DC ANNOUNCES WATCHMEN MOVIE MERCHANDISE ROLL OUT
Press Release
After unveiling the incredible line of WATCHMEN MOVIE products at the New York Comic Con and online at EW.com, DC Direct solicits the first wave of products inspired by the upcoming movie in this month’s Previews.
Get ready for a three-month WATCHMEN MOVIE product extravaganza, beginning with items solicited in the June Previews for release in January 2009, with two more waves coming in February and March, coinciding with the March, 2009 theatrical release of WATCHMEN.
DC DIRECT brings both longtime and new fans of WATCHMEN what they crave: collectible action figures, intricately clothed 1:6 scale deluxe collector figures, exquisitely sculpted busts, and straight-from-the-set prop replicas! All products feature accurate likenesses and detailing, from face to costume to accessories.
A complex, multi-layered mystery adventure, WATCHMEN is set in an 1985 America in which costumed superheroes are part of the fabric of everyday society, and the “Doomsday Clock” – which charts the USA’s tension with the Soviet Union – is permanently set at five minutes to midnight. When one of his former colleagues is murdered, the washed up but no less determined masked vigilante Rorschach sets out to uncover a plot to kill and discredit all past and present superheroes. As he reconnects with his former crime-fighting legion – a ragtag group of retired superheroes, only one of whom has true powers – Rorschach glimpses a wide-ranging and disturbing conspiracy with links to their shared past and catastrophic consequences for the future. Their mission is to watch over humanity . . . but who is watching the WATCHMEN?

Does "classic" mean based on the comic, or the earlier time period of the movie? And if it IS based on the comic, then why no Rorschach?

Classic refers to the 60s era in the Book/Movie, while modern is the 80s.
I'm sure they'll get around to Rorschach. He's in the movie too.

Yeah, that's what I expected. I guess the movie means no figures from the comics, since it'll be easier to simply make them from the movie than hash out the difficulties about the book.

those movie star replica superhero figures always look dorky. Why not make a series based on the books or even find a happy medium?

I guess it would depend on whether DC are willing to stop caring about Moore's feelings on the matter.
I think these figures look pretty good in terms of the movie, but I'd much rather have Nite Owl's paunch on my desk.

I'm starting to get the same feeling as Moore got by the hype back in the 80ies. I'm dreading that by the time March rolls around I'll be so sick of seeing Watchmen stuff everywhere that I'll throw a punch at anyone wearing the smiley badge. I'm NOT looking forward to this.
