DC UNIVERSE #0 - THE REAL COVER

You’ve seen a teaser or two, but today, DC Comics has provided Newsarama with the real deal – the true cover to May’s DC Universe #0

Back in February DC’s Dan DiDio described the one-shot, saying:

“Originally, we were going to do Countdown to Final Crisis #0 - that’s what Countdown has been counting down to: 51 to 0 – 52 issues in total, a year’s worth of work. Ultimately though, what happened was that when we were looking at how #0 was being created, we realized that in collecting Countdown to Final Crisis, it would be hard to collect the #0 issue, because it would leave us on a cliffhanger at the end of the book. We felt that probably wasn’t the best way to end a book, so we decided to end all the Countdown stories with #1, and therefore make the #0 issue separate. That’s when it became Final Crisis #0.

“Then, Grant was involved in the writing of Final Crisis #0 of course, and Grant wanted Geoff to co-write it with him. But as we were building the book, we realized that the story wasn’t contained to the stories that were flowing into Final Crisis, involving New Gods and Monitors, but really touched upon so many major events going on throughout the DCU including: more hints to the Black Lanterns story, what’s coming up in the Batman storylines, Superman’s upcoming stories and Wonder Woman as well. Because it started to expand outside of Final Crisis, we repositioned the book one more time, and now it’s called DC Universe #0

“And since this is becoming more of a springboard to all of the DC Universe in 2008, we wanted to make this much more accessible to all of our fans and separate it out from Final Crisis and Countdown so it can really stand alone on its own feet. As such, it’s going to sell for 50 cents – 24 pages by Grant and Geoff, with art by a wide variety of folks including Ivan Reis, Carlos Pacheco, Tony Daniel, George Perez and Aaron Lopresti.”

Nothing very special there, IMHO.

Though it is nice to see Superman with his Legion Ring on.

And the fact that DC appears to be acknowledging The Spectre again after a year hiatus.

Wesley Snipes said it best in White Men Can't Jump, "It's so pretty. It's so pretty."

Look okay. Perez is getting typecast for these types of images.

Well, that's because he's the best there is at what he does and what he does is draw very pretty massive spreads of characters.

He got typecast for those kind of images a loooooooooooooong time ago.

He still does covers much better than almost anyone else in the business.

if they wanted to be accessible it's absolutely silly that Supes is so prominent and Bats isn't.

i was planning on buying a bunch of copies to try to get some of my more Marvel oriented friends to give DC a try but supes so prominent and Bats not totally undermines that. guess i'm just gettin' a copy for me

Use that Superman image while you can, DC

Seriously, though, great cover. Personally, I hope Kyle and more of the current and DnA Legion get some love, too, but there are plenty of covers left to squeeze everyone in.

And the Spectre with a goatee still looks rediculous. We get it, he used to be a black guy, but "facial-haired spirit of vengeance" just looks dumb.

I don't like composite covers like this. They're cluttered and messy.

I'd rather they had 3 variants, each with one of these groups.

Who are those 2 guys in the villains section next to Reverse Flash?

I think he's well aware of that and has no problem with it at all.

I certainly don't mind it

Here's another reason for not making this Countdown #0. I mean, if the cover is to be taken as any indication, this book features not one of the characters who played prominently in Countdown.

Aw, J'onn'll still be lookin' funny come this issue, huh? Maybe by the end of FInal Crisis. If he's still alive.

Also, does that cover indicate a Salvation Run tie-in?

Also, Spectre, get yourself a shave.

That was my first thought as well.

That said......LOVE the cover.

Year hiatus? You've not been reading Countdown to Mystery, then. He hasn't been on a hiatus at all.

I'm prepared to be considered an idiot . . .

but I think that Perez's artwork really isn't that great. It's rather simplistic and old-fasioned. The ability to cram a ton of different characters into one picture doesn't mean he's a great artist.

That makes no sense at all. If you were going to have your marvel friends try a little DC, I'm thinking it would be based on your belief that FC is going to be a well-written, interesting read, right? Not because of the size of one character or another on the cover. If they're Marvel fans, why would they even care who's featured on the cover???

Stupid.

No......the fact that he is a great artist makes him a great artist.
