AMAZING SPIDER-MAN #546 SELLS OUT, 2nd PRINTING COMING

Press Release
Marvel is pleased to announce that Amazing Spider-Man #546, beginning the landmark Brand New Day storyline, has sold out at Diamond (though copies may be available at the retail level). Written by the friendly neighborhood dream team of acclaimed writer Dan Slott (Avengers: The Initiative) and superstar penciller Steve McNiven (Civil War), and kicking off the thrice-monthly shipping of Amazing Spider-Man, this issues launches a bold new era for Peter Parker as he must confront the new criminal elements, new threats…and search for a new job!

To meet the overwhelming demand for this issue, Marvel is going back to press with Amazing Spider-Man #546 Second Printing Variant, with a new cover featuring the spectacular interior art of Steve McNiven!

“As the controversial first issue of a new era for Spidey, Slott, McNiven and everyone else involved hit this one out of the park,” said editor Steve Wacker. “Love it or hate it, everyone's takling about Spider-Man.”

ComicBookResources.com’s Augie De Blieck Jr gushed that Slott is, “the perfect writer for a Spider-Man book,” a sentiment echoed by SilverBulletComicBooks.Com’s Dave Wallace, declaring Brand New Day, “a reinvigoration of the Spider-Man mythos and a return to the classic roots of the character.”

Marvel urges retailers to check their orders on all issues of Amazing Spider-Man, as the series continues to receive high profile coverage from Newsweek, Yahoo.Com, People Magazine, USA Today, The New York Daily News and more!

Now that Amazing Spider-Man ships thrice monthly, it’s three times the amazing, three times the action and three times your favorite super hero!

Keep checking the new Spider-Office blog at http://www.marvel.com/blogs/Spider-Office for images and information you won’t find anywhere else!

What that a comic that has a major impact on a major character would sell out?

Despite all the bitching that goes on here, Newsarama posters are still a minority among comic-book readers.

What can't you believe? That they are re-printing a comic? That this sold-out? Is it really that surprising?

You do know that Dan is only one of three writers. He will only be writing three issues a month every three months.

I know that this cannot be a basis of how this will do 3 months from now but this makes me very happy

This really doesn't mean anything. Shops preorder far in advance, and I've heard people saying their local shops still have tons of copies on the shelves. All this means is that every order Marvel printed hit the shelves, not that everybody that walked into a comic shop bought it.

OK, so then why would Marvel do a second printing if the retailers aren't asking for it? Does Marvel just like to kill trees?

Congrats to the whole BND team, and Joe Q as well. I'm loving the new direction and hope it sticks.

Retailers buy. We'll find out what the fans buy when they release the monthly sales charts.

For the press release that lets them trumpet the "success" of the book. The second printing will still be print-to-order. So shops with variant cover hunters and ones that underestimated demand will buy a few copies.

Expect 547 and 548 to sell out as well, as it is trivial for Marvel to manufacture a sell-out of any book that they want to.

(And for the record, I'm guessing 100k sales on 546, dropping to 80k by 548).

This one's for Snowspinner:
Wanna wager on those numbers? Seriously. If you want to take me up on it, I'll bet you #546 sells over 100k and 548 sells over 80K. Money where your mouth (or in this case, keyboard) is. If you're right, out of my own pocket I'll get you 3 subscriptions to any Marvel books of your choice. If you're wrong, you have to subscribe to AMAZING SPIDER-MAN for a year. I'll tell you right now, it's a sucker-bet. But what do you say? Do you accept?

Hated OMD - Really liked this issue. Hated that I liked it, but I did

Either way, this will help Marvel tout the book as a "success". It "sold out", so the vocal majority apparently bought the book ( i didn't, thank GOD), and this will fuel Joe's rant about how the "fanbase doesn't know what the want".

Still, a sellout in just under a week isn't really that spectacular. Hulk #1 had a second printing announced 2 days after it's debut...far more impressive than a week.

edit: Not to say that it wasn't a good issue....it was, I just don't care for the new status quo.

Hm...HULK #1 sold out in two days while AMAZING SPIDER-MAN #546 sold out in six.

And what will happen to ASM when the controversy/curiosity factor wears off?

To Dan Slott...

I'll take your bet - kind of. How about this:

4 months from now, I'll subscribe to Spider-Man if it has managed to keep itself above 80K copies per issue. If not, how about just a little bit of public humiliation or apologies in the way of an "Ode to me" from Dan Slott?

Sucker bet, man. Obviouisly since ASM has legs it should be well above 80K per issue right?

This just means store owners bought too many. You can still find them on the shelves.
