15th or 16th on an artists list which I signed up on Friday@11am for. The guy was obviously busy and had tons of things to do, and was able to finish my sketch by Sunday at 4pm. He was a great guy and I totally understand why it took a couple of days and am super happy that I was able to get one.

My recommendations for artists you should get sketches from in your con-going experiences are:

Andy Lee, Phil Noto, Andy McDonald, Mike Oeming, Pop Mhan, George Perez, Cully Hamner, Randy Green, Paolo Rivera, Bryan Lee O'Malley, Alex Robinson, Andy Runton and there are many others but these are off the top of my head.

I didn't get nearly as much as I'd hoped, but here's the two I did get...

Fellow Newsarama User:

Ben Towle...incredibly talented and a great guy to boot! This is a sketch based on the cover of his new comic "Midnight Sun" ...highly recommend it!!! Thanks again Ben!

and here's a great shot of Dennis the Menace by Marcus Hamilton. Another great guy who actually lives here in Charlotte.

I am MODOK

I'm trying to think of a good theme for San Diego. This is probably the only time I'll ever get out there, so I'm really psyched to get some sketches from guys I'll never get to see again!

Dave Johnson! Ron Lim! Roger Robinson! I'm very psyched!

Anybody ever get anything from Johnson? How much does he charge?

I got out to the Sci-Fi Expo here in town today and managed to pick up a couple of new sketches.

This is Emily Edison by Brock Rizy. Emily Edison is a new book that just came out from Viper Comics, and if you bought a copy of it ($13) you got a free sketch with it.

This is Deathstroke by Steve Erwin, who did Deathstroke, Checkmate, and various Star Trek mini's. (I almost picked up an original page full of Klingons, but decided against it at the last moment because i was hungry and almost out of money).

These are just digital pics until i can get over to my mother in laws house and scan them in.

Ok, so I got my Spider-girl art today.

Now here's my question: since it's pretty big, what can I buy to protect it? I would frame it, but I don't have anywhere to hang it. I remember when I was at WW:Boston, there was this booth selling sleeves for art that is like this. Anyone know what i'm talking about?

You can buy 11 x 17 portfolios at an art store. It works well for me.

I use something similar although it's not the same brand. Acid free and all that to protect the stuff I don't frame.
