LARRY STROMAN RETURNS TO X-FACTOR IN JULY
As the artist had previously announced on his website, Marvel.com now has announced that artist Larry Stroman will return as regular artist to the pages of X-Factor with July’s issue #33. Long-time fans will recall that Stroman illustrated the first volume of the series in the early ‘90s, issues #71 - #81: a brief but fondly remembered run.
Stroman and Todd Johnson’s Tribe was one of the creator’s earliest hits – an early Image title which saw its debut issue sell over one million copies.
Stroman recently retuned to comics after a ten year break, during which he taught and worked in design and other areas. The artist’s most recent works at Marvel were What If? X-Men Rise and Fall of the Shi’ar and February’s Black Panther Annual #1.

I owned every issue of Stroman's run... though it wasn't because of his art, but because of Peter David's killer writing. Never cared for his art. Then again, I was kind of immature back then and thought any art that didn't resemble Jim Lee's was crap. I've matured a bit, so I'm happy to see Larry back on the book, if only so I can compare my memories of what was to what is.

Awwww yeaahhhh.....
I think Stroman was one of the few artists who could carry the Sienceiwicz (butchered the sp) torch...expressionistic art. His Quicksilver was the perrenial rendition of the character. And his Guido was on point too.

Looking for a new regular artist, series editor Aubrey Sitterson saw Stroman as the perfect fit for the book: "With a Secret Invasion tie-in, a SHE-HULK crossover, a major change of scenery, and some brand new team members coming down the pike, we wanted a guy like Larry who could knock all this slam bang comicy goodness out of the park—and he's doing just that."

So, looks like as the regular artist...?

Wow. What's next, Alan Davis getting back Excalibur? Uhm, I mean, Captain Britain and MI:13? All kidding aside, should be great to see him back on X-Factor, a real trip back to my youth.

Haven't most of them been killed off over the intervening years?

No, I don't believe any of them were killed off over the intervening years. And even if they were, you know Mr. Sinister probably had replacement clones waiting in the wings somewhere.

Actually you bring up an interesting point. The Marauders in Messiah Complex were mostly clones (obviously not Mystique or Gambit). Riptide says as much when talking to Wolfsbane. Yet when Beast went looking for DNA samples during Endangered Species, all the samples were X-factor-less. Granted, you don't know when the Marauders were cloned, but it's still a little mysterious.
Back to the topic at hand: Larry, you picked one hell of a comic to come back to. Looking forward to it.

You're not. I don't like Stroman's art. I might have to drop this book!

I'm troubled by this, only because I am unfamiliar with Stroman's work and the fact that I LOVE Pablo Raimondi's art!!!

The money from the 90s must of run out. I understand he was paid a million dollars for Tribe #1. I'm pretty sure that's true.
Oh, boy. Why didn't I just become a comic book artist back then?

I don't like his art at all; definitely tips me towards dropping the book (there's so much to buy these days).

big butts
If I remember correctly Stroman brought the unique vision to the X-factor art, especially the Nasty Boys, but did not all the women in the book, especially after looking at Tribe, have big butts and thighs?

That's what was cool about Stroman's art on X-Factor. Each female character in X-Factor had a unique build and thus broke the unspoken rule that all superheroines must have the same figure.
Erik Larsen further expounds on this point:
A decade or more back, Larry Stroman and Todd Johnson came out with a book at Image called "Tribe." Now, I loved "Tribe." It was chronically late and my partners voted to give it the boot because of that but, I was quite fond of the book. I even let the guys borrow my character Savage Dragon when they started up their own publishing company.
One of the cool things about "Tribe" was that it had a diverse cast of characters, mostly black, that looked different from those found in most other comics. Stroman even dared to have a black girl with a big fat ass and in a comic book, that was unheard of. Sure, in reality you see it all the time, but in comics? Never! Black women in comics are built like white women in comics who are built like Asian women in comics. But in "Tribe," that one character dared to be different and I found it refreshing (so much so that I created my own character with a similar build -- maybe we can start a trend).
In the real world people come in all sorts of shapes and sizes and some of them are beautiful and some aren't, but there's an incredible variety there. I'd like to see more diversity in comics and less cowardice. Everybody doesn't have to look like the same boy and girl with slightly different heads. Women can be fat and skinny and busty and not so busty and everything in between. Men can look any number of ways. It's okay for white characters to look white and black characters to look black and Asian characters to look Asian and Latino characters to look Latino and every possible variation.

Met Mr.Stroman and Todd Johnson back when Tribe was being launced, it was my first time talkign to comic creators and was a very memberable moment in my (geek) life. Only surpassed by coincidentaly enough my meeting Erik Larsen, truly all three are awesome guys. I even remember when he was describing the book, that "Tribe is all about women"
That being said, not sure how I feel about him doing X-Factor againthe art was so....dark, not very "4 color" in my opinion
But Tribe sold over a MILLION copies??????? and they still cancelled it after....what 3issues?

Stroman's creative partner, Todd Johnson, joked about how that story has been blown way out of proportion after that Erik Larsen's interview in Comics Journal. You can learn more about when Stroman and Johnson have been in the latest issue of UVC, the one with Brotherman on the cover. (Actually, you should check out UVC anyway since it's easily the best comic fanzine on the stands.)
