FALL OUT BOY TEAMS WITH DABEL BROTHERS FOR COMICS PROJECT

Best known for their literary adaptations, the Dabel Brothers will be taking a step in a new direction later this year as they develop a new project with the band Fall Out Boy. As fans of the band and comics know, drummer Andy Hurley is a lifelong comics fan and frequent convention attendee. Hurley will be heading the project, along with bassist Pete Wentz.

The project was negotiated by Dabel Brother’s Business Director Rich Young who explained the origins of the project to Newsarama, saying: “Les [Dabel] and I had conversation early part of last year when we were brainstorming about new project ideas. I told him that I'd always wanted to work with a popular band that was into comics, and gave him a very short list,” Young says. “Fall Out Boy was on that list and so I started making inquiries.”

Shortly thereafter, the two parties were talking, Young says. And though the publishers are best known for comic book adaptations of fantasy literature such as Laurell K. Hamilton’s Anita Blake and George R.R. Martin’s The Hedge Knight, Young explains that the opportunity of working with Fall Out Boy is something that Dabel Brothers had been looking for.

“Our publishing plan is to continue doing the projects we're known for – working with well-known literary authors, but also to start branching out and diversifying our publishing line up by working with licensors in the music, tv, film, and interactive industries,” Young says, noting that the pairing with Fall Out Boy most likely won’t be the only project they will be doing with a band or musical artist.

The finished project will consist of many stories told over the course of two, perfect bound 56-64 page issues due to hit stores in the third of fourth quarter of this year. As for art, Young says that a collection of artists will be pitching in, most notably, Dan Fraga.

“Dan’s got a relationship with Pete Wentz, and Pete specifically requested him to come on board, so we got him,” Young says. “We're looking at a few other artists as well, as there will be multiple stories. We'd also like to add all the images so far [as seen with this article] were done by Jeremy Treece who has been doing some really great work for us at Dabel Brothers Publishing. He will probably be attached to the project in some capacity.

Young says that the books will ship via Diamond, and that the Dabels are also looking at other avenues to get the book out to the band’s fans. “Whether or not we place additional copies of the issues elsewhere, or do any exclusive editions, remains to be seen,” Young says. “The collection will be distributed via Del Rey/Random House into the bookstore market.

“We'll be putting out another update in the near future with more information on the project, so check back with us on our web site. We think the project has a lot of potential...

“Also, I should mention Rebecca Cairns at Clandestine Industries, who has been absolutely fantastic to work with and a crucial part in getting pretty much of aspect of this project in motion.”

Um

I even like FOB, really I do but....isnt this exactly what everybody feared Gerard Way was doing when he went to comics? I mean - do we need comic books about the wacky adventures of a rock band?

Then again, I'm probably not the target audience. Still, it kinda rubs me the wrong way.

Well after Gerard Way (of My Chemical Romance)'s Umbrella Academy, I guess this was just a matter of time. I met the guys from Fall Out Boy, they're cool. So hopefully this'll be a good comic, and I think they're smart enough business-wise in choosing the Dabel Bros., regardless of whatever the fallout (no pun intended) of their recently ceased partnership with Marvel.

I'll stick to Amazing Joy Buzzards because there's no chance of the actual band glamorizing themselves in any way.

I dunno dudes...

I don't listen to the My Chemical Romance or the Fall Out Boy, but Umbrella Academy is frickin amazing and this looks... dumb. Umbrella Academy leads me to believe that Gerard Way did music to get popular enough to write comics (and really good comics at that!) the same as I believe that Jack Black became an actor so he could promote his fun rock band...

This just reminds me of when a band would guest on Scooby Doo, or when Korn was on South Park...

This is kinda interesting because Peter Wentz, the bassist for the band Fall Out Boy, has freely admitted that they named their band after The Simpsons character Fall Out Boy, sidekick of Radioactive Man. So, now they used Matt Groenig's property twice and across different mediums. I wonder how Mr. Groenig feels about all this?

Err.
So is this just going to be the fun and happy adventures of Fall Out Boy?

I was a bit iffy when I heard of Gerard Way making a comic (I shouldn't have, The Umbrella Academy is absolutely grand), but at least I knew we were at least getting a story, and notsomething about MCR going out for lunch.

Actually he interned at DC before forming MCR, so odds are he'd have come up with his own book sooner or later. Fronting a multi-platinum rock band sure hasn't hurt, though.

Well FOB have been very popular for the past few years and the origins of the name are in every other article about them. I'm certain Groening knows, and if he wanted to sue, he could've done so long ago.

Do they really honestly think anyone will buy this. I mean seriously, Fall Out Boy? They used to have some creditability but now they're just N'sync with guitars. Its bad enough they're allowed to make over produced "music", now they get their own comic. What is this world coming to.

Are you kidding? The people who buy this (provided the distribution is widespread enough) will be Fall Out Boy fans, mostly. Teenage girls amongst them. Who wouldn't normally buy a comic.

Christ, something other than a superhero comic comes out, with mass market potential, and still the negativity prevails.

I can't stand the band. Music's crap, image is manufactured, lyrics are nonsense. But even I think this is a good thing for comics.

If you know how rabid their fans are, then there'll definitely be people buying this. Heck, they might even pick up other comic books while they're in the shop. New readers can't hurt, regardless of how they got their foot in the door. If any long-time comic book readers pick this up, then that's a bonus. Who knows, they might even like it.

Speaking of musician comic book geeks, System of a Down drummer John Dolmayan owns the online store Torpedo Comics. He also has a drumkit featuring original art by 22 artists, including Jim Lee, Neal Adams, Bill Sienkiewicz, Kevin Eastman and Simon Bisley.
