Tangent: Superman's Reign #1 (very mild spoiler and question)

In this issue, Tangent Earth is give as Earth 9 (correct) but New Earth is designated as Earth 1!

This is a mistake, isn't it?

Yes, assuming this cross-over really does take place on New Earth ....

I thought about that, but I doubt they'd break out Earth 1 for a Tangent limited series.

Besides, it all looks like New Earth stuff so far.

from wikipedia

In 52 Week 52 (2007), Rip Hunter mentioned that New Earth and Earth-1 are separate
alternate universes

can someone confirm?

Yeah that's a mistake. New Earth is Earth-52

It's a (becoming to common) editorial error. Just accept it as such and ignore it.

I thought the issue was pretty good. I'd still love some sort of Joker ongoing.

Actually, I just checked 52 #52 and it refers to New Earth and Earths 1-51. I don't think I've ever seen New Earth referred to as Earth 52.

How do you calculate the order of the universes? Vibrational frequencies? And from what point?

New Earth has never been referred to as Earth 52 or Earth 1. If this was an editorial mistake in the issue it is pretty crappy error.

52 described there being New Earth and 51 other Earths. I figured New Earth is designated as "zero", followed by 1 through 51 making 52 in total.

I haven't seen New Earth mistakenly referred to as Earth 1 since 52. Does Tangent 1 make New Earth Earth 1???

This is correct. Mainstream DCU is 0, then 1-51.

Now that I think about it, I remember someone last year asked Didio about Earth 1 at a con after the multiverse had been revealed. He said something to the effect of we wouldn't see it until after 2008.

I don't think this is the exchange I was thinking of, but here's a reference: http://www.comicbloc.com/index.php?o...1041&Itemid=56

Better reference: Will we be seeing Earth-1 or any of its heroes in the next year? DiDio: “In the next year? No.”

Didio has stated that we haven't seen Earth-1 yet, and that it would be a big deal once it is revealed, or words to that effect.

Beyond the Earth 1 thing I just want to say that the cover page layout for Tanget was incredibly annoying. Was the original mini like that? All the text and labels running up the binding side made everything feel very cluttered.

Yes, they were layed out like that to make them stand out as being completely different from the DC line (they used those silver, glossy inks on the covers too), and make it seem futuristic. 20X6!!

Though DC 1 Million had a similar layout.

I can't say for certain 100%, but I do seem to remember the cover treatment being odd and sorta ugly to me.

Yeah, the original Tangent books all had that look to them. Whether it's good design or not is debatable, but it certainly made them stand out as being different. The whole idea is that they take place in an alternate universe -- why not experiment with different design conventions? I kind of like the look, at least for a special event design, even though there are practical problems -- putting the logo in the middle instead of at an edge means any cover art is going to get broken in half, and the clerk at my LCS today had to hunt for the price.

Comics.org has the original covers: Tangent Comics

(Incidentally, I love how there's already a 15-post thread on the numbering of the universe, but no one's posted comments on the actual story yet...)

Hey Mr. Igle, Thanks for chiming in!

If the story is taking place on Earth 9 and New Earth, should we consider New Earth and Earth-1 has a same now?
THanks.

I can't confirm that. I don't know if it's a mistake but I doubt it. Nachie is pretty good catching those things.

So you did. My eyes must have slid right past it.

I just found it funny that the first thing that got posted, instead of a review/discussion thread, was all about a number.

Probably because nothing happened in it. The next issue will probably have more meat to it.

I didn't think an error like that would get made either, I mean your only working with two different Earth's, not to hard to keep them straight, especially when the "master list" of all 52 is being so closely monitored... no pun intended.
Thanks again Jamal.
