JOE FRIDAYS: ONE MORE DAY SPECIAL
Newsarama Note: Summer and this Spider-Man gig Joe's doing with JMS have wreaked havoc on everyone's schedules, so, with the con season over, and calmer (hey, we can hope) fall days on the horizon, we're working with Joe to get Joe Fridays back on a regular schedule. We're all still very committed to it, so bear with us as we all work out a few more kinks to come back Mightier...er...more Astonishing...um...more Uncanny...hm...Invincible than ever. In the meantime, we spoke with Joe about the start of One More Day.
Newsarama: Joe - before we get rolling, just wanted to get your feelings on one of the sadder events of the past few weeks - losing Mike Wieringo. There's a Hero Initiative gathering this week - you going to be at it?
Joe Quesada: Yes, I will absolutely be at the event. I know it’s been said before but losing 'Ringo at such an early age and without even an inkling that something like this could happen to such a healthy guy, has been a huge shock to me and everyone here at Marvel as well as the comics’ community. As an artist, Mike’s work was the kind that I would look at and marvel because of the economy of line and the beauty of the simplicity of it. He was just outstanding. You couldn’t help but smile when you read a book drawn by Mike.

Always nice to hear Joe talk about his art. He 's way too talented to waste away behind a desk for the rest of his career

Hm, he shoulda drawn the black costume
1)wouldn't have messed with continuity as much
2)would have been easier for him to draw.
but
a)wouldn't have been as marketable I guess
b)it is dope to see JQ draw more regular spidey

I love what Quesada does with Dr. Strange - this pages along with the stuff from his Daredevil run just shows how much he 'gets' the character. The pages are always fully psychedelic pieces of artwork. Brilliant. As much as I'm looking forward to the story of OMD, it's Quesada's art that's got me pumped.

I like his style on this a lot. It's nice and smooth and immersive. Shame on all you people that called Peter a muppet!

I HATE HIM I HATE HIM I HATE HIM I HATE HIM I HATE HIM I HATE HIM I HATE HIM I HATE H
I can't stand how arrogant he is. I challenge any writer to make Spiderman good without having to go backwards. I'm married, I love it and the thought of having to change that to make my life more interesting is gross and wrong!!!
C'MON!

The main problem I have with putting Aunt May in peril is that she's already died. More than once.
Okay, so the final versions of those stories may have included things saying that she never really died, but the stories at the time were "The Death of Aunt May." The box for my 40 years of Amazing Spider-Man actually lists an issue as "The first time that Aunt May dies." So it's a little hard for me to feel like she's in any real danger. She'll pop back up sooner or later.

You know that Joe's married too and probably feels the same way, right?
I mean, I'm against ending the marriage but I can see the point of view that he and the current regime at Marvel - and a lot of creators, it seems - have; I don't agree with it personally but its a valid choice.
P.S. Gob reference always welcome.

Yes, it's always good to HATE someone for something that they haven't done and there is no proof that they are definitely going to do. That's definitely the clear headed and mature way to react.
And, even if it does happen, how about we see how the story develops. Spidey has had a LOT of horrible things happen to him, but in a lot of ways that's life. Gwen dying still haunts him and the book would've been happier if she never did. But she did. Let this story play out first. If the marriage is over but happens in a dramatic and powerful way for the character, it could be a really good story, whether we like the decision or not. Because, again, I guarantee that NOBODY liked it when Gwen died. Don't be such a Phil Sheldon.

So, what's the release schedule for OMD (or, as I like to call it, OMG!)? Brand New Day doesn't start until December. Are we only going to get one installment per month, even though it's spread over the three different titles?

Say whatever you want about Joe Quesada the EIC, but Joe Quesada the artist is a wonderful talent in this industry. I love his panel layouts. Here's a guy who always strives to do something different with his art, and I gotta say, it should be celebrated.
There are times I wish Breevort would take over the EIC chair and we could have Joe, the artist, back. Even this Joe Friday's, with him just talking about his art, was so much more refreshing than the usual spin cycle.

I see your maturity and raise it.
Not only do I agree that we should see if it's a great story despite our disagreement with whatever decision it makes come to fruition, I will AGREE with whatever decision they make if it's done in a dope way.
Just like with Gwen. If 'the night gwen stacy died' was a bad story, I'd still be screaming "bring back gwen!" But it was a great story whose conclusion I agree with BECAUSE it was such a good story.
If they end the spider-marriage in an utterly brilliant way (and I've seen utter brilliance from quesada's art and JMS' writing) then I'm not only approving of the story but the conclusion it brings us.

You know, I don't have any rationale behind it, or an explanation how it works, or anything of the sort...
but I am starting to think that it is Peter who dies at the end of OMD.
Huh.

Yeah, I definitely prefer Joe Quesada the artist to Joe Quesada the EIC. I know the odds are basically a condensed sphere of crushed frozen water's likelihood of occurence in the abode of the Devil and souls condemned to eternal punishment, but I would really love to see him drawing THE RAY again.

Looks one issue in September, two in October and the last one in late November. I wonder how far Joe Q is... maybe the spacing is to ensure he finished on time (the classic d***ed if you do, d***ed if you don't).

when I met him at SDCC I asked him if he was done with OMD and he said 'almost'
the dates we have so far
are part 2-sept.26th
part 3-oct 31st
and no part 4 date has been announced yet

It's really sad that an unmasking was wasted in such a pointless fashion as this and Civil War. What a great story it could of been in more capable hands. Now there going to undo it and yes they are going to undo it!
I guess the answer does point to itself, JMS, and that being said I could tell you doing the old 'aunt may is in the hospital routine is sad. Kill her off already. Peter needs to grow and become a man. It's Spider-man, not Spider-boy!
