NYCC '08 VIDEO: THE SPIRIT

Not to be lost in the virtual boon of comic book-based films in production is perhaps one of the more intriguing entries, the big-screen adaptation of Will Eisner's seminal The Spirit, directed by arguably the most influential comic book creator of the last two decades, Frank Miller.

In part oe of this 2-part interview preview, the film's producers – Michael Uslan and Deborah Del Prete – discuss being able to make movies that look like the comic book art it's adapting, the fact (in Uslan's judgment) Hollywood finally "gets" comic books are not just about superheroes, and using digital production techniques pioneered in Sin City and 300 and inventing new ones to take the art of comic book adaptation to "a new level"…

In part two, Uslan and Del Prete discuss casting the film, including how the late Will Eisner actually had some influence over who was eventually cast in the title role, and the things Will Eisner/The Spirit fans will go crazy for when they see it on-screen …

So they're making a Spirit movie now because only now can you make a comic book movie that looks like the comic book art, but they're using this technology to make a movie that looks nothing like Will Eisner's art? At least, based on the teaser they've released...

Eh, I actually liked the teaser trailer, although I DO hope this doesn't end up just being a knock-off of Sin City, stylistically speaking.

But that's exactly what the trailer showed. Believe your eyes, not producers. Ever see Kevin Smith's rant about Superman Lives? Producers are full of ****.

I don't think the trailer looked like Sin City, I didn't get that vibe at all.

the dialogue was corny as hell tho.

Just don't draw anymore

Whatever keeps him from scrawling comics. His art is terrible anymore. Such awful rendering from the guy who used to totally Rock 30 years ago. DK2 looked like a 10 year-old drew it. Maybe we'll be spared his Batman too, since he hasn't had a grasp of the character in 25 years.

Spawn/Batman = Absolute garbage.

DK2 = A horrific PoS.

All-Star Batman = silly nonsense.

Still waiting for a readable Batman book.

I think I would have preferred an animated Spirit movie.

I mean if you really want to capture Eisner's style...

Bitch, bitch, bitch.

I liked the teaser trailer, when I saw it at the Con. I wanted to ask Miller if he liked being the Sam Peckinpah of the comic book industry, plus I wanted to call him a goddamn liar not having the Sin City sequels primed yet, since Eva Mendes was an obvious choice to play assasin Mariah in "Hell and Back".
