WW PHILLY ’08: CUP 'O JOE [QUESADA] PANEL

It wouldn't be a convention without Marvel Editor in Chief Joe Quesada's Cup O Joe panel, and this year's WizardWorld: Philadelphia is no different.

The pre-panel began with Marvel's Arune Singh pointing out that CB Cebulski was holding on to the $2000 limited edition Iron Man LG cell phone which will be raffled off to benefit the Hero Initiative. Panelists for Cup O Joe include: Cebulski, Tom Brevoort, Sing, Fred Van Lente, and Joe Quesada.

Addressing the nearly capacity room, Quesada said that he was going to get things started, and pointed out that there were still raffle tickets remaining.

The Editor in Chief began with announcements of upcoming projects:

Marvel Zombies 3 by Van Lente and Kev Walker.

"Just in time for Halloween, Marvel Zombies will invade the Marvel U, in continuity, and the Initiative has to rise to the challenge," Van Lente said.

Devil Slayer a four issue MAX miniseries will also begin in September.

Confirming what Stephen King himself had announced, Marvel's adaptation of The Stand will begin in September, written by Roberto Aguire-Sacasa. The first chapter of the adaptation will be entitled Captain Tripps, referring to the name survivors and victims gave to the apocalyptic virus in the story. Quesada said that King will be fully involved with the adaptation of the acclaimed novel. In response to a question, Quesada said they knew how many parts the full adaptation of the 1000+ page novel will run, but aren't saying it publicly just yet.

September will also see the introduction of Lady Bullseye in Daredevil.

The presentation period over, Quesada opened the floor to questions.

Marvel Zombies? In the MU?

Why? This is moronic, in the same way bringing The Fury into the MU is moronic. WE KNOW THEY CAN'T USE THE GIMMICK IN-CONTINUITY, so they automatically water it down into pointlessness.

Fred Van Lente on Marvel Zombies 3? Sounds interesting
Next up Marvel Apes vs. Marvel Zombies. You know you want it.

WOW! RAS sure is getting some high profile work at Marvel. Wonder how long until he finally gets a chance to get that Unholy War project he's been throwing around.

As for Lady Bullseye, only question is...what does this mean for Bullseye 1.0?

I would actually read a story with Nurse Doom, just cos that name is awesome! Galactress also has a nice ring to it. And there's already been a She-Goblin (or a coupla She-Goblin robots, but still). I'm all for this, actually. Gives the MU a few minor legacies, diversifies things a little, and so far it seems like only good writers are doing it (Brubaker, Guggenheim).

Devil Slayer! Been hoping they'd revamp him for quite some time.

Although I would have preferred him back in-continuity, in a darker, horror/magic themed new Defenders book. Why they continually go the campy route with the Defenders time and time again is beyond me. It never works. But I digress....

The Walkin' Dude, Randall Flagg.

I shouldn't be this excited, but those Flagg images are awesome...

If there's one thing Brubaker still absolutely has to do with the Bucky Cap, it is have him meet Baron Zemo.

For me the best news is that Roger Stern is doing a Spider-Man story! Hope it's in Amazing and not a mini.

First David Michelinie doing an awesome job on the Legacy of Doom mini, now Stern making a comeback. Is Marvel finally realizing that older writers still have stuff to contribute?

Marvel Zombies 3 is going to suck. Why? Because it has gone too far at this point. The only mini-series that should have been made were the first mini and the "Army of Darkness" Crossover. That's it. But since the first mini was so popular, Marvel needs to milk it (and probably because they know that Marvel Apes won't be as cool/trendy to milk).

Having the Zombies in the Marvel Universe, in continuity will also ruin the story. Do you HONESTLY think that anyone will be turned into a Zombie? Or maybe we'll see the Marvel Universe turn into a Zombie Universe and then the last survivor makes a deal with the Devil to fix it all...or maybe Wanda can do her magic garbage to make it all okay again.

I'm passing on Marvel Zombies 3. This coming from someone who has every issue that involved the Zombies from the beginning to the disaster called Marvel Zombies 2. Maybe when Marvel Zombies 3 bombs, the milking can stop and the dead can be put to rest.

EDIT:

Forgot to talk about "The Stand". As long as they don't cut TOO much from the novel, I'll buy it.

New Thunderbolts writer has been selected?

CHRISTOS GAGE! PLEASE

Ok, he might be busy co-writing A:TI and all the one-shots and specials he's got at Marvel not to mention everything else he's got going on outside Marvel, but I'm still going to push for his own ongoing book

At least this means the book is not going to end after SI, though more than likely we'll be getting a new roster.

Only big news (for me anyway) - Zombies 3. I guess they're invading 616 from the Initative being mentioned.

"Just in time for Halloween, Marvel Zombies will invade the Marvel U, in continuity, and the Initiative has to rise to the challenge," Van Lente said.

So is this going to be crossing over into other books? If so, I hope it's well-explained, since I've been doing my best to ignore Marvel Zombies.

Again touching upon Spider-Man, Quesada said that "something" happened on Peter and Mary Jane's wedding day, but all of their history happened. "It's a story for us to tell, and it's a darn good one."

No, it didn't. In the comics they got married. Now they didn't. Ergo, all of their history didn't happen. I'm not sure why they're having so much trouble grasping this concept. You can't have it both ways.

Baron Zemo will be returning soon, Brevoort answered when asked if the Baron would be coming back into the spotlight.

Could be good news, depending on whose doing it and if they don't toss out Fabe's work with the character.

Quote:
Will Incredible Hercules ever turn back to Incredible Hulk?
Quesada said he honestly didn't know the answer to that right now.

I'll take that as really good news, and that we might be continuing to get Herc for a while.

Quote:
Quesada said that when you see Jackson on screen in that role, it feels like he came right out of a comic book.

Er, except the Nick Fury I grew up with was white...

Quote:
In response to a question about original Guardians of the Galaxy members making appearances, Brevoort said that readers will see a couple of familiar faces from the original series in the first several issues of the new series.

We knew we were getting Starhawk, but sounds like maybe more? I hope it's not just flashback/cameo. Possibly Aleta? It'd be easy enough to bond her back with Stakar and you effectively get two for one.

Quote:
A new Thunderbolts writer has been selected, but Brevoort declined to say who it was.

If it's not Gage, there's no justice (like lightning).

I love when Quesada brings up the Daredevil example. As though one late comic book over 40 years ago can be compared to how absolute epidemic lateness has become in the industry.

Asked if Marvel will be using Roger Stern more, Brevoort said that Stern is writing a Spider-Man story.

Thank you, Jesus. Roger Stern has always been one of the best Spider-Man writers, and his "Hobgoblin Lives" mini was one of the very few high points in a decade of mediocre Spider-Man books. If I remember correctly, he was one of the most vocal opponents of the Spider-Man marriage, so I'm curious to find out what he will do with the Brand New Day status quo. If the rumors I heard are true and Bob Gale is leaving the Spider-Man brain trust/writing stable, please consider Roger as a permanent replacement.

And finally make that book a weekly series! As beautiful as Tony Harris' art might be, "With Great Power" is no substitute for the main series, and I have my doubts that the Secret Invasion miniseries will be.

Hopefully Marvel Zombies 3 will finish out the story, because there's not much left you can do with them except put them against Marvel's horror characters (Blade,Ghost Rider, Man-Thing, etc.) or go REALLY gory and do a standalone MAX mini.

It's interesting: so many folks are angry at Marvel for OMD/BND (myself included), but no one seems to mind the CONCEPT of dissolving the marriage. It's simply the poor execution here, and I wish Marvel and Quesada would understand that and fix it already.

Which -- yes, this is a plug -- I've been doing on my blog and got a very cool write-up by a comics reviewer.

I've still got them married...but, you know, one step at a time. (And, no, killing MJ or divorcing them is NOT an option.)

Agreed, this is the best bit of news I got from that article. I just wish Marvel would start reprinting more of his classic Spidey material. I have the Spidey Visionaries volume but that came out quite a while ago. They need to get to the Stern/Romita jr. material.

Yes it did. When are you people understand that everything happened just with out them being married.

From what I'm thinking is being Spider-Man was what kept them from getting married. but they dated for a long time.

But I'm thinking she does know Peter is Spider-Man. I know they said know one knows but I don't think they would want to spoil future story lines by saying she did.

Why do I think she still knows. Simple. Marvel has stated that the change came about a year ago. And it has been stated that Mary Jane knew Peter was Spider-Man since Amazing Fantasy #15.

In the graphic novel Parallel Lives by Gerry Conway, Alex Saviuk and Andy Mushynsky it showed that she saw Peter run in the house on the night of his Uncle Ben's murder while staying with her Aunt Anna next door. Then saw Spider-Man come out the window of Peter's room.

Because it doesn't work. You can't say everything happened but they weren't married, because they were married. Ergo, everything didn't happen.

Wow, I have to say this gives me a teeny-tiny blossom of hope.

As I have stated in this thread, I would love to see Minnesota with a new First Line. I don'yt care if its just a mini, I would love to see it. Hell, I'll even mail them all the picture references of the Twin Cities area.
