WORD BALLOON: ED BRUBAKER

In this SPOILER FILLED edition of Word Balloon, Captain America writer Ed Brubaker sat down with host John Siuntres and went through the details of the new issue #34, featuring the debut of the new Cap.

If you haven't read the issue yet or don't want the details spoiled, stay away until you do...

But then come back, because they also discuss the release of Criminal Vol 3 from Marvel's Icon imprint, Ed's creator-owned crime comic drawn by Sean Phillips.

Some Criminal info disclosed by Bru...

The next few issues will be a series of one shot stories featuring minor characters from previous arcs.

The article/essays in Criminal's future issues will include an appreciation of EC Comics legendary Crime SuspenStories artist Johnny Craig by Brubaker and Max Allan Collins, as well as an article by crime novelist Duane Swierczynski and an interview with writer Charles Ardai, the editor of the Hard Case Crimenovels.

Brubaker!

Don't go back to the Leo or Tracy well just yet! Do the Jake story first!

Another fantastic Wordballoon, Mr. Siuntres! It's hilarious that Brubaker's a Riddick fan, I can't wait to tell this one guy I know.

Agreed, from an audience perspective. But if you got love for Leo or Tracy just follow it and so will we.

Steve Martin made a comment recently in support of his book that whenever he is asked to give advice to up and coming talents his response is:

"Be so good that they can't ignore you."

I think Bru's writing is an example of this adage in action. His devotion to craft combined with a fan's love for the work of his idols have revitalized interest in the genre and have resulted in some amazing stories.

Great to hear about the ripple effect that Criminal and its back-up commentary has had in other media and in the lives of other creators. It's always encouraging when "lost classics," often experimental, personal, work get to see the light of day.
