NEW AVENGERS #39

Press Release
Taking refuge in Avengers Penthouse, the New Avengers continue to elude Stark’s Mighty Avengers and continue their hunt to weed out Skrull imposters. New Avengers #39 follows Echo as a skeptical Maya Lopez, along with Wolverine riding shotgun, widens her eyes in a shocking revelation about the Skrull infiltration!

Superstar Brian Michael Bendis and award-winning artist David Mack (the man who created Echo) give us the next chapter in the events leading up to the highly anticipated Secret Invasion event! And they bring in a very special guest appearance by a character near and dear to both Bendis and Mack’s hearts!

The New Avengers stand on the precipice of Secret Invasion and their ranks, as well as those of the entire superhero community, are about to be shaken to their very core!

How deep have the Skrulls infiltrated the New Avengers? Could Echo and Wolverine provide more insight to the invasion? All this and an exciting Avenger hookup in New Avengers #39!

Looks good - I for one am happy to see a break from Yu. It comes to a point that there are toooooo many detail lines drawn in.

Did Daredevil punch her in the face? Her nose got really flat from preview page 4 to 5.

Love the book, but for 5 pages...it doesn't really "say" much about anything in terms of current storylines...

Gorgeous art! I only try Daredevil from time to time, but the original Echo arc was one I hunted down a while back (and I love her New Avengers involvement) so I look forward to this issue!

Wow, this looks great. Finally getting some readable art on NA, from David Mack, no less.

Also, I have to say it's nice to have an artist who remembers (for good reason) that Maya shouldn't have double-d's.

There is a art Swiping there. Echo is traced from Adam Hughes Rainmaker. Gen.13-Ordinary Heroes two issue mini.

BWAHAH-AHAHAH!

"...continue to elude the Mighty Avengers..."

Oh please , they've been caught red handed several times by the mighty team and every single time they've been allowed to leave without a fight. Why do they bother even eluding them? Typical New VS Mighty encounter should be like this from now on:

Wolverine crosses the street. Carol Danvers crossed street at the same time.

Logan: "Oh hey , Carol!"
Carol: "Oh Logan."
Logan: "You arresting me today?"
Carol: "Hmmmmmmmm....naah!"
Logan: "Same time tomorrow?"

The first panel of Daredevil, too. Man, that swiping is atrocious. Still, the art does look superb.

I can't even remember if Echo has done anything in the book since killing Skrullektra.

They should make Lenil Yu read this issue so he'd know how to draw comics.

I can't imagine why such a creative individual would need to resort to such plagiarism . . . but there it is.

Wow....I was actually thinking David Mack has improved his storytelling ability.

Marvel, can we get somebody on the Avengers book that can actually draw the characters with an exciting style that is not plagiaristic? For $2.99 a pop, I don't think that's too much to ask.

wow...i would normally never give that kind of discussion too much thought, because i think, with as many comics as have been created over the years, there might be a panel that looks similar but isn't intentional.

but that sequence...wow. that certainly looks like there is reason to be concerned, at the artistic effort.

I disagree. This really looks coincidental to me. It's a fairly common stance (standing up straight, hair in the wind, arms relaxed), and a lot of details are different between the two pictures, even aside from the direction they're facing.

Normally I'd agree. I've noticed that much of what gets posted online in these obsessive "swipe file" message board threads are really just coincidence of lighting and staging of common poses. But given that both of these instances involve a female super-hero of Native American ancestry, I think it's more than a coincidence.

And this is really nothing new for Mack. He's reappropriated poses before in his artwork, both during his DD run and in Kabuki. But since the original images are from pen-and-ink drawings, the fluid, painterly finish of his regular style tends to obscure the similarity. The fact that he's using pen and ink here makes it a little more obvious. Also, if you go back and look at Circle of Blood, the original Kabuki mini/TP (which was done in B&W pen & ink) you'll find many borrowed poses and figures.

BTW, swipe or not, he's a great artist.

So, Echo and Wolverine hook up? Or Echo and Clint?

No, that's a definite swipe.

Similar poses could be coincidental, but look at Rainmaker's and Echo's faces. Exact same profiles, right down to the nose.

Sad. I was about to compliment Mack on some nice artwork.

How about they put Adam Hughes on NA instead?
