Which 2008 Comic Book Event Are You Most Looking Forward To?
In just a month or so Marvel and DC will begin to solicit their highest-profile 2008 comic book events of the year - DC's Final Crisis by Grant Morrison and JG Jones, and Marvel's Secret Invasion by Brian Bendis and Leinil Yu. So this weekend's Newsarama Reader Poll is a decidedly simple and straight-forward one - which of these events are you most looking forward to?
There isn't a lot of nuance this time around ...it’s a one or the other proposition.
As always, all readers con participate and registered members can stick around and discuss the findings..

Grant Morrison + JG Jones vs something written by Bendis.
Easy choice: Final Crisis.

Morrison vs. Bendis, the battle of who can throw together the better event! As much as I love Morrison, I went with Secret Invasion, mainly due to the amount of prep-time that Bendis has put into the event (Starting from what, the beginning of New Avengers?) while Morrison was handed the project that had to come after Countdown.
I do, however, plan on picking up both, as sad as my wallet is. =(
Bah, second post!

I don't like Bendis anymore since two or three years. I positively hate Yu. Grant Morrison is pure, undiluted genius. You would have to be a Marvel Zombie to choose Secret Invasion (plus frankly it started badly already)

In terms of the core superhero universes, I'm currently a much bigger Marvel fan than DC. I read very little DC at the moment, and have been finding it extremely difficult to get into a lot of what they're doing now without having to buy numerous tie-ins while having a PhD in DC Continuity. Whereas Marvel has been smooth sailing, and I like the fact that they don't mind ignoring continuity for the sake of telling a good story.
But, saying that, the creative team behind Final Crisis is just too much to resist! Also, for some reason, I'm actually believing DC when they say that you won't have to buy tie-ins for this event (even though they said something along the same lines for Infinite Crisis, and look how that turned out). But, if this turns into a convoluted mess like so much of DC's other events lately, they will find it very hard to get my interest for any future events no matter the creative team behind it.

I can't trust DC to leave Morrison alone and let him tell his own big epic, espically after DC's recent transformation into editoral driven continuity porn. I want to look forward to it, but after what DC has doen to all their over big events, I just can't.
Secret Invasion, on the other hand, has an interesting premise and Bendis and Yu work great together. I don't think it'll be some sort of Marvel Classic (although, you never know ) but I do think it'll be enjoyable.

If you read the interviews from Dan and JG, it sounds like DC is catering more to a story that Grant has had for decades, and he's finally going to be able to tell it. Its becoming more and more that DC was just prepping its universe so Grant's story can be in continuity.
And besides, Morrison is only second to Geoff Johns in continuity wanks. The only difference between the two is that Morrison reinvents characters and concepts while Johns reintroduces them.

I'm a bit 'meh' on JG Jones' pencils, and since I know exactly nothing about the plot of Final Crisis, I'm going with Secret Invasion. Could change as it goes on, but after being underwhelmed by the lat two Crises, I'm putting my faith in Bendis.

Yes, the "One More Day" approach to continuity is so much better.

I've never felt DC like I do Marvel and what's going on now with the Skrulls is more interesting to me then another Crisis. Secret Invasion for me.

You forgot the neither option. Personally, I am done to death with these never ending events after events from the big two and will be skipping both and any other event that these events spawn.

I loved Infinite Crisis it was my first proper DC event. I suspect most DC purest may be skeptical about Final Crisis because of Infinite Crisis, I don't know why, I loved it. But then I could only compare Infinite Crisis to House of M (its direct Marvel competitor) and any way and at any angle you want to look at it, as far as big, multiple character, major events go Infinite Crisis was better than House of M (with the exception sales probably - but that's not nearly a quality thing with major events and more a company character popularity thing).
Ok Geoff Johns isn't writing Final Crisis (to me that's like God not doing his seven day thing...) but Bendis is writing Secret Invasion and I'm of the thought that Bendis, while a great writer when it comes to focusing on solo characters and solo titles, isn't as good (too the point of simply cannot) at writing team books and that transcends into major events that have multiple characters and demands scope/large scale. New and Mighty Avengers (especially) seem to lack any scope beyond themselves and Shield and are devoid of any indication of an ongoing sub plot beyond Skrulls. House of M was the same, it just didn't exude the scale that a major event needs especially compared to previous works by other writers - Even Messiah Complex 'feels' bigger and has more tension than HoM and Messiah Complex is self contained within the X-verse, whereas HoM involved Avengers and X-men and was fundamentally a battle for the Planet Earth.
For me Morrison is proven at being able to write extremely successful large scale books with lots of characters, who may or may not be pulling at the same strings or heading in the same direction according to the plot.
Also, then there is the decompression, I'm almost certain that Secret Invasion will 'feel' like 3 issues too long because there will be 2 - 3 issues, where nothing really happens, and those issues could have been folded into one issue and I'm not a fan of that.
If any one else was writing Secret Invasion it may have got my vote, but because Morrison is writing Final Crisis and the type of book Bendis is writing my money and vote will go to Final Crisis.
Edit: With more thought on this, I'm not a fan of the events that have led to Secret Invasion, one day Cage said (paraphrased) "something weird is going on". A few years later, Electra ends up being a Skrull and Cage says "that something going on that was weird, it's the Skrulls". Next we have Secret Invasion. All this Skrull's on Earth, seems to be more apparent amongst the fandom and its own speculation than what is actually being shown in the comics. It feels forced.

Oh God...
...I'm a Marvel fan by nature, 80% of my pull list is Marvel, almost all my favourite books are Marvel...
...but I';m not a Skrull-fan and Final Crisis looks like it will kick Secret Invasion's ass.
Still, I'm gonna buy both, so that's what I voted.

DC has its Crises; Marvel has its Secrets. Next cross-over event: Secret Crisis.
Anyway, DC has been putting what I want to read far more than Marvel. So sticking strictly with Final Crisis.

My vote's for Secret Invasion. I'm looking forward to Final Crisis simply because Seven Soldiers showed me what Morrison can do when he aims for 'blockbuster' (in his own unique way), but I don't actually care about the component pieces - the multiverse can become a megaverse or fold up into a postage stamp for all I care, so long as it doesn't muck up JSA, and I honestly don't give a rat's about the Fourth World. While I don't much like Yu's art, Secret Invasion is about a world I'm invested in - I want to know what happens to Iron Man and SHIELD and the Initiative and the Illuminati and all that jazz. Sight unseen, that gives it the edge - whether Bendis can use it well enough to trump Morrison's raw talent remains to be seen.

I would be more excited by Secret Invasion if it had a better artist. Yu makes everybody look like a Skrull already. Still, I will be buying both because I have very little self control.
