NYCC 08: POWER GIRL GETS HER OWN SERIES

Going back, even before the JSA Classified arc by Geoff Johns and Amanda Conner in which she starred, DC fans have been clamoring for Power Girl to get her own series. That clamoring has only gotten louder as the character has been featured by Johns in Justice Society of America, and will be the focus of this summer’s JSA Annual which sees Power Girl traveling to Earth-2.

Well, it’s time for the clamoring to stop. A Power Girl series is coming, written by Justin Gray and Jimmy Palmiotti, with art by Amanda Conner. We spoke with the team about what’s to come for the Last Daughter of (Earth-2) Krypton.

Newsarama: Jimmy and Justin - first things first - how did you land the title? Was it something that you pitched to DC and had to sell them on, or was it a case where DC was looking to start the series and came knocking?

Justin Gray: Whenever Jimmy and I discussed what we’d like to work on we kept coming back to Power Girl. The problem was that she’d been solidified in JSA and some exciting plans were in place for her. During a meeting with Dan Didio we expressed an interest in writing Power Girl. Dan said he wanted a pitch, but that it would be a while before she would be available. He wasn’t kidding because that meeting took place last summer...

This book has me both worried and excited.

On the one hand, good creators and clearly they love working on the character and they know she kicks ass. On the other hand, Power Girl IS a feminist character and while many of us don't like the boobhole, we can live with it as long as she retains her awesomeness. But the fact that they have to go out of the way to defend the cheesecake and "It's not New Age Feminist or anything, so don't worry drooling heterosexual male fanboys who match our vision of sexy!" just makes me grumble.

That being said, I'm definitely picking up this ongoing. ^_^ About damn time!

Power Girl has to be one of my least favorite JSA'ers- that being said, I'll give it a shot, hoping Gray and Palmiotti can change my opinion..

I'm fairly new to comics but even I know it's about time PG got her own series. Graymoitti have done great stuff on Freedom Fighters with some very powerful and very human characters. Can't wait.

This book isn’t going to be our platform for some kind of new age feminist commentary; it is a superhero comic book, an escapist fantasy starring a buxom blonde bombshell who can kick your ass into outer space. Some people are going to find fault with it just because of the costume and the bra size of the heroine and those people can bitch about it on the Google machine if they like because this is America baby! Home of the free!

Awesome. God Bless America!

Perfect creative team. Just perfect.

Palmiotti and Conner are to Power Girl what Millar and Hitch are to the Ultimates!

I've loved this character for a long long time, and I'm very excited about this news. I hope the book gets the audience it deserves.

I love Amanda's covers. Maybe Adam can do the inevitable variants.

I'm a huge Amanda Conner fan, so I'm excited to hear about her doing an ongoing series. But my first question is- what will this do for her other announced projects such as the Terra mini-series and Paul Dini's Zatanna/Black Canary graphic novel? I hope to still see those as well as the PG series.

IIRC, the Terra mini's almost in the can, and will be solicited soon. No clue about the other one, though.

Serious question: what Earth does everybody think this series will be taking place on? I'm hoping that PG stays on New Earth, and the fact that Starrlabs exists makes it seem that much more likely, but then again...

I haven't bought a DC title in over two years now but this one has my interest. I did read the JSA Classified story and liked it a lot. This could be great if it isn't to continuity heavy(Marvel Zombie here) and it lives up to the JSA: Classified story.

I'm not a fan of Palmiotti and Gray, but I am hopeful for this title because I really like Power Girl.

I like the idea of them not running from the sex appeal of the character, but it takes a deft touch to equal the sexy with quality and class.

Maybe I missed it in reading the article, but do we know if this will be taking place on Earth 2? I wouldn't completely hate that concept or anything, but I don't really want Powergirl to be missing from the rest of the DCU.

Amanda's art got me to buy that awful BC/GA wedding issue, so this is a no-brainer buy. One of the better, expressive artists out there who really captures facial expressions well.
