WORD BALLOON: ANDREA ROMANO

On this edition of the Word Balloon podcast, host John Siuntres chats with Andrea Romano, the casting and voice director for Warner Animation, who's been directing the dialog sessions for TV shows like The Boondocks, Sponge Bob, and all of the DC superhero projects, including the Batman, Superman and Justice League films and TV series.

You'll get behind the scenes details about the upcoming Batman Gotham Knight DVD, the highly successful Justice League The New Frontier, and next fall's new series Batman: The Brave And Bold.

Andrea also talks about casting Kevin Conroy for the original Batman animated series, and answers the perennial fan question "Why doesn't Conroy play Batman in every Warner Bros lamination project?"

Plus fascinating voice over stories about Brooke Shields (New Frontier's Carol Ferris) David Boreanaz (Hal Jordan) Phil Morris (John Stewart) and many other stars .

Another great episode, John. I've always wanted to hear more from Andrea, after only hearing bits and pieces from her on the various DCAU dvd extras. We always hear about Bruce Timm, Paul Dini, and the rest, but Andrea is about as vital as anyone to the success of those cartoons. She's awesome, plus she has a kick ass hair cut.

Y'know, even with a bit of Brane and the Bold (she's is the voice director on), there is nothing in this interview on another DTV project that I would've liked to hear: WONDER WOMAN!!!

She said that Kevin doesn't really have the time to laminate everything that a company the size of Warner Bros. would need laminated. And he doesn't like sticky fingers.

1) http://www.wordballoon.blogspot.com/ for all your word ballooning needs.

2) Andrea did say that Kevin does not do all things Batman because her bosses ask for other actors on other projects. That said, she mentioned how Kyle Mclaughlin did a killer job on the old timey New Frontier Bats and that for consistency Kevin will be the voice for all of the shorts in Gotham Knights (or whatever the new DVD is called).

3) Great interview John. Man, she squeezed in 3 hours of material in that interview. I got anxious just listening, but I know that that's the sort of energy a voice director needs. Congrats to Andrea for her role in the evolution of the American cartoon. The maturity and care and talent put into those works pay off in ways that some of their live action counterparts do not. The performances themselves have often been more life-like than real life.

she says it's basically because the people who make the shows want who they want, and it's not always his voice (or version of Batman) that they envision when they create various shows using the Batman character.

nope, Kyle is Superman. She said (I disagree) that he even looks the part, but he was chosen b/c he was able to put a voice in Supes that fit in with the retro feel of the show. Paraphrasing here.
