NYCC '08: CUP 'O JOE PANEL
We say it nearly every convention, but that's because it's true - it almost wouldn't even be a comic book convention with Marvel Editor-in-Chief Joe Quesada's traditional Cup 'O Joe panel.

Are they seriously going to do MARVEL APES? What's really sad is that I'd probably buy it, seeing as how i loved it when DC did it...

Choi & Oback on X-Force is great news for that title (reuniting them with their X-23: Target X writers); it was still an appalling mistake to take them off UXM in favour of hack and thief Greg Land. It's ridiculous that so many satellite titles will have art far superior to what should be the main event (and issue 500, even).

Good news about Choi as exclusive and in a regular gig.
I have to echo the sentiment of that Stan Lee phonecall otherwise.

Why would you make more Halo books when you can't even get the one book out that was supposed to tie in to the release of Halo 3 out on time? Even if it is Bungie's fault for the book taking nearly a year to finish, wouldn't you think that it's just not worthwhile to make books on the franchise?
And in 3 years Lindelhof has done two issues worth of scripts. Pathetic.

Yeah, I call bullsh it on that too.
As for Marvel Apes, though I'm not surprised that they're actually doing it, I won't be picking it up. It's a pretty stupid idea, and if they're hoping for another sleeper hit like Marvel Zombies, they're sadly mistaken. I really don't see it selling well at all.

A fan that called Cable and Deadpool the "funniest comic ever written" expressed upset feelings over the title being cancelled. "It's sales," Buckley said.
|
Oh yes of course it's sales and not the whole splitting Cable and Deadpool up and giving them each their own ongoing. Yep that was all due to sales.

Because Marvel Zombies was such an obvious runaway hit from the start...

While a fan was asking about a possible Ares/Thor fight, Queada feigned taking a call on his cell phone saying, "Nope. Haven't seen it. Not for months." Upon completion of the call, he said "That was Dan DiDio looking for his market share."

Quesada said he sometimes gets phone calls from Stan Lee out of the blue, and that the other day he got one with Stan asking, "I just read the last couple months of Marvel Comics. What the ____ is wrong with you?"

I'd rather take Marvel Zombies 3 or Zombies vs. Army of Darkness 2, instead of Marvel Apes. Besides they left the story open ended so it makes then enough sense for it to continue.
And the direction of Uncanny looks iffy from these previews.

But at that time Zombie comics were very big in the independent market, the concept hadn't been seen before, and Robert Kirkman who wrote the Walking Dead wrote Marvel Zombies. Marvel Apes just feels like they are milking a concept of the same heroes bing in an alternate univerese. With DC I can see an ape version of heroes working in a one shot stroy, becuase of Grod, but not as alternate Universe like marvel zombies I can't. BTW I loved the Marvel Zombie concept.

Quesada ended the panel with a black and white image of a man with a long hair with wolves and human skulls at his feet. "I can't say what that it is yet, but it's going to be huge," Quesada said.
So, does anybody have a picture of this slide? I'm curious to see what it looks like and I don't see it amongst the thumbnails on the page.

Marvel Zombies was a ridiculously "stupid" idea and NO ONE knew it would be as popular as it was. It went past "selling well". It was a phenomenon. T-shirts, the book sold in Hot Topic, etc.
This probably won't reach that kind of status, but you'd be insane to think this wouldn't sell well. All they need to do is put a good writer behind it and it could be ____ing hilarious.
It's not a "stupid" idea. It's something that was obviously MEANT to be stupid and silly.
Also, this was a fan suggestion from a couple years back. Now they're listening to that fan. There was lots of talk about how funny it would be if they listened to that fan at the panel a while back.
And I just have to call you out for sounding kind of childish in general. "This is a stupid idea, I won't be picking it up." You shouldn't come to any conclusion as to whether or not you'll buy it at this point. There's nothing (literally, nothing) pointing towards this being good or bad.
