GEORGE R.R. MARTIN'S WILD CARDS #1

We brought you the first word of and look at the Dabel Bros. adaptation of George R.R. Martin’s Wild Cards, and now, we’ve got your first look inside issue #1, due in May.

The solicitation for the issue reads:

George R. R. Martin's Wild Cards: The Hard Call #1 (of 6)
Written by Daniel Abraham
Art and cover by Eric Battle
Incentive Cover by Arthur Suydam

In 1946, an alien virus was unleashed that changed the world forever, and people who were affected made their draw. Most drew the Black Queen and died horribly. Almost everyone who survived drew the Joker, and became deformed, broken, hated and feared. But a handful drew the Ace, and gained super powers that allowed them to achieve almost anything the mind can conceive – both in dreams and in nightmares.

Sixty years later, an ace named Croyd Crenson, better known as "The Sleeper," is framed for the murder of a young nurse in Jokertown. And as it turns out, the killer is another ace, with the ability to walk through walls!

Meanwhile a group of teenagers in Colorado accidentally activate the dormant Wild Card Virus, causing the entire town of Whiteoak to experience the effects of the virus. Most draw the Black Queen, but emergency crews will find themselves faced with two people who have drawn the ace…

Set in the world of the long-running series of popular Wild Card novels edited by George R. R. Martin, Wild Cards: The Hard Call is written by Daniel Abraham (author of The Long Price Quartet and the Nebula nominated short story Flat Diane) with art by Eric Battle (DC’s Tales of the Unexpected and Batman) Featuring beloved characters from the original stories, this six issue limited series also introduces us to an entirely new generation of aces and jokers sure to change the Wild Card universe forever!

Looks nice. Think I'll try and track down the missing books before I buy.

Even though I don't buy (nor have I ever bought) the prose books, I really enjoyed the late 1980s/early 1990s Marvel "Wild Cards" mini-series, and I'm going to give this mini a shot.
What I'd like to be reassured about, though, is a matter of timeliness. Will this series actually ship on time or can we expect a series plagued with numerous delays? I'm a bit concerned as this book has already been solicited by Diamond in the current (February, for April shipping) Previews, but the article says "due in May". Also, is this intended to be a monthly book?

Hi BamaRainbow. The May date is a Typo. Issue 1 will be out in April. I can assure you that the series will hit the stands on time. By the time the first issue comes out we will already have 4 or 5 issues completed. Our editorial and production teams are a doing a fantastic job at making sure all of our titles are completed months ahead to assure delivery on time.

Retailers wanting to see a previews of the completed issues can email Derek Ruiz: druiz@dabelbrothers.com to find out how they can obtain advance copies of our comics. Thanks.

Oh wow is this a blast from the past. I had heard of Wild Cards from a friend when I was real young and never could remember the name of the book to track it down. Wow, never thought I'd ever figure it out. Hmm, now I'm not sure if I should go for this or the original book ><

I wonder if this interfaces at all with the new novel series, or is it completely stand-alone?

I can tell you that I'm currently reading (and loving) Inside Straight, which is, iirc, volume 18 in the Wild Cards series. If you can locate a copy, reading at least Volume 1 first will enhance your enjoyment of the comic. I was halfway thru volume 3, when I located volume 2 and ended up reading them both concurrently.

I've never read a Wild Cards story that I DIDN'T like, in any format, in any order. And this new comic mini-series, as described, sounds cool!

To sum it up: Read Wild Cards in every format available! That's what I'm sayin'...

This is jumping to the top of the buy pile, without question. I loved the old Wild Cards series (and just got one of the new books from my bookclub--I'd be reading that as well, but my reading pile is currently higher than a midget's tocchus) and can't wait to see this comic. Bravo!
