Far as the marriage goes? Spidey and MJ? Married long as I've been reading Spider-Books, so this upsets me. Deeply.

The unmasking was already partly undone in an issue of Initiative. The Spidey Corps had his back on that one. And I thought that was lame...

To answer the question posed in this thread:
I am horribly disgusted by this decision, and I just had Amazing Spider-Man removed from my pull list. My money will not be supporting this garbage.
That is all.

Dumbest thing, hands down, I've heard ANYONE say at ANYTIME on Newsarama threads. You must be a twelve year old writing on the 'net as if you're 18 or something.
I'll be 34 in February. So I got, what, a good year or two to enjoy my comics and then I can't go see anymore Batman movies? Can't read anymore more stories by my favorite writers or artists?
At this stage of my life, I have a passing interest in comics (not as rabid as when I had less responsibility and more cash to blow on whatever), but I still like the characters, especially when they're done right. And I really can't stand when they're mishandled for the worse.
Spidey's an icon. You don't have to have him on your pj's to like him. But for someone my age, you DO have to write him and treat him in respect to his background well.
And Joe Q. just messed that one all up for another round.

Of course, we could also try to figure out how all this fits with what is apparently God showing Peter his future in Sensational Spider-Man 40, where he's together with MJ again anyway... and nary a reference to this immediately thereafter in OMD.

His CBR interview pretty much seals the matter. He wants this to be permanent. The problem is, no matter how wrong he is and how woefully selfish and shortsighted he's being, he's got enough loyal fanboys behind him to make this stick. And Wizard's been parroting the "comic book marriage = bad" card almost since its inception, with both Spider-Man and Superman as its poster children for characters who shouldn't be married or have stable love lives. They're going to pimp this as the greatest thing since sliced bread.
As horrible as this is, it's here to stay.

But to destroy a well established partnership between Peter and MJ cause the EIC hated it is way low. The fact that he drew it adds salt to the wound. But I'll probably see how the first arcs of the Brand New Day era start and go from there.
As is at least I don't have such issues with Nova (yet); just good stories, good art and good old fashioned non-ret-coned superhero goodness once a month and not a JQ in sight.

It just occured to me, OMD stands for Oh My Devil! They were trying to tell use what was going to happen from the very start.

1. OMD sucked, but I don't get the Joe Q hate. He's done way more good than harm as EIC.
2. The argument the we already have a young unmarried Spidey in Ultimate and Marvel Adventures is pointless. We also have a married mature Peter in Spider-Girl.
3. Now that this OMD crap is over, can we finally get back to fighting supervillains? How about supervillains named Venom?
4. Carnage is also acceptable. Goblins need not apply.
5. Does Deadpool still have those Gwen Stacy clones? Seems like Pete could use 'em now.
6. Since were rebooting and resurrecting right and left, can Joe hook up us 90's guys with some Ben Reiley?
7. Does no more MJ mean no more Dunst in the movies? If so ,all is forgiven.

JMS Tribute
What did you folks think of the glowing tribute to JMS that came at the end of a book that seems to have pretty much negated his run?

One of the things I fail to understand about a need to return to status quo is the Marvel Adventures Line and the Ultimate Spider Man series. Both titles cover that field fairly well.

This has gotta suck for JMS to write (co-write?) an issue that basically makes the last six years of his work null and void.
On the plus side, it also takes care of a lot of other problems with Spidey over the years. Clone Saga? Never happened now. Basically most of the crappy stories of the 90's are now wiped clean.
I will say this: the last part of the issue was the first time in many years I recognized the Spider-man that I grew up with.
I don't like the means, but I absolutely love the ends.

I turned 40 this year myself. Funny thing, my ability to enjoy comics -- even (and especially at the moment, as they're both better than most of the stuff in "616") Marvel Adventures and Power Pack -- is neither impaired by, nor impairs, my ability to enjoy Dante, Beowulf, or Spenser. Indeed, I'd even say they enhance one another to a degree -- having learned of the traditional notion of literature (broadly, not merely the stuff you have to read in school) as something meant to "instruct and delight," I can take a step back and say that if not only a given novel, but a given comics series, neither sheds new light on human nature or other things, nor gives real reading pleasure, then it is a waste. (Which is why I'm giving Dan Slott's run the old college try; I expect good things from him. I hate the backdrop of the current MU, but his Avengers: The Initiative is making very good points about that backdrop, for instance.) I can enjoy stories of light-hearted heroism; I can enjoy dark, tragic stories which make important points to chew on; but dark stories which have no decent point to make have nothing left to attract me.
Which is actually kind of why I don't want to boycott the BND Spider-Man; if it's going to actually get Spidey back to being a less miserable character than he's been the last year or two, fighting bad guys but upholding the principles of heroism, and this becomes popular, it could send a signal to Marvel that maybe that's a better path to tread than, well, the last few years of dreck. I want him and MJ back together, absolutely, but I also want a non-fascist Tony Stark, a non-amoral Reed Richards, a Logan devoted to honor despite his struggles with his feral side, and so on. Right now the only source for these "classic" interpretations of the characters -- arguably more "real" (i.e., more following the way they've been portrayed since their creation -- a continuity of spirit, if not of events) than the last few years of ghastly mischaracterization -- is in Marvel's All-Ages books. I'd love to see it in the "mainstream" line again as well, and I want to send that message, so if I bought the depressing crap but don't buy the more light-hearted stuff, it will send precisely the opposite message than the one I want to send.
I do agree with the folks pointing out that continuing to buy books you don't enjoy is a bit of a fool's errand, and sends the message "Hey, Marvel/DC! Put out any dreck you want, we'll buy it! And all the crossovers you tell us are 'required reading!'" But I don't "need" to know "what happens next" if it sucks. I bought books years ago because they were "important events" for the characters, and hated them, and now those "important events" (and some good ones) have been thankfully brushed under the rug. I think I've finally learned: After being burned by Disassembled, House of M, Decimation, Civil War, Silent War, and World War Hulk, I've resolved, however tempted I may be, to not bother with Secret Invasion. I'm sure all I "need" to know will be covered in the few books I buy. I don't care what happens to the Fantastic Four after McDuffie leaves. I'm not interested in what happens to Iron Man right now at all. Messiah Complex -- despite boxes and boxes of X-Men-related books -- has no charms for me. I do have faith that, eventually, it will all get back to normal, because I don't think the average reader enjoys reading about a fascist dystopia on a regular basis. (Occasional visits, like the Days of Future Past universe, can be good in small doses, just not a steady diet.) And until then I can drop all the Marvel books I don't enjoy, and it won't do me a bit of harm. I don't need a "complete collection" of any series at all, certainly not at the price of the comics I could be reading which I will enjoy, not to mention other pursuits.

Considering JMS disowned this story, I think it was a backhanded slap in the face. It was Quesada's final "I own you" show before JMS left.
The last time I felt this insulted was when DC had Lois emotionally abusing Superman because they wanted to back out of marrying them (until WB made them toe the line) and later because they wanted to undo the marriage. Again, it was the same thing; the creators argued that they didn't want to write about a married lead character and that marriage was inherently a bad thing. Now it's Spider-Man's turn. Only this time there's no chance of Marvel backtracking, as DC eventually did by hiring writers who felt the marriage was worth developing. They're going to seek out Quesada-puppets and that's that. I don't see Spider-Man recovering from this.

But I suppose there must be some alternate universe origin I'm not aware of where teen Peter was offered a deal to keep his uncle alive.
Me, I see it this way. Ben's death caused the guilt which fueled Peter's heroism, since he should have stopped the crook responsible for it. May dying because of Peter's bad choices would just be the final straw. A human being, which Peter is, can only take so much. I absolutely felt the power when Straczynski wrote Peter telling Mary that it would just be too much for him, that it would break him.
But that's just me. I like good writing.
|
To me that just shows that Peter didn't understand the vows he took For getter or for Worst and let know man come between them. Basically he put his own feelings above his wife's feelings, which he pretty much guilted her and made her feel like crap to make her go along with his weak ass. And here I thought Woman was the one that took a bite out of the Apple, I guess the Devil went the other way this time.
What makes it worst through all of this is, Mephisto just got himself a free soul for nothing. What do I mean. Well, if Mary and Peter's daughter was indeed born and died, that means that her soul, rather than going to heaven (since we're talking about the Devil here) I went no where, since in the recon he provided she was never techincally born. They just basically gave poor May Parker to Mephisto for zip. So not only is Peter now the Husband of the year, he's also the Father of the year. Man, May better not slip on any ice or mix up her meds cause she owes them big time.
