ASB&R #10 - QUITELY VARIANT COVER
DC Comics has provided Newsarama with your first look at Frank Quitely’s variant cover for All-Star Batman and Robin the Boy Wonder #10, due out this month. The solicitation for the issue reads:
Written by Frank Miller; Art and Cover by Jim Lee and Scott Williams; Variant Cover by Frank Quitely
Batgirl, Catwoman, Black Canary, and even Detective Gordon's better half give Gotham a headache so big it'll split the city in two!
Batman | 32pg. | Color | $2.99 US
On Sale April 30, 2008
Quitely weighed in for Newsarama on his process in coming up with the final image:
“At first I thought it'd be fun to do my own version of Batman and Robin, fully intending to make my cover as different as possible, simply because that's one of the things you can get away with on an alternate cover,” Quitely said. “While I was playing around with the composition of what I wanted to be an absolutely iconic image of them, I started considering what it was specifically about the All Star dynamic duo that I liked, and that's the nature of their relationship - the impact this relationship has on Bruce and Alfred, on Batman and the rest of the league, it's a very loaded, complex thing.
“I re-read the series up to this point and instead of something deliberately ‘alternate', I've ended up with a piece that looks much closer to the established aesthetic of the series than I had at first intended. It's still my version, but it's my version of Frank and Jim's Batman and Robin.”

Nearly nobody draws costumes as well as Quitely. They look like real wearable things without looking stupid, it's fantastic.

I find myself wondering the same thing about All-Star comics as I did about Ultimate comics a few years ago: instead of wasting great creators on some auxiliary line that won't be relevant in 5 years, why not just put them on the main, in-continuity monthlies? Especially in the case of artists, who aren't necessarily as tethered by continuity or baggage as writers.

I might be the only one who doesnt like Quitely's art at all.
ASBAR is fantastic, but after almost 10 issues, nothing's really happened. Though I did love the Green Lantern issue.

Wow, he re-read the entire series just to do an alternate cover. Thats dedication. And as always Quitely amazes.

I love this series, and this Quitely cover. But is this really shipping this week? It's not on the Diamond list for this week or next week. And it's not on my Diamond invoice either...

sometimes i don't know if i like his art. but i think that's freaking sweet. i think quietly isn't on any monthly titles cause he can't keep monthly titles. that'd be my opinion anyway

Theres no excuse for doing all these alternate covers when his book is literally years behind schedule if you add up all the delays that are all Quitely's fault. He could have probably drew a page or two if he actually sat down and did his job instead of random side projects and cover fill ins.

Depending on how long Morrison stays on Batman, it'd be awesome for Quitely to come in for a fill-in arc or something.

but your assumption about the Ultimate Line "a few years ago" was flawed, yet you are gonna ask the same question again?

I was thinking the same thing. Last I saw on the DC website, it wasn't coming until 4/30.

the look on Robin's face makes it look like Batman just stick his finger up Robin's bum.
