DYNAMITE ANNOUNCES ROSS & KRUEGER ON SUPERPOWERS
From Dynamite's Press Release
Dynamite Entertainment announced today that Alex Ross and Jim Krueger would be making SUPERPOWERS their next comic book project following their two-year smash run on DC’s Justice! SUPERPOWERS was developed by Dynamite with the pair of fan-favorite creators.
The project, described by Dynamite Publisher Nick Barrucci as “being in development for the last three years,” is scheduled for release at the end of 2007 and marks the return of a host of classic Golden Age heroes and villains, all under the creative and artistic direction of Ross and writer Jim Krueger.
“SUPERPOWERS will be unlike anything that Dynamite has done to date,” continued Barrucci. “Not only in terms of the subject matter, but in terms of every approach we’re taking with the series. After all, it’s not everyday you get to work with Alex Ross. Although, I should throw in a tease that I’m living the dream of two lifetimes as this is just one of the projects we have cooking with Alex in 2007 and 2008!”
I’m excited to work with so many classic comic icons,” said Ross. “Dynamite’s enthusiasm matches ours, and it’s great working with them.
“SUPERPOWERS, for me, is a chance to do things with characters that don't have to live by the end of the series," Krueger said. "To a degree, this project is the best of two worlds -- the characters here are vital parts and icons in the history of heroes and comics. But at the same time, they can bleed, they can die, they don't have to remain the good guys. This project, both in story and in content, is about the freedom to be and create. Oh, and I get to work with Alex again."
SUPERPOWERS will feature covers and character designs by Alex Ross, who is also co-plotting the series with Dynamite and writer Jim Krueger. The image accompanying this release is the first painted piece by Ross, and will be available through the AlexRossArt.com booth #2419 at this month’s Comic-Con International in San Diego. A special preview comic of “SUPERPOWERS” will also be available at the booth.
More details on the series, including the launch and further creative details are forthcoming. The project is being teased by Dynamite with the following:
From the dawn of the 20th Century came a new chapter in mankind's history, unleashed during a time of great war and destruction.
It was the beginning of the Age of the SUPERPOWERS, yet with the closing of the Second World War, this new spark seemingly flickered and died.
Until now...
Now the story can be told of the great lost Superpowers -- men and women with incredible abilities who changed the course of mankind forever . . . and who had been thought lost . . .
Until now . . .
DYNAMITE ENTERTAINMENT was founded in 2004 and is home to several best-selling titles and properties. Dynamite's ongoing Highlander comic book series launched to excess of 100,000 copies sold for issue #0. The recently released The Lone Ranger #1 sold out on its first day in comic shops and whose 2nd print sold out within a short time of releasing in comics shops.
Now, in addition to the ongoing Red Sonja and AOD series, DYNAMITE has released the all-new Battlestar Galactica comic by Greg Pak and Nigel Raynor - launching with a specially priced #0 issue, having sold in excess of 175,000 copies and recently featured in the pages of TV Guide, A classic Battlestar Galactica comic book series, Xena by John Layman and Fabiano Neves, a Darkman vs. the Army of Darkness mini-series and is preparing the Lone Ranger with Brett Matthews and John Cassaday - and Dynamite has more on the horizon!
In addition to the creators mentioned - Dynamite works with some of the most high profile creators in comics, including Alex (Justice) Ross, John (Astonishing X-Men) Cassaday, Michael (Superman/Batman, Aspen Comics) Turner, Jim (All-Star Batman) Lee, Michael (Red Sonja) Avon Oeming, Mike (Red Sonja/X-Men) Carey, Jim (Justice) Kruegar, Greg (The Incredible Hulk) Pak, Brett (Serenity, The Lone Ranger) Matthews - as well as working with up and coming new talent and enhancing strong creators!
The company also produces new and classic material from such creators as Paul Gulacy and Doug Moench's Six from Sirius, Tim Truman's Scout, Carlos Trillo and Eduardo Risso's Borderline and other titles including Jim Starlin's Dreadstar, in addition to reprint editions of classic Red Sonja material and more.

The skull and cross bones guy looks INCREDIBLY familiar, but I can't remember his name.
I've been waiting for a publisher to pick up all these public domain characters and do something with them. And with Dynamite's track record of making good comics with old liscenses, it only makes sense that they would be the ones to do it. Even if this wasn't Kreuger and Ross, I would be REALLY interested.
Now I just wish they would publish something original.

That would be The Black Terror. You probably remember him from Alan Moore's America's Best Comics series - Tom Strong or the spin off series they did a little later - Terra Obscura (a Tom Strong spin-off based on old Nedor Comics characters, written by Peter Hogan) (from wikipeidia)
I'm guessing by the use of The Black Terror and the Original Daredevil (the guy with the boomerangs) this is going to be some sort series based on characters in Public Domain.
Very Interesting! Count me in!

I dig Ross and Krueger collaborations...
But, isn't that ol' boy with the skull and crossbones on his chest The Terror? Last seen in Alan Moore's ABC books, particularly Tom Strong and Terra Obscura, along with tom Strange...? In fact, they all appeared in the original America's Best Comics from the Golden Age. Does DC/Wildstorm have the rights to these characters now, or are they all public domain, for people to do as they please?
Either way, an Alex Ross painting of The Terror is friggin cool.
Now, when is Jim Krueger's Foot Soldiers going to come back into print? And who's going to publish it?

The Black Terror, the Flame, the Green Lame, Miss Masque (maybe), Daredevil, the Yellow Claw... I should know the rest, too, but I'm blanking on them. Looks amazing.

He's exclusive to DC, and so far that we know, doesn't have a clause in his contract like Roberston that allows him to work for other companies.

KICK ASS!!!!!
I've always been intrigued by these characters ever since I was a little kid and read Steranko's history of comics.
To have these two gentlemen taking these characters up and restoring them to "life" is unbelievably cool!!!
Cannot wait for this!
DE is kicking all sorts of fanny right now, first with Gage on the Man with No Name, then with Wagner on Zorro, and now this. The "big 2" had better watch out ...

Ross' Original Daredevil looks great. The creepy dude in the top-left, behind the "Superpowers" logo is definitely the Claw.

I think you mean the Green F-Lame, although I hope what you wrote doesn't turn out to be an accurate prediction.
I'm curious if some of these characters, like Daredevil and the Yellow Claw will have to be renamed.
On the other hand, maybe that's not the original Daredevil and 3-D Man is just p.o.'ed for getting booted out of Agents of Atlas.

Waitaminit here.
Aren't these all AC Comics characters? Miss Masque has appeared in a comic within the last two years. Highly unlikely these are public domain.
I wonder if there's some sort of agreement here.

This is awesome..
Golden Age goodness!!
you always forget how many characters are public domain..
Is there a site that lists them?
Are these characters now owned by Ross or do they stay Public Domain?

This does look cool - I'd buy it based on the awesomeness of the original Daredevil's costume alone - so simple. (But... boomerangs? Really?)

If you're talking about the green guy under the Superpowers logo on the left, it's "Green Lama" as Matt says above.
As for Daredevil, I know that AC Comics calls him "Red Devil" when they reprint his stories. This may be another case like Captain Marvel, where they can use the name on the inside but not on the cover.
