WINNER NAMED IN SHADOWLINE'S WHO WANTS TO CREATE A SUPER-HEROINE CONTEST
Press Release
With over 5,000 entries to go through, five finalists were announced in what may have been comics’ first contest for writers! For the first time ever the fans were allowed to choose their favorite, which will go on to be published through Shadowline as 3-issue mini-series, drawn by fan-favorite artist Franchesco!
The clear winner was Tom Arguello’s Incredible Journey:
Journey Dominguez was a normal teenage girl with big dreams living in a world full of superheroes. All she ever wanted was to be one of them. Everything changes one day when she finds a strange necklace on the street. She puts it on only to find out that she cannot take it off, and that it gives her the ability to summon a temporary superpower for whatever situation she’s in. There’s only one catch; every time she uses a power, she is really stealing it from one of the Superheroes, leaving them permanently powerless and the world increasingly defenseless. All Journey Dominguez ever wanted to be was a super hero. Now, she must convince the world she is not a super villain!
Shadowline Editor-in-Chief Kris Simon and President Jim Valentino would like to congratulate Tom and the four runners-up for their participation over these last 3 months:
1. Kat Cahill: I Hate Galaxy Girl
2. Dirk Manning: Hope
3. C. Edward Sellner: I’ll Fly Away
4. Kristopher Waddell: Challenger
But it doesn’t end here! Over the next several months we will be showing the entire process of creating a comic from plot to script, from layouts to finished art giving an insiders view into making a comic step-by-step, warts and all (another first?) with a lot of help from the artist, Franchesco! It should prove to be an educational experience for anyone interested in making comics.
Please join us at www.kris-korner.com in the ‘Who Wants to Create a Super Heroine’ forum and watch as the book progresses through its many stages.
Shadowline would like to thank all of those who submitted, voted, our final five and yes, even all those who nitpicked, griped and were otherwise rude…at least we got you talking and hopefully, thinking. And now, you’ll excuse us as we’re about to embark on an Incredible Journey!

That actually is a pretty cool twist on the Dial H idea... Congrats Tom-- looking forward to seeing how it plays out!

I'd just like to say congrats to Tom.. It was a fun contest, and even tho' I didn't make it, it helped to get my "writing mojo" jump-started. So for that, I am happy.

That's a really cool idea. Congratulations to the winner and all the runners-up.
Franchesco's art is great, too. Kind of wish she looked more like the normal girl Tom's idea states than the typical busty superheroine, but I guess they're called the " trappings of the medium" for a reason.

Awesome! Congratulations.
That was my favorite of the five entries so I'm glad it won and can't wait to read the finished product.

Funnily enough, just knowing that a great idea won gives me as good as feeling as if it were mine. Congrats to the person who won, many thanks to the organizers, and...erm...here's to the next contest!

Thank you, everyone for your kind comments. I feel like Charlie after winning the chocolate factory! I'm so excited and grateful to be able to work with Jim, Kris, and the Fantastic Franchesco! who has already blown me away with his sketch of Journey.
Stay tuned folks, the best is yet to come!

Thank you for the compliment, Corpulent.
You bring up an excellent point... and I hope you tune in to see what shape the book will take.
Guessing a lot has to do with what is the definition of "normal" in the context you referred to.
does "normal" mean: plain, mousy, average?
does "normal" mean: non-superpowered?
For the answer to that question, I really hope you tune into the story that Tom and I will tell.
I hope to not disappoint. Thanks again for the compliment.
Biggie Congratulations Tom!!!
...and Congratulations to Kat, Chuck, Dirk and Kristopher
for not only being great writers, but for being total class acts every step of the way.
Kudos one and all!!!

I gotta say, though I didn't vote, I was hoping Dirk's Hope would win. It was the only one that struck me as something I would actually read.

Congrats to the winner. Though the concept doesn't exactly excite me, I'll still check it out, for Franchesco's art and just to help insure this kind of contest comes around again someday.
Thing is though, I completely missed the voting. When the heck was that posted?

That was kinda my first reaction, too. Which sucks, because it feels like sour grapes more than it should. I'm hoping that the final product has less to do with big hair and bigger boobies than it does storytelling.
Let me try not being a dick about it...
I really dig this concept and can't wait to see what comes of it. Much congrats.

Congrats to Tom. His hard work and creativity.
Thanks to Franchesco for his talented detailed art.
And thanks to Valentino and all involved in making this possible.
It is and artists world and the industry makes it all but impossible for new writers to get in (unless you write for a different genre or are the son of a celebrity)
I didnt win, and I feel with Tom's great concept I shouldnt have.
I had a twist on the concept I did that if I added before I submitted I am sure I wouldve made it to the final twenty.
Cocky? No. JUST CONFIDENT AND DAMN HAPPY THIS CONTEST EVEN EXISTED!
Thank you Shadowline and thank you Newsarama

TOM! Welcome to the Shadowline family, my friend!
They did tell you about the initiation--right?
Congrats to the other finalists as well. You made it to the final five and that's nothing to be ashamed of.

I think I will check it out. It's a great idea, and even if your definition of "normal" is a little more voluptuous than mine, the sketch still looks great from a technical standpoint.

Congratulations, Tom...you've got a guaranteed reader right here! Also, I'd like to compliment Fresco...damn she looks right purdy
Kudos to everyone involved...especially to Kris for the unbelievable trauma her eyes no doubt sustained during this process.
