SEVEN SOLDIERS: MISTER MIRACLE #1

DC Comics has released a five page, unlettered preview of Seven Soldiers: Mister Miracle #1 by Grant Morrison, with art by Pasqual Ferry.

The solicitation for the issue reads:

Grant Morrison's amazing SEVEN SOLDIERS saga continues with a 4-part miniseries featuring art by Pasqual Ferry (ADAM STRANGE)! A young Shiloh Norman is all grown up, and now, with the help of his Mother Box —an alien computer —he has become the world's coolest escape artist, a cross between David Blaine and Puff Daddy. After a hallucinatory encounter with the being called Metron, the formerly aimless and dissatisfied Mister Miracle finds himself with a new mission in life. He now believes he has evidence of an apocalyptic cosmic war being fought through human agents on Earth! Shiloh's seen the light. He knows the score —and he may have lost his mind!

Seven Soldiers: Mister Miracle #1 is due in stores September 21st.

I haven't followed Seven Soldiers because of financial considerations, but I don't think I'll be able to pass up this one. I loved Ferry's art on Superboy and Action Comics, and Adam Strange was unbelievable. This looks just as good.

This looks good, I'm buying this too

I love the Mister Miracle & Big Barda characters, and I also hope the Justice League Unlimited TV episode The Ties That Bind find its way to quick DVD release along with Clash and others from the latest season

as well as a Mister Miracle DC Archive volume 1

I hope this isn't going to be a "comic book within a comic book" type of story, judging by the last 2 pages. Although, come to think of it, the last time that was done well was in Animal Man by…Grant Morrison.

Wow. Based on preview art and premise, this might just be the best of the 7 Soldiers minis. And that's some tough competition.

Should probably point out that the Mister Miracle in this one is not Scott Free (of MM & Barda), but rather his Earth-born replacement. Shiloh didn't last long as the World's Greatest Escape Artist, but he's shown up in various comics through the years. Looks like he's back in a starring role now.

And now for a dissenting opinion...

I won't be getting this book because the rest of the Seven Soldiers books have left me cold. Morrison's work is overhyped by no fault of his own, so it must be hard to live up to his own reputation. But, when push comes to shove, these books are no more or less special than anything else on the shelves right now. And, at the cost of comics these days, I'm being a lot more frugal with my fundage.

It looks nice.. I'm just confused over who the hell thought David Blaine and Puff Daddy were even remotely cool.

David Blaine and Puff Daddy are post-cool—nobody likes them, which makes them about as cool as cool gets.

The art looks beautiful. I just have one question. Isn't Shiloh African American? If so, how come he has blue eyes? Just askin'.

Seven Soldiers:
Shining Knight - My favorite, thus far. Love the art and the "fish out of water" aspect to the story. Would love to see more of the Shining Knight.
Zatanna - Ugh. Nothing like the Zatanna I love and respect. Could barely get through the first issue.
Klarion - Seemingly dry, but with interesting subtext. I often finish it and wonder why I bought it. Upon reflection, I like the story being told, even if I'm not particularly fond of the execution of that story. I also wonder if Morrison's not trying to match the mood of the story with the setting (pilgrim's are often portrayed as quite a stoic lot). Love the link to Solomon Grundy, even if only hinted at in this book.
Guardian - Never been interested in this character. Didn't even pick it up.

Really? Damn, I wanted to see Morrison's version of Scott, he was always a really fun guy (not to mention Barda). The art's spiffy, but a little bright on the inking part.

edit: I'm stupid, I could've figured out it was Siloh by reading the tiny paragraph in the first post. Oh well.

Mostly matches my opinions. But this Guardian is an entirely new character (not the one from Superman), and the series is actually quite a good ride.

Am I the only here who worries that Metron's leg muscles have atrophied to an embarrasing state?

Seriously, he must have bed sores on his ass by now!

Surely.

Otherwise, this preview looks great!!!

Can't wait for this. I'm not into all of the Seven Soldiers series, though I love the Zatanna one. Looking forward to this one for Ferry's art, Morrison's writing, and Shilo Norman is a character I've wanted to see again for a while now.

Dude- take out a loan or hold-up a liquor store or something. 7S is great so far and MM looks to continue the trend.

If you're not reading Seven Soldiers, you're probably reading something worse. That's all there is too it.

Pascual Ferry, with his Adam Strange series, jumped from shlock artist to amazing artist in a single blink. It's possible his art was always as good but never got the right inking/coloring treatment given in Adam Strange. Who knows. But now that he's sealed the formula for eye candy magic, I hope he never goes back.

It's part of his costume, which was provided by Highfather of the New Gods back in Mr. Miracle (series two) #19.

Nah, I'm just making s--t up. It's probably a mistake. They must not have too many black people working in the Wildstorm FX offices (er, or whoever colored that).

Perhaps Pascual is THE most underrated artist in the industry??

I've known his art for over a decade and he's always been this good. IMHO, it was the (not so simple) combination of timing and the right project with a profile high enough to make him noticed. Simply put, it was his moment to ascend.

Well, I've seen more than a few African-American with blue eyes... I'll have to go to my dusty archives and take a look to make sure.
