WORD BALLOON: GEOFF JOHNS

On this episode of Word Balloon DC writer Geoff Johns and host John Siuntres catch up with a big picture look at the characters and story arcs playing out in Action Comics, Justice Society Of America, Booster Gold and Green Lantern.

We'll discuss Geoff's takes on the multiple versions of Superman, the Legion of Super-Heroes, the new heroes and villains in the Sinestro Corps War, and finding a new purpose for Booster Gold.

You'll also hear Geoff's thoughts on the WGA strike and some never realized season 2 story ideas for the Blade TV series, including a plot featuring Marc Spector, Moon Knight.

Some other tidbits from the interview...

Johns has Green Lantern plotted through to issue #55, JSA to #25 or longer, and Action Comics - "if we stay the course, Gary [Frank] and I have two years of stories to tell."

On Green Lantern: "That book with its epic scope... to bring Hal Jordan to issue #50 has become a very personal story for me."

On Superman Prime: "He's absolutely one of my favorite characters to write. he's such a jerk (laughs)."

On the future : Johns and former Blade TV/JSA collaborator David Goyer have a new comic story idea they hope to release in early 2009.

I'm listening to this-- so glad he's going on from the Baxter Legion before 5-year gap because that's the Legion I've been wanting to see.

Issue #55? Looks like he's not planning on leaving GREEN LANTERN anytime soon, but nothing about how long he's staying on BOOSTER GOLD?

Yeah, after reading Booster Gold #2 and #3 yesterday, I was kinda hoping we'd hear something about how long can we expect the title to last or Johns to stay with it. I'm a big fan of the direction he's going in and right now it might be favorite pull.

He's said in other interviews and blogs he's staying on Booster till at least #15 as he's having too much fun with it.

Geoff sounds like such an awesome, enthusiastic guy. I love all his comics and hope he continues to entertain us, especially on Green Lantern, for years to come. I also hope him recruiting all this new talent means he'll help get me a break and that we'll have some decent successors to him once his runs are done on all his various books. I don't wanna see another book go the way of The Flash after he left.

Uh-oh....the interview cut of at 43 minutes. Hopefully the corrected file will be posted when I get home.

Great interview as always John. It's funny, but until Katers reffered to SBP as a "fanboy" I never caught on to it.

Having Geoff confirm this is great. SBP just moved into my top 5 favorite characters.

Just wanted to say that I love Geoff's work. Every other comic he writes is just plain old comic book fun, well ploted, great dialogue, fantastic cliffhangers, a joy to read, all in all.

And thank you Matt. I've seen in the past where people have asked (some rudely demanded) you to show the highlights of the interviews as some of us could not listen to them. Thanks for the response and keep up the great work. And thank you Geoff for the passion and hard work you show us each and every month

I've never downloaded a Word Balloon before...my connection's too slow but I tried it today. Very interesting. Like others have said, Geoff Johns is a great guy who's passion for his work really shines through not only in the comics he writes but in every interview he does. One of the best (Top 4, and to hint...the other three already worked with him on a weekly book) writers in superhero comics today.

Anyway...I heard a lot of things that made me happy...

1.) He's on GL until at least 55. Another 30 issues which means he'll probably not only deal with Blackest Night but also the aftermath/fallout from that. Excellent.

2.) He's on Justice Society until at least 25. Man...I hope he stays MUCH longer than that. Justice Society is one of my favorite comic books, hands down.

3.) He has more Titans stories in him. The book really hit its stride OYL and I'd love to see him come back one day.

4.) He's on Action Comics for at least another two years...and so is Gary Frank.

Also....having read Countdown #24 before listening to this interview, Superboy Prime being the angry fanboy makes TOTAL sense to me now and I can't believe it went over my head until today. Wow. Guess we all have dense moments.

As soon as I finished listening I started calling him Fanboy Prime and it just fits so well.

Yeah I totally get you. I mean, gosh. Why didn't he ask some more "hard-hitting" questions in this interview, like, "Can your stories get anymore awesome than they already are???" (The answer to this by the way is, "Yes, when Johns gets to his first Earth-2 and Legion stories.")

Chill, dude. He was interviewing one of the best writers in comics today, so naturally he was excited. What did you expect?
