[Correction/Update]: D. COOKE TO LEAVE DC's THE SPIRITWITH ISSUE #12

Correction/Update: At his San Diego “Spotlight” panel, creator Darwyn Cooke that he and colloborator J. Bone are leaving the DC ongoing series The Spirit with its 12th issue.

We previously and erroneiously reported that the series would end with issue #12. The series will continue with a new creative team...

Newsarama regrets the error.

Cooke also revealed that he has two graphic novels planned over the next two years - one an all ages fairy tale, and the second, more in the vein of his Catwoman work, centering on a man who's life is unraveling as he deals with modern life

Look for more details coming soon in a full panel report…

Newsarama's Comic-Con International '07 coverage is brought to you by Witchblade – The Anime Series. Available on DVD September 25th. Click here to view trailer.

Well this sucks. I enjoyed his issues, but I can see why it just didn't click for people.

Edit: Okay, take two.

This. Truly. Sucks.

The Spirit is one of the best books DC is putting out now. I'm really going to miss Cooke and J. Bone. Couldn't Cooke stay on as the writer?

I'm disapointed as well but I am amazed that Cooke was able to keep a somewhat monthly schedule doing so much of the creative duties on the book. I'll miss this book.

I'm sorry to see him go -- but I'm glad the comic is continuing!

Depending on who replaces Cooke and J. Bone, this is almost as bad as cancellation. Cooke, J. Bone, and Dave Stewart made this book. It's gonna be tough to fill their shoes.

well that still sucks.

But I'd like to see The Spirit continue on.

Aaaaaand...

#12 will be my last issue.

Barring some absolutely incredible announcement for his replacement, of course.

Get Gary Chaloner. He did an excellent job with Eisners John Law Detective.

Whew, down to only a couple of DC titles now. This was clearly the best of the bunch I was reading. Damn shame.

That's too bad. I was hoping he'd have a long run on this.

Well limited Cooke is better than no Cooke at all.

I know he is under contact, but I think that Peter David would be a good fit for the Spirit.

I had the impression from #1 that Darwyn had difficulties coming up with enough material to fill an issue. (The two-page splash is a perfectly good example of meeting the page quota without moving the story whatsoever.) Well, I guess th Spirit simply didn't translate well into the 21st Century.

Darwyn must also team up with a better inker. I noticed in the Spirit many lines were left out and had to be fill in by the colorist. His style is rather crude and could really use a more detailed inker to "fill in the blank" so to speak.

They're not wrong; they were just premature.

It'll be official around #18, I'd imagine.
