VIDEO: DAN DIDIO & MIKE CARLIN TALK TRINITY

What?? You thought we were done with our New York Comic Con Dan DiDio DC interviews..? Nope, we promised more and more we have...

In this segment, Dan talks to long-time DC editor Mike Carlin, mostly about DC's next weekly series, the Superman/Batman/Wonder Woman vehicle Trinity by Kurt Busiek and Mark Bagley.

As always, look for an archive of all these videos on Newsarama’s special New York Comic Con Mini-Site and/or new video archive page…

Awesome. This is one weekly I'm optimistic about and Pacheco doing some of the covers? Nice. I didn't think his Superman run was long enough.

Yeah uhh........sorry mr. carlin, but superman and batman and especially wonder woman are not the most vital hero's in all of comics. They are up there but that space also now belong's to Spiderman and in this afternoon..soon to be Iron Man.

In DC those 3 are most vital,in the whole realm of comics...it's more than those 3.

Iron Man is a fantastic character but he needs more than a box office total to elevate him. Spider-Man IS up there. For me it's Superman, Batman and Spider-Man.

As if IRon Man is going to be one of the most vital of superheroes. One movie isn't going to change that. The trinity in DC have still had way more exposure to the public than Iron Man has. You might as well say the Fantastic Four is up there too.
(But I tihnk the three most vital heroes in all of comics would have to be Superman, Batman and Spider-man)

I'm still going to try Trinity, but I can't say I'm really all that hyped about it.

I agree with you in the sense that Wonder Woman shouldn't be put on that level when she has only been able to consistently support one comic. However, putting Iron Man on that level would be wrong too. I think both Spidey and Wolverine could be argued as belonging in that group way before Iron man.

Video interviews

I just can't get into video interviews. Watching things on youtube and such is fine, but watching someone getting interviewed on the net just seems so contradictory to the whole web experience.

Are these videos ever transcribed?

When DC puts out a weekly comic that can compete with Warren Ellis and Paul Duffield's work on FreakAngels then I'll pay attention.

On one hand, I found the info in this interview rather interesting.

On the other hand, after reading Carlin's Countdown interviews, I really don't trust him anymore.

UGH...Carlin is the editor? NOOOO.. I especially hate his weekly Newsrama useless and insulting interviews. The best thing about Countdown ending was that those awful interviews were over. He really turned me off. I'll give the new series 12 or more issues..but if it shapes up like countdown and he does interviews like the countdown ones...I'll drop it.

Haven't gotten to mention it but these videos, The Stack and Word Balloon are really great additions to the front page of Newsarama.

All you need are some Newsarama meet ups to really say you're using the internet to it's fullest potential.

Aside; I don't think we're taking essential heroes, which is a sales pitch not a measurable quantity, we're talking name recognition.

The order I can remember learning about super heroes:
Superman
Batman
Spiderman
x-men
Fantastic Four
Super Friends (which in the end turns into a lot of super hero introductions)

I don't remember knowing Wonder Woman before super friends. She's a character who could use a good movie to boost her name recognition. She's on the edge.

The Iron Man movie was awesome but he was way down on the list of characters I was introduced to. So I don't know if this movie will do too much to elevate him.

I think just about everyone agrees the biggest three names are Superman, Spider-Man and Batman. In what order is debatable, I say in that order (obviously)

12 issues? You're willing to spend $36 before you decide whether or not to drop it? I'm giving it the same number of issues to impress me that I give every series I try: one.

I will give Trinity a three issue attempt. But seriously a third weekly is overdoing it, especially since Countdown likely pushed people away.

I'm buying this just to see Mark Bagley take on the DC Universe. A good storyline will just be cake...

i was excited about trinity, but i think busiek's writing took a real downturn on his last superman run.

superman #675 is just the latest example. look at the dialogue, for crying out loud. it's like he's not even trying. witness such gems as:

"you're the freakin' man of steel! you're not going to let one exploding cosmic giant take you down, are you? listen to me! listen to me and hold on..."

yeah, i'm really feeling lois lane as a realistic character there. sigh. "you're the freakin' man of steel?" please don't ever write lines like these again, kurt! i used to really love your writing...

My Observations

Good interview, I'm looking forward to this series.

I travel the globe as part of my job. Mostly Europe and Asia. I would say the two most popular Marvel Characters are Spider-man and Hulk. It takes a long time for the average person in some regions of the world to become aware of a comic book character.

By far, I found Superman and Batman to be the most well known characters followed by Spider-man. Wonder Woman is well known because of the Linda Carter series, as is the Hulk because of the Bixby series.

I was so glad you said AND instead of OR -- because I can guarantee the story and art are shaping up real nice-like, but who can guarantee Mike's interviews?

With at least 1 out of 2, we're safe!

And congratulations, I think you might be the first person I have ever seen who stated a purchasing criteria to be on-line editorial interviews! So much more pressure on us than ever before... ;-)
