TINY TITANS

Last month, we brought you the first word about Tiny Titans, a new Johnny DC title at DC by Art Baltazar and Franco Aureliani (Patrick the Wolf Boy). The larger conceit of the series – “Tiny Titans” is the cartoon that’s shown in the DC Universe, featuring very young versions of the Teen Titans.

The main conceit though – to make good comics for kids. As series editor Jann Jones told us in August, “When I moved into the role of Coordinating Editor and started doing the sign off on the kids’ books of the Johnny DC line, I saw that they were really good, solid books, but I didn’t feel like I could give them to a four year old or a five year old, or just any kid in general. Despite their connection to the animated projects, they were still dealing with the more serious issues – cases where if the heroes don’t save the day, it’s implied, or shown that people will die. I think that’s kind of heavy to put on a younger audience.

“I’ve been on the convention circuit since 1999 with DC, and I’ve met a bunch of really great people over the years that do material that is what I was looking for. So when the pieces started coming together, the first person who came to my mind was Art Baltazar, who does Patrick the Wolf Boy. His stuff is so sweet and cute, while also being fresh and funny. It’s something that you could give to a kid, and any child will pick that up and be totally amused by it, but I can read it and laugh too. That’s the kind of humor and that’s the kind of storytelling that I’m really going for here.”

The series won’t debut until January, but for now, DC has provided Newsarama with more looks inside from Art and Franco. Click on the thumbnails for larger versions.

This is going to be even COOLER than I had first thought!

While it seems that Continuity-be-damned for this project, I still can't help wondering how do you accomodate 2 Wonder Girls in a single book???

This looks perfect for my daughter. My 5 year old loves superheroes, and would like to go through my comics, but I don't have anything age appropriate. This fills that niche perfectly. I finally have a comic I can buy for her regularly.

That's awesome!

I'm looking right at you, DC parents. If you don't buy this for your little kids, I don't think you can call yourself a fan!

Don't have anything age appropriate?

I have found Legion of Super-Heroes in the 31st Century is a book my 4 year old likes. Also Justice League Unlimited, Teen Titans Go, Batman Strikes, those DC/Cartoon Network books. There is a plethora of good stuff out there for kids, you just have to look.

OK. I should clarify: something age appropriate she'd like. She likes the JLU cartoon, but she has shown no interest in the comic, and she usually goes with me to the LCS. Ditto for Batman Strikes. I'd forgotten that there is a comic based on the cartoon version of LSH. She likes the cartoon, but she can take it or leave it. Tiny Titans? It has that cutesy, perky, happy look that she would go gaga over. I can see her looking at Tiny Raven and wanting to have a doll of her to hug, and take to bed with her.

They seem to be making a real effort to attract the real kids' audience (as opposed to the current approach of the animated/adventure series which are more "all-ages" books), something that the comic industry seemed to have pretty much abandoned. It'll be interesting to see how these do.

If you look on the chalkboard in the classroom pic of Robin, Speedy & Kid Flash, the teacher's name is "Mr. Trigon". That's awesome. I can't wait to pick up this book....for, um my kids...yup that's it.

Horse hockey.

My then four-to-five-year-old loved "Teen Titans Go!", and, to a lesser extent, "JLU." Those are/were worthwhile books that gave more stories to folks who missed having new episodes of the animated shows.

When, in any industry, worthwhile work is discarded because there's a new boss, it's a crime.

Way cuter than it should be!

Part of me has been dreading this day all my life -- to see the Teen Titans, or any of DC's heroes, get the Muppet Babies treatment, for crying out loud... But after seeing these samples of Baltazar's art, I gotta say, this is freakin' adorable. So many cute little bits: Speedy's kiddie trick arrows, Aqualad's pet fish, Kid Flash scarfing down cereal as a stern parent-figure Barry (in costume but only waist-down) watches; "Mr. Trigon"!!, the three Robins (are they Dick, Jason and Tim?); the way Beast Boy changes only into "cute" animals; the way Kid Devil is a kind of callback to Harvey Comics' beloved Hot Stuff; etc. etc. Hate to say it but this might be worth checking out even by an adult, just for sheer fun. Hey, I'm even wishing they did a real "Tiny Titans" cartoon now!

Dunno, but it's still on the server.

So does that mean Tim is in the class with Speedy and Kid Flash? I hope that's just concept art and not set in stone, I want the fab five together.

Nope, that looks like Dick on the cover, Tim drawing, and Jason just showing up in the Batcar.
