BUFFY TAROT DECK: HIGH PRIESTESS
Dark Horse Comics has provided Newsarama with a look at one of the upcoming cards from the Buffy the Vampire Slayer Tarot Deck, written and conceived by renowned tarot writer Rachel Pollack.
Pollack, who has written 12 books on the tarot, teamed with Buffy artist Paul Lee on the fully-painted 78 card deck, which draws upon characters, themes, and legends from all eight seasons of Joss Whedon's work.
This deck was created by Pollack not merely as a collector's item, but as an actual, working tarot deck: the cards come with a book explaining their divinatory meanings and use. The traditional symbols of the tarot are reinterpreted through the vision of Whedon's Buffy universe.
The Buffy the Vampire Slayer Tarot Deck is slated for release in August.

Nice artwork - but as a tarot reader myself, I really don't like these pop-culture-themed decks, not even one based around my favourite show.

Yeah, for those that actually believe in the Tarot it's kinda like decorating your home with Buffy-themed recreations of the Passion of the Christ.

Just curious but what do you think of the plans for a Buffy Ouija board?

Silly, but a bit of fun I suppose. Ouija boards are kind of pointless anyway.

Interesting to hear from a couple of tarot readers. I'm thinking of getting it, but I don't have that reservation. I'd be buying it strictly as a collectors item and Buffy fan. ^_^

My church taught that those who dabbled in witchcraft would be possessed by demons. I'm not really religious, but I'm still too afraid to use Tarot or a Ouija board.

I like the artwork, but would have no use for the cards. Maybe they'll add them into one of the TPBs?

Yes. Isnt it amazing how religious indoctrination can still have an emotional effect on a person, even if that person has learned to think logically and rationalize.

Rachel Pollack is also considered an authority on the Tarot in the Western mystery tradition community.

Church authorities always said/did things like that because they wanted to be the end all/beat all for people searching for spiritual guidance. Witchcraft is mostly people tapping into the raw power present in nature. Organized Christian based religions are often afraid of religions they don't understand, or don't require a hierarchy "management" that tells you what you can or cannot do.
With that said, I think there is something to gain from ALL religions and beliefs. Nothing to do with Buffy, but there you go...my two cents, take it for what it's worth.

I've worked as a professional Tarot Reader (and am a huge Buffy fan), but I would never, never touch a Ouija Board. I did when I was younger, never again. Any form of Ouija Board is dangerous (whereas Tarot is only dangerous to the same people whom violent of horror films are dangerous too, those with erm, mental health weaknesses).
I cannot believe someone has released that board.
I'm not totally sold on themed decks, but I think the challenge (and fun) is in the designing of them, not the reading of them. I've played with a superhero deck idea for years. One day I will finish it. Still, for teenage readers, it would be a good way in, recognisable symbols to learn the language of the Tarot.
