FIRST LOOK: DYNAMITE'S BROTHERS IN ARMS

Last June, we brought you word that Dynamite Entertainment had landed the comic book rights to Brothers in Arms, the WWII video game franchise from Gearbox Software, Inc. Dynamite has now confirmed for Newsarama that the first issue of the Brothers in Arms series will ship in April, timed to coincide with the release of Brothers in Arms: Hell’s Highway. The series will be an all-new story based on the game.

For those not familiar with the videogame franchise, Brothers in Arms is based on the true story of the 502nd Parachute Infantry Regiment of the famed 101st Airborne Division who were dropped behind German Lines on D-day. Players assume the role of Sergeant Matt Baker, a paratrooper (based on Harrison C. Summers and various other people), and the leader of an airborne squad from Fox Company. The Brothers in Arms games are a tactically accurate, “first-person shooter” style of game that combine meticulously researched and historically accurate weapons, weather, and environments with the excitement of first-person, “squad level” command in the European Theater during World War II. The missions range from dropping into France on June 6th to the final defense of Hill 30 eight days later.

The publisher has also provided Newsarama with an exclusive first look inside issue #1 as well as the issue’s solicitation information:

With its unprecedented combination of authenticity, compelling story and squad-based action, Brothers in Arms has established itself as a benchmark for military action games, quickly becoming the highest rated WWII action franchise to date. Based on the true stories of the men who served their country so valiantly in World War 2, Dynamite’s all-new comic book series is being developed with game writers David Wohl and Mike Neumann, along with artist Davide (Star Wars) Fabbri!

Issue #1 will be 40 big pages (with 32 pages of story and art) of non-stop action as we pick up with our squad in the events leading up to D-Day! Our story centers around Sergeant Matthew Baker and the role that he plays in “Operation: Overlord,” a.k.a. D-Day. Originally assigned to lead his squad on a mission to recapture the French village of Carentan, Baker’s plans unexpectedly change when his C-47 transport plane is hit by anti-aircraft fire and he’s forced to jump prematurely, along with the rest of his men, who are now scattered across the landing zone. Now Baker must battle fatigue, the elements, and the overwhelming German army, to find his compatriots and continue on his mission to defeat the enemy and help win the war. Featuring two covers, one from interior artist Davide Fabbri and the other from Stjepan Sejic!

I guess I'll have to cross my fingers now for a "Call of Duty" mini-series. Still, I love the artwork (once I saw it, I remembered the star wars books he had done) and I like WWII stories, so I'm in.
