BLACK CANARY SINGS SOLO IN JULY

The Black Canary’s steady and continued rise to prominence in the DCU Universe continues in July as she headlines a new four-issue limited series, written by new DC exclusive writer Tony Bedard and artist Paulo Sequeira. The series serves as a sort of companion to the Green Arrow: Year One limited series also premiering in July.

Let’s let Tony Bedard explain...

“2007 is a banner year for Green Arrow and Black Canary, and while the Emerald Archer's origins are explored in Green Arrow: Year One, a present-day turning point in the life of Dinah Lance drives the new Black Canary mini-series,” the writer told Newsarama..

“Dinah is torn between Ollie's proposal and her new status as a foster-mother. While training with Lady Shiva's sensei in Southeast Asia, Black Canary rescued a young girl named Sin who was being cruelly groomed to take Lady Shiva's place as a master assassin. Dinah resigned from the Birds of Prey to give Sin a shot at a normal childhood. But can she do so if she pursues her volatile relationship with Oliver Queen? And when the League of Assassins hires a deadly Green Arrow villain to retrieve the child, Black Canary faces the most unbearable loss of her life.”

According to Bedard, Black Canary is assuming a greater stature in the DCU than ever before, and this is the story that cuts to the core of who she is and sets the new direction of her life.

“When [editor] Mike Carlin and I first discussed this, it began with a general desire to give Black Canary a spotlight similar to the Year One story planned for Green Arrow,” Bedard explained. “But the more we talked it over, the more it became clear that Dinah had more immediate issues to confront and explore. We could tell a story of her early days, but there was a stronger, more compelling tale to be told in the here and now. The result is a four-issue miniseries beautifully illustrated by a true rising star named Paulo Sequeira. It's my favorite thing I've worked on in a couple of years and I'm immensely proud of the results.”

The first two issues of the four-issue series ship in July. Look for more information on the series in the coming weeks here at Newsarama.

Well, merlyn is about the only GA villain I can think that qualifies; does GA even HAVE a rogue's gallery?

I would guess that Constantine Drakkon is the likely GA villian in question.

Green arrow has a few interesting rogues

Onomatopoeia would be a more interesting choice than Merlyn and more likely to be
hired by the League.

While I'm looking forward to the BLACK CANARY mini-series, I really wish it was an ongoing series instead of the upcoming GREEN ARROW/BLACK CANARY pairing.

Isn't Count Vertigo one of Ollie's rogues?

The link to the penciled page doesn't work.

As for this, I'm very interested to read this. I'm getting the last of the Green Arrow title because of this. Nothing against the book, so don't think that way.

I hold Black Canary up there at #2, with Wonder Woman on #1. Don't know about anyone #3 going down.

Onomatopoeia only goes after non-metas, BC is a Meta

Count Vertigo was Ollie's nemesis for a while but then it was almost like he was retconned out.. he has only shown up once since the smith reboot and he didnt even try to kill ollie (saved his life infact)

there are 3 people i can think off that might be the villian, Drakon, Merlyn or DA DA DAM! Shado!
Dinah and Shado do know etcother so that might be fun but shado issent really a assasin..

that cover features one of the most uncomfortable looking poses I've ever seen.

I wonder if Shado is considered a Green Arrow villain... she's recently resurfaced in Connor Hawke's mini and it could be really intense if it is Shado vs Black Canary as Canary tries to figure out Ollie's proposal.

Count Vertigo is currently a Checkmate agent, so it's probably not him.

Damn you, DC! Must you take all of my money?

I think the Green Arrow villain will be -- Pinball Wizard! (Come on, I can't be the only person who remembers that guy.)

I love how Black Canary is getting more attention but I'm not sure how hot I am on the idea of her marrying Ollie. I was more for Nightwing/Oracle getting hitched. So what do most people here think - are Canary/Arrow going to tie the knot? Inquiring minds would like to know...

Drakkon is the most likely candidate, given that he is, in fact, an assassin for hire.

Not really familiar with Bedard's work, but I really like Sequira's work on BoP and think Canary is a chracter with a lot of untapped potential, so I'll give it a shot.

Two things though: (A) Can we please get her a new costume that was designed for this century and (B) somebody get her some Ex-Lax, 'cause judging by her stance on the cover, she's fighting one major case of constipation.

A lot of people complain about Michael Turner's or Rob Liefeld's anatomically-questionable drawings but that colored pic of BC also looks odd, and not just the pose itself...

Yeah "the MAN"! Society as a whole is Green Arrow's rogue gallery!

Or at least it used to be before he sold out!!!!!

Sorry, I grew up on Denny 'O Neil's "Anti-establishment Green Arrow and recently re-read the series and still having A hard time of GA being part of the problem now.

Yes, thank you. The occasional Year One story is golden, but I'd much rather have something set in the present that moves the character forward. Definitely checking this out.

That's one opinion. A more accurate one is that her current costume is a badly slapped together mishmash of her original BoP costume (aka the "scuba" suit, which was fine as it was) and her original costume, which fails to do justice to either.

There's the Red Dart...

That pose Canary's in HAS to hurt. Is there a "Night Chiropractor"?
