NYCC '08: GAIL SIMONE VIDEO INTERVIEW
Fan favorite DC writer Gail Simone stopped by the Newsarama digital newsroom Saturday at New York Comic Con on route to her own spotlight panel.
In this preview of her conversation with Word Balloon's John Suintres, Simone discusses the value of the female characters of the DC Universe, the return of her WildStorm series Welcome to Tranquility as well as the DCU series Secret Six, and what major DC characters she'd like to write in the future.

Even though I think the Stack guys are funny on their comic review show, John seems much more comfortable giving an interview. I've never listened to Word Balloon before, but I might start now.
If they forget/"fix" the Trials Of Shazam, Gail would make a great writer for Captain Marvel. She's has that fun storytelling ability that Billy needs, and she also seems great in her use of older B and C-list characters. Just look what she did for Catman.

Simone has been saying for a long time that Captain Marvel is her favorite character. But Didio keeps giving him to Winick.

Okay, I'll say it. Given her sense of humor, she needs to team up with Ethan Van Sciver to do Plastic Man.
That would be uber-awesome.

Not even because of her writing but just through her personality and the enthusiasm for what she does, Gail makes it so easy to be a fan of hers. I've never come across a creator that seems to be as into interacting with the fans as Gail. And, of course, it doesn't hurt that she's one of the very best writers in the business today.

Why must you point out these things which I've blocked from my mind because of the extreme mental abuse it causes me?

I very nearly exploded with glee upon hearing that more Welcome to Tranquility is on the way. I thought it was completely over when month after month went by with no further solicitations or new issues released. I think WtT is easily the best of Simone's comics and, although I'm sure I'll hate waiting between six-issue bursts, it's certainly better than nothing. Great interview.

The only videos I even bother watching are the ones with John Siuntres. He should do all the interviews

I agree about John, first of all. He really is a terrific broadcaster, interviewer and personality in general. It's nice to have him in comix. Watching his interviews, and heck, being interviewed by him is smooth as silk. He even pronounces names correctly!
And now Gail...dear, sweet Gail. To see and hear her get excited about what she's doing just re-energizes me in my own work. Great interview, brief but entertaining and fun. I will read Secret Six. I am not gay.
Am I?
Thanks!

Not to switch gears but Ethan, I hope the stars are aligned and you get to one day pencil an AQUAMAN book.
And by Aquaman I mean the ORIGINAL!
And yes, Gail rocks!

Audio file
I find these WordBalloon interviews/conversations very interesting and enjoyable. Is it possible to download these audio files to be listened on an mp3 player?

Yeah, you can download pretty much any episode of the WordBalloon podcast through iTunes. I've been listening for a while, and Siuntres does a great job interviewing just about everybody. You can tell he's a huge comics fan by some of the really weird, esoteric questions and references he comes up with sometimes.

I'm not much of a fan of podcasts/video, but I saw in the intro Welcome to Tranquility's coming back? Great news; now can someone give me the details? Please? : )

Gail is so fun!
I just read the first Welcome To Tranquility trade a couple weeks ago and thought it was great stuff. I'm looking forward to the next trade coming out and more stories of the town.

Gail said she's got six more issues planned right now, and then they'll probably release another six issues after that down the line, and so on. So it looks like Welcome to Tranquility may be going the Hellboy/BPRD route and turning into a series of mini-series. She also said that there's an overarching story arc for the whole town.
Whatever happens with WtT, I just hope Neil Googe can do some more art for it. I really love his style.

Is "The Stack" no more? I haven't seen it in a while. I've been tinkering with the idea of checking out Simone's Birds of Prey trades since I've heard good things about it.
Only Simone I've read is the Villains United limited series and the Villains United one shot. The Secret Six limited series is still sitting under my bed unread.

If DC doesn't have Gail eventually write Captain Marvel, I must question their sanity. Seriously, either she or John Rogers on that title would be a license to print money.

Nope, it's still around... Posting got a little behind with the NYCC prep, and getting the new video player ready. You can check out all the shows at pulpsecret.com, we've been doing three a week, or over at youtube.com/pulpsecret. Or, just wait around, and they'll be up here soon.
Oh, and Simone's run on BoP is great, definitely pick it up.
