PHILIP TAN SIGNS EXCLUSIVE CONTRACT WITH DC

Best known recently for his work on Spawn and Spawn: Godslayer, DC Comics has confirmed for Newsarama that artist Philip Tan has signed an exclusive contract with the company. The length of the contract was undisclosed.

“This is really about the interest and support DC has shown to me, and how passionate Dan DiDio has been toward the plans he has for me working with DC Comics,” Tan told Newsarama. “And I really appreciate that overall. It's one of those things where we talk about the long-term goals for myself and DC, and they have a real interest in finding the right type of work for me and the projects that will best showcase my talents. Plus, everyone at DC has been really, really cool welcoming me.”

For Tan, the move to DC is one of finally being able to work on some of his favorite characters. “I grew up on DC characters and have read them throughout my career, but I never got the chance to work on them before this,” Tan said. “So this is a great opportunity for me to work on the characters.”

And while the artist is named as one of the handful of pencilers who will be working on May’s DC Universe #0, Tan played coy about his immediate future at DC.

“There are some big things happening in the next year at DC. And I'm very excited to be a part of that. The project I'm working on really is one of the biggest of my career. I'm more excited than anyone else to announce this project. Unfortunately, I can't talk about it yet. But now, at least I get to tell people it's something really cool for DC Comics.”

Check back for more on what Tan’s talking about later today at Newsarama.

Can someone post a sample of this guys artwork, so we can have an idea what his style is like?

Is Tan a quick artist or slow one? DC needs another slow artist like it needs a hole in the head...

Spawn Godslayer is really taking a hit with this. I wonder who TMP plans to put on the book now? I love Tan's art but most likely be following him to DC since I can't seem to get into its characters.

Wow, he really seems to have stepped up his game since his run on X-Men a while back. (If you don't remember it, just as well...it was around the Draco arc from Austen which is best left forgotten)

I am thinking of the same guy, right?

Philip Tan and Billy Tan are not the same artist. Billy is currently working on X-Men stuff for marvel (and I think he's currently exclusive with them as well but I'm not sure). Philip Tan works(ed?) on Spawn: GodSlayer however He did do an arc of Uncanny X-Men with Chuck Austen. It was the Draco arc with Nightcrawlers father but that's the only marvel work im familiar with for Philip.

Despite the SPAWN: ARMAGEDDON story kinda weirding me out quite a lot (but it was good), the art looked friggin' beautiful.

(And since I don't believe SPAWN really has many, if any, skip months, I think he's quite good with the scheduling thing...)

Methinks this am good for DC.

Yeah same guy. But Marvel was such a mess back then I figured that Philip was probably forced to throw together some pages at the last minute. If you look at his issues of Spawn from before Uncanny they were much more in line with his work from Robert's link.

I guess that is better than tracing stuff like our friends David Mack and Greg Land.

Yes, Phil and Billy Tan are related.

Just as Stan and Jim Lee are brothers.

Off? I don't see anything "off" here personally. He looks like he does solid work. I am also speaking without ever having see a panel of his. I see his art there and it looks nice, but it's basically poses and whatnot. If I saw Justiano's artowk as poses, I might say it's "off," but lo and behold, it crackles in a panel.

I believe Godslayer is canceled as of issue #9.

Shame. It was an excellent book.
