MARVEL REVEALS "NEW" CAPTAIN AMERICA

Marvel promised a reveal of…something today at noon – something to do with Alex Ross. Their only news announcement of the week.

Speculation has ranged from something involving Captain America (Ross is one of the creative forces behind Avengers/Invaders coming next year from Marvel) to possibly Marvels 2 and…well, really back to Captain America.

As for the reveal? Looks like those betting on Captain America were right.

But what…or who is it? One thing that Marvel makes clear - it's not Steve Rogers. He's still dead....

Winter Soldier? Punisher? Nomad back from the dead? Alternate reality Steve Rogers? Someone new entirely...

Interesting...but it's weird seeing Cap with a gun

Too... shiny...

I miss the scalemail already.

Cool! He's got a gun!

I don't really like this design, but if Bru's involved, it'll at least be fun to read.

I really don't like the design. Too shiny, the black is a very stark contrast between the other colors. Needs work.

Otherwise I'm looking forward to the book

Nice design. I like how they incorporated the triangular shield into his costume.

Gonna go on record here (and possibly against the crowd) and say I really like the new design. They didn't go crazy with it (the mask is pretty much kept intact, which is the most important part) but it does seem modernized without compromising the "feel" of Cap. As for who's in the suit, who knows, but from a design standpoint I really like it. There have been far worse costume redesigns.

*yawn*

I am enjoying Brubaker's run on Captain America, and will continue to buy it, but really - let's stop pretending Steve Rogers isn't coming back, Marvel. Even if you debut a whole new Captain America, in the end, given time, Steve Rogers will be Captain America again. Just like Magneto and Xavier were inevitably going to be mutants again, just like Jean Grey will come back from the dead again, just like the Parker marriage will eventually return. The status quo is an inevitability of superhero comics.

Honestly, I'd be just as excited if the reveal just read "Alex Ross. Ed Brubaker. Nuff said."

Had to happen eventually. I like the idea and with Bru and co. I have complete faith it will be a good read. With Epting involved on the design, sounds like he is staying on the book.

Not to crazy about the shiny armor part of the costume though.

So does that mean Tony Stark will give Cap's shield to a gun carring defender of liberty or do they remake the shield for the new Cap?

Any guess this could tie into Morrell's Chosen storyline?

looks good

but

i hate time travel. time travel better not be how they're bring cap back. it just never makes sense if you think about it too much.

Interesting variation on the classic look. Don't really like how prominent the gun is in every shot, but if it is done for a story reason, it's fine. The first image is great; love the shine on Cap. I don't think that Bru is the comic god that it seems everyone else does, but his Cap work is great.
Ross has a lot of public opinions in the past that irked me (his public interview about Andreyko's outing of Obsidian, saying that it was out of nowhere and he felt Geof Johns put him on the JSA to protect him, when Obsidian's sexuality had been questionable for years), but there is no denying that he has a great design sense, especially when updating classic looks.

Sure looks like Bucky's Getting the Mantle . . .

Gun and Knife, plus black to accentuate "darker" person/tactics/mourning - sure seems to indicate Bucky. Left arm is completely covered anyway, so no telling cyber-prosthetic.

Metallic sheen of the tunic = new kind of body armor?

The whole storyline in Cap is building to a Bucky/Stark confrontation. We all know Buck ain't gonna kill Tony, so how much you wanna bet that said confrontation ends with generic "If I kill you that's not what Steve would have wanted", etc. and Tony agrees and gives him the costume?

Just my guess, but would be very surprised to see it turn out differently . . .

Interesting. I'll stick with Bru because he has earned my trust over the first 25+ issues of the series. I don't really like Cap eith a gun and knife though.

I';d love to see about a year of John Walker/Bucky interaction.

Also,

The Silver Agent wouldn't use a gun unless he really, really had to.

If this means a mini, I don't like it; but if it means that Bucky (check the gun and the combat knife) is going to become the next Cap on the regular title, that is another thing...that could be really interesting.

In Bru, I trust.

So, I'll stay with it, be it Bucky, a clone, a time travelling Steve Rogers, or a Skrull....
