FRACTION, LAROCCA HELM NEW IRON MAN SERIES IN MAY

The question of what will fill Matt Fraction’s writing schedule since The Order is ending with #10 has been answered. According to a new report on Marvel.com, Fraction, along with Salvador Larocca will helm a second, monthly Iron Man series, The Invincible Iron Man

Appropriately enough, the new series will launch in May (Iron Man hits theaters on May 2nd). The solicitation for the new debut issue reads:

THE INVINCIBLE IRON MAN #1
Written by MATT FRACTION
Pencils & 50/50 Cover by SALVADOR LARROCA
50/50 Cover by JOE QUESADA
A bold new ongoing series for the biggest hero of 2008!
IRON MAN! You know you love him! And as the summer's most anticipated movie boot-jets its way into theaters, here's the perfect jumping-on point for new readers and Iron Man fans alike!

Tony Stark – Iron Man, billionaire industrialist and director of S.H.I.E.L.D. – faces the most overwhelming challenge of his life. Ezekiel Stane, the son of Tony's late business rival and archenemy Obadiah, has set his sights, his genius and his considerable fortune on the task of destroying Tony Stark and Iron Man. What's worse, he's got Iron Man tech, and he's every bit Iron Man's equal and opposite…except younger, faster, smarter…and immeasurably evil.

Rising star writer Matt Fraction (IMMORTAL IRON FIST) and superstar artist Salvador Larroca (UNCANNY X-MEN) join forces to repulsor-ray your comic books to a cinder!
32 PGS./Rated T+ …$2.99

Um... can Iron Man support two books? I love Fraction and Larroca, but I didn't think the main title was selling THAT well...

what the heck is marvel thinking, Iron Man can barely support one on-going...and it's not like Fraction is a writer that can sell....

they are just pimp the heck out of him aren't they now.. jumping on the Iron Man movie wagon ...

I suppose if regular folks after watching the movie want to read comics, this is perfect for them.

One book focus on SHIELD and the other one focus on Iron Man.

Woo Hoo!!!

I was going to be stoken on, and read the hell out of, whatever they put Fraction on next - but I wasn't expecting this series in the least and I'm oh so excited.

Fraction's the best, and this will be too

Does Iron Man really merit two monthly solo titles?

This seems really unnecessary, but it's hard to argue with that creative team.

I tend to only read the Anti-Reg comics but I'll do a quick flip through this at my LCBS and if it looks entertaining I'll purchase issu 1, can't promise anything more...

*edit* After reviewing the interior art at Marvel.com the colors seem really breathtaking (and interior colors are usually my biggest pet-peeve in comics) so I'll definitely give it a shot when it hits stores.

Damn, I'm surprised everyone is so against this. And I'm surprised people think Fraction isn't a writer who 'sells'. I can only think of one or two other writers working today that I'd probably read ANYTHING they put out.

It's all about media visibility guys. With the movie being released, it's in Marvel's interest to have more than one Iron Man comic book on the stands, even if it lasts 12 issues only.

If you click the link at the top, there are preview pages at Marvel... And Pepper Potts, looking like she did in The Order, is playing an active role.

Upon reading the marvel.com article, I noticed mention of an interview with the Knaufs later in the week about the future of "Iron Man: Director of SHIELD". If I were a betting man, I'd guess that series is done by the time the dust settles on Secret Invasion.

The solicit is off though as ...

there really isn't a whole lot of difference between Stark and Stane any more. Afaic they
haven't done anything to redeem Stark as a character. Can't blame them for trying to cash in on the movie though. I just wonder if sales on the current Iron Man book really justify a second one.

Hmmm

So then just ongoing Fraction book of fun silly adventure? I'd be into it.

If I'm not interested in the first Iron Man book I'm not gonna be interested in a second.

Maybe someday (when he's a hero again), I'll give a retry.

This is the 4th Iron Man book. Iron Man, The Adventures title, The Ultimate Title.

but if Marvel really wanted to cash in...why choose Fraction?

he's not known for moving units...

We already have an Invincible Iron Man ongoing... or is that Iron Man? or Iron Man: Director of SHIELD?

Maybe Marvel will finally decide what the existing ongoing should actually be called!

Yep. Creative team goodness aside, this ain't gonna last. If Captain America couldn't support a second title when he was arguably selling pretty good back a few years ago (Sentinel of LIberty), then this dahm sure isn't going to last.

Other than the Ultimate Line, Spidey is probably the only really strong seller that can handle multiple books in an ongoing. And they're currently #$(*^&! that up.
