NYCC '08 VIDEO: MARK WAID

Mark Waid had an eventful New York Comic Con 2008. In addition to appearing there as the BOOM! Studios Editor-in-Chief, the fan-favorite Waid was also there as the newly-announced addition to the Amazing Spider-Man writing team. But all those commitments didn't stop him from dropping by the Newsarama digital newsroom for a few moments of shop talk.

In Part 1 of this two-part interview preview, Waid talks about joining the established Amazing writing team and how that group dynamic differs from the writing team he was part of for DC's 52, where he falls on the Spider-Man marriage issue, and the fact that he doesn't care why J. Jonah Jameson hates Spidey, he just loves the fact that he does...

In part 2, the always-amiable Waid discusses BOOM!'s recent acquisition of the Farscape comic book license, the advantages and disadvantages of licensed properties vs. orignal, and why Hollywood have such a craving for comic books properties (psssst.... he has a secret he'll share with you that he doesn't want the Hollywood people to know a about)...

Mark Waid seems like such an awesome guy. I'm a huge fan of his work and can't wait for his Spidey arc.

THAT'S more like it!!!

EXCELLENT interview. Anyone who watches this can see that Mark Waid is one of the brightest and best people in comics. He really gets how they work, and doesn't flinch to say how he sees it. You saved the best til last.

It´s an astonishing news that Mark is going to work on Spidey. I´m sure he will do an excellent work just like his FF run.

I like Mark Waid's Marvel work, didn't follow his DC.

Interesting to note that he thought throwing in a marriage to a Super-Model wife was a bad thing. Flows with what Joe Q was saying about Peter hanging around the rich super model set kinda thing.

So.... now we have Peter hankering after the uber hot Lily Hollister (a la the Super Model thingy and with a seeminlly rich background), hanging out at super rich parties with his super rich 'pal' Harry with his rich circle (I mean, it was in the bloomin' first issue of BND - written by Dan Slott no less [what a disappointmenmt]. Yes, I tried the first arc and check out the rest on the store shelves, I mean, there are still plentry of unsold ones on them. Won't buy tho.

So... besides Peter selling his soul and responsibility to the devil, whats changed from the MJ status quo? Seems the same kinda stuff to me.

The dynamic has just shifted to different characters which still keeps Peter in the same playground Joe Q wanted him out of.

I hope that if this "same old day" rubbish is gonna be the established norm (I hope not), at least someone of the caliber of Mark Waid can do something credible with it to entice me back.

Did Waid happen to say how long he's going to be on ASM, or is it just a guest arc?

I think Mark Waid will be a perfect fit on the ASM near-weekly. The current series so for has been done with a slighly lighter touch (which I like.) I don't think he would have fit in as well back when the series was a much darker, semi-horror title.
