If you've only picked up the very first issue, I would say you have missed out on a lot. The first issue was a complete spoof on superheroes. The issues that followed put a twist on that. The story that developed from a team you could do nothing but hate turned into a team you wanted to damn near cry about by the time one of the originals was killed.
The X-Statix series started off a little slow with the first 5 issues, but the last 5 have been outstanding. With art by Allred, Leon and Bond the art is a great asset to a book that is smart and turns the superhero genre on his head and then flipped it back over leaving the genre dizzy.

after myself first hearing the hype, i picked up an issue, and really did not dig it. i thought the art was basic, the story menial...
but... i persisted, after fellow fans persisted on hailing the book as the best thing since the pen that takes the bikini off a chick when you click it... and now x-statix (pka x-force) is one of my regulars. i don't worship it like many others do, but it IS very unique. It's funny, it's tragic, it often catches me in keanu reeves moents of "whoa." if you can handle the few extra bucks, try to pick up the back issues, they give you a feel of what to expect. i really don't want to spoil anything, but you know how in Powers there are super groups that are big business...? well, it's along those lines.

The thing about this book is that it looks like a Silver Age comic while deals with celebrity super heroes who are probably among the most shallow, self-centered, deplorable characters (everything a hero shouldn't be) ever created. And you can't help but root for them every time because Milligan has made the characters into characters you actually care about.
My favorite arc so far is the "Death of ???" arc (not gonna spoil it for you). I have the single issues, so I'm not sure of what trade, but it may be the last X-Force trade Marvel released before the series changed its name. Great stuff, especially when you consider the Marvel hype machine was going full steam touting the death of this character, then kept you in suspense for months (page by page in some cases) wondering who was going to buy it (and in X-Force/X-Statics, characters really do buy the farm). Say, that reminds me, it's been a while since Milligan has killed someone off. Aren't we about ready for one soon .

I would also suggest the second Milligan/Allred X-Force trade (although, I'm not sure if you'll lose some of the connection to the characters, it is still the best).

I just got the hardcover collection last week. It was worth every penny! A question. I thought the doop decoder was included in the HC, but I didn't see it. Any info on where I could find that? Thanks.
