ASTONISHING X-MEN #11
Here’s a little trade secret, comic book solicitation writers really like to use the world “penultimate”. It’s probably why there are story arcs to begin with, so there can be a second-to-last issue. Latest Marvel book to come to its "one-more-to-it-over" issue is perennial Top 5 series Astonishing X-Men, which when it wraps up its first-year-long arc with issue #12, will take a sabbatical and return for another year-long arc, with the creative team of Joss Whedon and John Cassaday in-tact.
But that’s in the future, now enjoy a preview of Astonishing X-Men #11, shipping next month. Here’s how Marvel describes the issue:
"DANGEROUS"
The penultimate chapter [editor’s note: see?] to Whedon & Cassaday's first year of ASTONISHING. The fate of the Astonishing X-Men! Professor X vs. the Danger Room! In this issue...everything comes crumbling down.
Part 5 (of 6).
32 PGS./Marvel PSR...$2.99

Now that is a preview.
Great art and some great lines and writing. Can't wait to have the issue in my hands.

Only 2 very small complaints...
1- How is Xavier driving a semi? He can't use his legs and he is most definately holding onto the wheel with both hands in at least the 1 panel so he couldn't be using a stick on the gas pedal.
2- This story arc is kind of a little bit of a re-hash of an older story from about 5 or 6 years ago where Cerebro (the predecessor of the present Cerebra system used by the X-Men for those of you that have not read every X-book since the beginning) became sentient and tried to kill everyone and Xavier had to be the one to take it out.
Both of these are solved by a little suspension of disbelief and the fact that this present story arc is vastly superior to the previous semi-similar story

Well, I'm not as familiar with X-Men as some people, but I remember Xavier being able to walk in outer space, which implies that the lesser gravity allowed him to walk. So he's got SOME use of his legs. He doesn't need to be strong enough to stand on his legs to push an accelerator down.
(Maybe?)

You may be right on that, however I don't think the writers ever actually explained it very well. I could definately understand what you are saying if he was in just a standard-run-of-the-mill space suit, however every single time we have seen him in space, it has been in one of those super-high-tech-exo-skeleton-X-Men space-suits. Those could very easily be doing the walking for him, especially if he could use his psi-powers to control the equipment. Basically, a telepathic remote control.

This looks awesome. This is the best book with an "X" in the title since Jim Lee was working on X-Men. This is, without a doubt, the best book Marvel publishes.

Moral of the story.
Don't F-ck with Xavier.
I loved the sly little reference to magneto, but done so without getting caught up in the muddled muck that is the Magneto mess, a perfect microcosm of why this title is so good and handles continuity so well.

Similar but not a re-hash, I'd say. IIRC, the first story was a sentient version of Cerebro with its own humanoid body (that's the main similarity) using its vast information on mutants worldwide to create its own version of the X-Men: a psi, a winged nun, a metallic mercenary, a psycho with ice-fire powers, etc. Then, it tried to destroy humanity to protect the mutants or something like that.

You remember that from when? Around what issues? Because Xavier recovered the use of his legs at one point (with the help of Lilandra and genetic therapy, I think ) and then he stayed in outer space with her for a long time.
When he came back to Earth, Shadow King crushed his legs leaving him once more a cripple.
Later, (pretty much like HeX111 said) he used a special exo-skeleton powered by psi-energy that allowed him to walk and go to attack Magneto (Fatal Attractions, I believe).
That's just what I can remember off the top my head. There might be more...

Didn't buy the last issue but looks like I'll have to, if only for a complete run. Can't wait to see what happens next.

These pages are unintentionally hilarious, but also not very good. Capable, perhaps, but the story is getting worse with every issue.
I'm pretty much done with this title. Not even Joss freakin' Whedon, god among auteurs, can make the X-Men interesting.

As seen in the predecessor to this series, we see Xavier manipulating a teapot and pouring tea, that leads to the assumption that he has some telekenetic ability like Jean Grey. I think it has to do with a familiarity with the mind powers.
By the way, the cover looks great and I cant wait for this series to ship all the way. Are we getting #12 in September then? That's kinda rediculous. But always worth the wait.

Um ... that was the coolest thing I've seen all week. These pages read extremely fast, but for a visual medium like comics, action doesn't get much better than that. Amazing.
I love this and Planetary, but refuse to give up Cassady in either. Best get used to a horrible shipping schedule . . .

Hardly anything from Marvel is original especially when dealing with long established titles like X-Men. The book looks nice, and reads well, but it's just another X-Men spinoff title among the hundreds of others, just another flavor of the mutants led by a bald crippled guy. But despite everyone's criticisms of what I'm calling M&M (mainstream marvel), the books continue to sell, the movies continue to get made. Meh.
