IDW LAUNCHES GALAXY QUEST: GLOBAL WARNING IN AUGUST
Press Release
Galaxy Quest is back in a comedic comic book miniseries of galactic proportions! This August, IDW Publishing will present the debut issue of an all-new Galaxy Quest miniseries, Galaxy Quest: Global Warning. The five-part series will pick up years after the goings-on of DreamWorks’ 1999 cult film favorite.
In Global Warning, written by comics veteran Scott Lobdell (Uncanny X-Men) and featuring full art and colors by Greek artist Ilias Kyriazis, it’s been 20 years since the cast of Galaxy Quest ruled the airwaves. Alas, the intervening decades have involved lots of sci fi conventions and retail store grand openings and precious few acting jobs for our brave band of thespians. Now, on the eve of the re-launch of America's most beloved science fiction series, Galaxy Quest: The Journey Continues, a world-threatening crisis occurs! Will the Earth survive? Maybe, if Jason Nesmith and his fellow actors-turned-adventurers have anything to say about it! In the immortal words of his alter ego, Commander Peter Quincy Taggart, "Never give up! Never surrender!"
“Fans, and numerous Targathian babies, have cried out for us to bring Galaxy Quest to comics, and we’re all too happy to oblige,” says Chris Ryall, IDW’s Publisher/Editor-in-Chief.
"Let's face it. Is there anyone who saw Galaxy Quest that didn't come away wondering about the continuing adventures of Jason, Sir Alex, Gwen, Tommy, Guy and Fred and Jane?" asks writer Scott Lobdell. "We've pined away for a sequel long enough! Now we're going to learn what became of these actors after their first greatest adventure together. Yes, they are excited about the re-launch of the franchise that made them cult icons, but don't think for a moment that success has quelled their quirkiness. And when they have to suit up again, and take the Protector out of orbit...? Let's just say experience isn't going to make their jobs any easier!"
Galaxy Quest: Global Warning #1, a 32-page, full-color comic book, debuts in August ’08.

Oh man, that's great news! Galaxy Quest is a very cool little movie, and seeing a sequel of sorts to it sounds like a lot of fun. I even like the piece of art, very quirky.
"Can you put together a makeshift lathe?" "Get off the line, Guy!"

I'll probably give this a look because it's Scott Lobdell but between this and the Hardy Boys why isn't this man working on bigger and better things? He had a hand in Age of Apocalypse, Onslaught and so much of what has defined the X-Men as we know them today. Editorial mishaps notwithstanding, his stories were always great and his dialouge was simply the best.

You know, the big joke to consider is that IDW is also the company that produces the Star Wars comics.
the crossover writes itself.

Hip Hip Horray!
Three Cheers for the return of Scott Lobdell. I have always said he was one of the best writers in comics. I mean sure his Hardy Boys stuff lately has been...juvenile...but that was the intended audience. His stories cemented my love of comics, so I will always pick up what new stuff he does. This is awesome news!
As for his vanishing act in comics...from what I heard there was a thing going on where the publishers of main stream comics didn't feel he was right for today's tastes. Kind of a bad reminder to when the majority of comics lacked real substance. Personally, I hope this opens the door to more Lodbell work in the future, and a return to High Roads!

Dude, no one laughs at Cowboy Artie.
I was lucky enough to meet both Scott and Lenil Yu at last year's San Diego Con at got my High Roads TPB signed by both of them. It's now one of the few books not kept in a longbox.

I met them years ago when Scott was working on the Darkness. As I recall no publisher invited him to attend or paid his entry. He was working for like three big publishers and they all assumed the others were taking care of him.I have all the issues of High roads...had them sign my #1 too. I always pictured that title being a series of mini-series' each story telling the tale of someone in the Highroad generations. Like next story is maybe his grandfather, or son, or great grand mother, etc. Wow I forgot how much missed his writing... Time to break out High Roads, X-Men, and Generation X!

I had the pleasure of doing a signing with Scott years ago and he is by far one of the funniest guys I've met.
This is going to be a great series!

Some of my favorites are Darkness/Batman and Manifest Eternity. Have you seen either of the movies he wrote, Man of the House or Mosaic? Kinda curious, but neither grabs me. I'm in the process of compiling all his issues of X-Men and Uncanny, do you know anywhere I can get a complete list?

The Darkness Batman is particularly cool. I really liked the X-Men/WildCATS he did too. I can't remember the issue, but keep in mind that Scott Lobdell did some penciling towards the beginning of his career as well.
Finding a good complete list is actually pretty tough for any creator. When I am trying to find a list of comic creators I usually go to one of three places:
www.comics.org -- My favorite
www.comicbookdb.com -- Pretty good as well.
www.milehighcomics.com -- least favorite...has obscure stuff sometimes though. Look for the little link "Comic Creator DB" on the left side.

I can't believe how much my opinion has changed for IDW. I was never a big fan of their publications when the company first started, but they are now in my top 5 of comic publishers(their great Dick Tracy & Terry And The Pirates reprints helped). I also love the quailty of the paper and covers they use(especially when compared to Vertigo and Dynamite). Since it looks like we'll never get a sequel to the movie, this is a good close second.

Now they just need to do the companion book- The Three Amigos! That would be one hell of a cross-over, The son of Sarris and El Guapo team up to take over the Earth.

Not by a long shot, my friend. Star Wars is far superior to the Trek.

You have the coolest signature ever. Where did you get that Scott Family image? Can you share it?

I was happy to see them get the TF license but so far they've done little with it to be noteworthy outside of thankfully just keeping it alive, though most of that is probably Simon Firman's fault. For all the flack he got I still thought Pat Lee was a great artist, if not a shoddy businessman.

He pencilled? Wow, I never knew. Do you know where his art showed up? Thanks for those two sites, but for my money MyComicShop.com (which I had already used to make a Lobdell biblio) is much easier to use and more complete than MileHighComics.com, and past that I love Scott's Wildcats/X-Men Golden Age book. Combine that with the Modern Age part of the story that had artwork by Terry Dodson and the Dark Age one that was written by Warren Ellis and you have one vastly underrated crossover.

After the first mini did nothing for me and Bay's crummy movie did even less, I stopped reading their Transformers book and never looked back. I'm scared the same thing will happen with G.I.Joe if they get the license. They'll reboot the comic and we'll get another, imho, crappy Hasbro movie on top of it.

Well, truth be told I'll never stop reading it. I mean even as bad as they are Transformers is my absolute favorite franchise/story/set of characters ever. If I may, I recommend the Spotlight: KUP from IDW and the first Beast Wars mini-series, both were actually good even if the latter was a SimFur production. Also, while I agree 100% with your assessment of MICHAEL BAY's Transformers I have to say that the new TF Animated is amazing (even if you can't get past all the chins). Where else are you going to get the guy who voiced The Tick back in the day voicing a new character that has the same look and feel as the original (Sentinel Prime)? The just wrapped up two-parter RETURN OF MEGATRON was particularly good.

Actually, you'll probably have whichever Wayans brother is playing Ripcord to blame for that...

I'm actually thinking of giving it another shot with the upcoming Megatron 12 part maxi-series. While Transformers is still behind G.I.Joe and He-Man for my favorite toy related franchise, Gen1 is a strong third. I haven't seen the new cartoon because I was afraid it was going to be in a similar vein to Bay's movie(I actually saw that movie 3 times, I wanted to like it so much;I don't know what other people saw in it). I'll check the toon out.

That's my big problem with the casting so far. I don't care how great some people think he was in Requiem For A Dream, he has a lot more awful movies to make up for. If they wanted another minority in the movie, they should have taken a black character like Stalker, who's a great character and better known than Ripcord, and given it to a good actor. I'm definitely going to see it, but the only casting I like so far is for Snake-Eyes(Ray Parks may not be an A-class actor, but he doesn't have to talk for the role) and Scarlett.

Alpine, Doc, Road Block, Heavy Duty, Stalker and so on. Isn't Ripcord a white guy anyway? I didn't know he was in Requiem for a Dream but wasn't he in that God-awful Dungeons and Dragons film? I am so looking forward to Ray Park as Snake Eyes, but I haven't heard anything about Scarlett. Who's playing her?

Yeah, Ripcord is a white guy, although I don't remember much about him. I hate that they'll change the race of a character in movies for no reason at all. It's not like there's a limited number of white or black actors to match up with the right role.
Rachel Nichols is playing Scarlett. She was good in the last season of Alias and a little seen horror movie called P2. Even though it looks like the G.I. Joe movie is going with the bland X-Men movie black leather look, at least they dyed her blonde hair for the role.
