CBLDF, MySPACE HOST Y: THE LAST PARTY ON FEBRUARY 8th
Press Release
On January 30, 2008, one of the most acclaimed comic book series of the last decade, Y THE LAST MAN, concludes with issue sixty. The series and its co-creators, writer Brian K. Vaughan and artist Pia Guerra, have received widespread acclaim, in the New York Times, the Washington Post, Salon and Entertainment Weekly and on National Public Radio's "All Things Considered." To celebrate the end of the series, MySpace Comic Books (http://www.myspace.com/comicbooks), the comic community of the world's most popular social network, and Meltdown Comics, the renowned Los Angeles-based comic book shop, today announced a first-of-its-kind event for the comic book industry: Y: THE LAST PARTY.
Taking place on February 8th at Meltdown, the party is a benefit for the Comic Book Legal Defense Fund and a celebration of the internationally acclaimed comic book series. Joss Whedon will appear in person to toast Y: The Last Man co-creators Brian K. Vaughan and Pia Guerra. All proceeds from this once-in-a-lifetime event will benefit the First Amendment work of the Comic Book Legal Defense Fund (CBLDF). Since 1986, the CBLDF has defended the Free Expression rights of comics booksellers, artists, and educators throughout the United States by funding top legal counsel in criminal cases and leading important education initiatives.
Whedon, the famed creator of Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Angel, and Firefly, will kick off the festivities in Meltdown's Hollywood gallery space with a keynote speech in appreciation of the series. Following the speech will be a live Q&A with guests of honor Vaughan & Guerra. There will also be a VIP Reception prior to the event, with Whedon, Vaughan & Guerra, that will include the unveiling of a never-before-seen print by Pia Guerra.
Y: THE LAST PARTY is made possible by the generous support of sponsors from across the comic book industry: Y: The Last Man publisher Vertigo Comics (http://www.myspace.com/vertigocomics); Dark Horse Comics (http://www.myspace.com/darkhorsecomics); Image Comics (http://www.myspace.com/imagecomics); and Top Cow Productions (http://www.myspace.com/topcow).
Y: The Last Man author Brian K. Vaughan says, "I realize legends like Stan Lee would laugh at the idea of a party being thrown in honor of a couple of kids finishing a mere sixty issues of a comic, but Y has always been a very important story to me, so I really look forward to hanging at my favorite local store with many of the readers and creators who made this journey possible, especially when it all supports the essential work of the Comic Book Legal Defense Fund."
Capacity for this event is strictly limited to 140 people. VIP reserved seating tickets are $100 and available now through the CBLDF's MySpace profile (http://www.myspace.com/cbldf). VIP tickets include entrance to the reception, and a limited edition print of brand new artwork by Guerra, signed by Guerra and Vaughan. There are only 70 VIP tickets available, so act fast to guarantee your admission. Additionally, 70 general admission "standing room only" tickets for the event will be $25, and are available on a first-come, first served basis on the day of the event.
More information and updates on Y: The Last Party can be found on the Comic Book Legal Defense Fund's MySpace profile (http://www.myspace.com/cbldf).

Ditto!
I would totally pay/donate $$$ to hear a podcast or watch a dvd of this event.
GREAT JOB to BKV and Pia Guerra, your work on YTLM was amazing and this brilliant title will sorely be missed!!! Another legendary title joins the ranks of Vertigo's greats...

It's so sad to see it end, but it was one of those books that had to have an ending. Vaughn rocks! I haven't read anything by him that hasn't completely floored me. One of the most underrated writers in comics. This guy should be getting the same acclaim Bendis, Millar, and Whedon have been getting cause quite frankly he's more talented than all three combined.

He does get a lot of acclaim. Form inside and outside comic book circles. I think he's not as "well known" or "beloved" as the men you mention because he doesn't have a high profile book. The reason for that? He does a lot of creator owned stuff and he's branching out with television shows and movies. Ask BKV if he'd trade places with Millar or Bendis, and I think the answer would be "no."

when's the last issue actually going to be out? personally, i've been pretty disappointed with the direction the book has gone in ever since the team met up with Dr. Mann's father. it's been downhill ever since, especially including the huge loss of a key character (if you read this series by single issues, you know who i'm talking about). i used to feel like this book was monumental, but now it just feels like a tragic farewell.

It was supposed to ship a few weeks ago. I'm tired of all the lateness - I'm dropping the book.

...I too would love to be there. Especially to remind Pia that she promised pix of her in goosestepper boots and fishnets back when the series first arrived . However, I will add my name to the list of those who were somewhat put off by the change to a "bimonthly" schedule", as well as the lateness of the final issue. I was actually having flashbacks of the long, still-never-explained delay between the final two issues of Camelot 3000, and feared that something similar had happened.
...Regardless, it's been a fun ride. Granted, there's about ten different storylines that Bryan and Pia could have pursued - say, a trip to Africa or South America, anyone? - but it's still been one fun ride! A whole lot more fun than I Am Legend was!
